[Newbie]xf86config

2002-10-19 Thread Chuck Gelm
Howdy, Y'all:

During a run of this configuration script I am prompted:
"Enter a number to choose a keyboard."

I see items numbered from 5 to 25. How do I see items 0-4?
Is there a default?

[Newbie]/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors

2002-10-19 Thread Chuck Gelm
Howdy, Y'all:

While running 'xf86config' I am asked about my monitor
and it is suggested that I check the file
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors
for information.

 I believe that I have installed 4.2.1 over 4.2.0,
yet I do not have this file.

What is wrong?

Hi, Oisin:

Thanks. Yes, I do not have a Window Manager.
I am running Slackware v8.0 but I did not install
any x* during initial setup.

I'll check for packages that match wm*.tgz,
then kde*.tgz and gno*.tgz.

Re: [Newbie]force linear memory with vesa 1.2

2002-11-16 Thread Chuck Gelm
Hi, Mario:

I have a TSeng ET4000 card also. I used one as a temporary
replacement when a video card failed in a workstation. As
found in service (FiveStar 80386sx16 workstations) they had
only 256 kilobytes of memory. Since we had already replaced
several of those old workstations with newer systems, I
removed 256 from each of 3 other cards creating a single
ET4000 with 1 megabyte of RAM.

http://gelm.net/images/et4000.jpg

Does your ET4000 have 8 RAM sockets with only 2 populated?
If yes, you may not have enough memory for more than
640x400 by 16 colors.

Re: [Newbie]what linux distro for LPI?

2002-12-02 Thread Chuck Gelm
Hi, Marcus:

Red Hat v7.3 is a good choice for a distribution,
however it will do much of the installation for you.

IMHO, if you really want to learn linux,
try Slackware. The 'current' version is 8.1.
Get the iso image titled "slackware-8.1-install.iso"
and burn it to a CD/R. It creates a bootable CD-ROM
provided your motherboard supports booting from a CD.
Else, you can create two floppy disks with the
included utilities to use to boot with.

[Newbie]Resolved: Screen size == Window size

2002-12-08 Thread Chuck Gelm
Hi, Felix:

 Thanks, Felix.

I searched for XF86Config-4 but it doesn't exist on my system.
( locate XF86Config & find / -iname xf86config*
  grep -i virtual /etc/X11/XF86Config )
I am using Slackware v8.0 install, kernel 2.2.19,
Dell Latitude XPi CD M166ST laptop with 1 Gigabyte HD,
16 Megabytes RAM.

xterm -version returns
XFree86 4.0.3(156)

However, I found a fix similar to what you suggested.
I removed the '8 bit' and '24 bit' Modes lines and
deleted the '640x480' and '1024x768' from the 16 bit line
leaving only:

Modes "800x600"

Since I cannot do a CTRL-ALT-+ as my laptop does not have
a keypad '+' key, I cannot change resolutions 'on the fly'.
  :-|

 It looks good now! :-)

I did find a 'XF86Config' and it did contain a Modes line containing
 "1024 x 768" which I removed and then
startx
still I had 'window' larger than my screen. My system
specifications indicate my display is 800x600 and my video
driver is listed (#321) NeoMagic laptop.

Re: [Newbie]half screen x display

2002-12-30 Thread Chuck Gelm
Hi, luogh:

IIRC, Xwindow is very video card and video monitor dependent
and not distribution and not cpu dependent.

Tell us what video card you have, what video monitor you have,
and the parts of XF86Config from
Section "Display"
 ..to..
EndSection

Re: [Newbie]half screen x display

2003-01-02 Thread Chuck Gelm
Hi, luogh:

Describe what your screen looks like in the other 2 resolutions
("800x600" "1024x768").

IIRC, CTRL-ALT-"+" toggles among the define 'Modes' in the
default 'depth' (8 bit).

Did XF86Config define your video card and monitor?
What number did you select for your video card
and what parameters did you select for your monitor?
