[newbie] DCOPserver

2001-05-29 Per discussione Danny Gordon

I went to log in as root taday and got this error.

There was some error setting up inter-process communications
for KDE.
The message returned by the system was:

Could not read network connection list
/root/.DCOPserver-x1-6-00-80-c8-dd-2f-f8_:0

Please check that the DCOPserver program is running.

I am running Mandrake 7.2 with KDE 2.1.1 and can login as a user
no problem.

When i try to login as root i get that error and the system
hangs forcing a reset.

2001-05-10 Per discussione Danny Gordon

As silly as this may sound here is how i fixed my sound problem.
I upgraded KDE from 2.0 to 2.1.1 *big grin*
It fixed the problem of not having sound as a user but having it
as root. It did break my abbrowser the k address book but i have
my sound back.
Running mdk 7.2 btw

Re: [newbie] No sound

sndconfig fails with this error
The following error occured running the modprobe program
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: inet_module : device or resours
busy /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed

Now this part is strange to me, i rebooted and have sound when im root,
with kmix showing (Invalid mixerCreative SBLive) but have another tab
on it named TriTech (3) which seems to work. When i log on as a normal
user i have no sound and kmix shows only one tab (Invalid mixer
Creative SBLive)

I knew it would not be easy learning this stuff but im tuff :-)

As root run sndconfig in a console (outside X-window).
That should get you going again.

[newbie] firestarter

2001-05-04 Per discussione Danny Gordon

Hello all and thanks for this great list :-)

I was wondering as a relitive newbie how i would set up an efective firewall,
since i did not know anything about ipchains i was lost. But i found a
program called firestarter and it seems simple enough to use.

Does anyone have any experiance with this program and can anyone offer any
advice?

Thanks in advance.
