may be that you have to use the nvidia drivers anyway, or plain vesa till
a good driver is available. but i was wondering what version of linux as
well, there are quite a few, each with different version numbers and linking
libraries of several versions as well, any of the differences could cause
odd reactions. the v-bios checksum may be different cause the cmos copy
of the bios is corrupted, or the bios extension on the card might be frigged,
if it has one. also check that interrupt 10 is not reserved for an isa card
or something which is causing problems

[Newbie]Problem with mouse pointer

2002-11-02 Thread Stan J.
I installed Xserver and then Enlightenment on my Debian 3.0(woody).
When I issue the startx command,I get a DOX screen.
Instead of an arrow pointer, what I get is a white square(one inch by one
inch) that
moves with the mouse.
How do I correct this mouse pointer problem?
   Thanks

[Newbie]how to enable VESA mode 115 (800x600x24/32)

2002-11-02 Thread Philip Brown
Hi folks,

I'm using xfree 4.2.0, with the vesa driver set.

When I dont specify a default depth, the Xserver does a probe of all vesa
modes available. It prints out, amoung other things,
mode 115 (800x600, 32bits per pixel)

How can I tell the server to use this mode?

I have tried having the basic entries in the Screen section

DefaultDepth 24 #have also tried 32

SubSection Display
Depth 24
Modes 800x600
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 32
Modes 800x600
EndSubSection

but it doesnt work that way.
(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes

It only works if I use Depth 8 or 16

Whats going on here?
I need 24bit or 32bit to have my apps run.

[nvidia geforce4 440Go]
[I dont care about acceleration - I'd like to just use the existing
4.2.0 binaries I have available to me, if possible]

[Newbie]i815e dual head tinyx advice

2002-11-02 Thread Marty Ross
Hello,

I need to produce a very small dual-headed XFree86 server for an application that requires only primitive graphics support (lines, fills, bitmaps) in 800x600x256 mode.

The chipsets are:
1. Intel 1132 (i815e) Graphics controller
2. Chips and Technologies F69000 HiQVideo

From what I understand, I'm in the right place (XFree86.org). However, I don't know where exactly to start and I'm looking for some guidance.

I believe I'll want to start with the project that used to be called "TinyX" (which I understand is now called "Kdrive" or something).

I'll be building in RedHat Linux 7.2 (kernel 2.4.7).

I'll want to locate the thinnest possible APIs to help me with the following:
1. Graphics output (as I mentioned above)
2. Touchscreen input (e.g. MicroTouch module)
3. Mouse input

I won't need a window manager or anything high level since both screens are to be fully controlled by the app!

Any advice or pointers to get me started will be highly appreciated!

Thank you

OK, I tried. There must be something more to this... I suspect that xkb has
to be configured for whatever keyboards are needed (like US English and
French). I haven't found any information on how to go about this without
getting into heavy programming.
I looked at man setxkbmap and don't understand too much... :((

I need to switch languages (English, French, Italian) very often within
the
same document where I am using text and graphics - in OpenOffice,
specifically.
s there some way to switch keyboard layouts on FreeBSD quickly and
painlessly as can be done on Windows?
On Windows, hiting Left Shift + Alt switches between keyboards.
An alternate way of entering accented or strange characters (on Windows)
is to hold down Alt and enter the ASCII codes from the number pad, e.g.
Alt
 - 0233 produces é.
I was told that xkb (or is it XKB) could do this; that I could switch
keyboards with hotkeys. Would this work in OpenOffice? In kde3?
Where can I find info on how to implement and use?
 Thanks in advance,
 PJ

Thinking ti save memory i also upgraded to xf86 v4.2, however i still

[Newbie]Workaround! was: Can't view movies with 4.2 and ATI Rage 128

2002-11-02 Thread Christoph Bugel
I'm running a rather fresh 4.2 (which came with redhat 7.3)
and I have a problem: Whenever I try to watch a movie (wether
it's avi or mpeg doesn't matter and I also used several movie
players) my computer freezes. First I get some blue distorsion
in the picture of the playing movie (sound is fine and
sometimes stays running after the freeze), then my whole
XServer and the keyboard freeze. This realy sucks, because I
could watch movies with 4.1 and everthing was fine. Now I have
the feeling something was changed with the new ati driver
and I don't have the know-how to fix this. I allready wrote a
full bugreport but until know got no answer so I thought I'd
ask around if this were a more common problem and somebody
 knew a fix...

I had similar freezes when playing avi files. For me the
problem went away when I enabled Xinerama in XF86Config! (If I
disable Xinerama, I can freeze my system reliably :-)

Try something like this in the XF86Config:

Section ServerFlags
Option Xinerama true
EndSection

HTH,
Christoph

[Newbie]shift scroll lock...

2002-11-02 Thread rynhughes
I am running redhat 7.3 using the gnome desktop
environment. I have a 122 keybord that I would like to
use with the system. Everything is working great except
for the numlock. On this keyboard, numlock is toggled by
pressing shift and scroll-lock. From the console (X not
running) this works correctly. However, when I press the
key combination withen X the computer beeps at me and
nothing happens. I'm guessing that X is intercepting the
shift+scroll lock sequence and trying to do something
with it. Is there a way to either disable this or have
numlock turn on by default when X starts?

Thanks in advance
