[newbie] 9.1 Hard Drake

2003-10-23 Per discussione Duron . Davis
I installed 9.1 and when I navigate through the menu to harddrake, I click
on the harddrake icon and instead of getting harddrake, I get some kind of
calendar program. I went through the add\remove packages process and
removed harddrake, and then put it back in with the same results. Maybe if
I took the calendar program out...? But I don't know the package name and
nothing I saw rang a bell.
Any ideas?

I am wondering if 9.2RC2 is the same as 9.2

If you're using RC2, you can just add cooker sources for RPMS and
RPM2 from a cooker mirror and update to
tom $ cat /etc/mandrake-release
Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (Torrent) for i586

A lot less frustrating than bittorrent, and less mb's to d/l too.
Current cooker on the mirrors is 9.2, plus a few updates. 9.1 users
can also use cooker to update to 9.2, just 'urpmi urpmi' first,
then get the rest. Don't be put off by the total number of mb's
urpmi displays. That's installed space, not actual d/l. As a rule
of thumb, the amount you'll be d/l'g is about 40% of the installed
space. Since you're upgrading (ie, replacing packages) there'll be
little to no additional disk space needed. The challenge will be
finding a good mirror. (hint: European mirrors are better)
  http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/cookerdevel.php3

I'm really disappointed 9.2 is available to Club members thru
torrent and not iso's by ftp. Torrent sux! As does any p2p scheme
for big files when getters far outnumber givers. And given the
nature of asyncronous BB connections, givers upload speeds will be
much slower than the getters d/l speeds. Many users will see d/l
speeds slower than dialup, while their own upload speed will be
max'd out. And, after sufferin thru a long slow d/l of the iso's
by torrent, you just might find the md5sums won't check. Another
p2p problem with getting large files from many sources (givers).

If you don't want to update to 9.2 from cooker mirrors, then
about the only viable way to get the iso's is to wait till the end
of this month when the iso's should be available by ftp, after the
boxed sets are shipping. I agree and support Mandrake doin this,
I'm just very disappointed it's currently by bittorrent.

Anyone have this running?

I d/l'ed the file (504 megs), set it to be executable, then ran it as root
(I
also tried my normal user account). It gives this error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] darklord]# sh armyops190-linux.bin
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing America's Army: Operations for GNU/Linux
1.9.0...Extraction
failed.
Signal caught, cleaning up

I also tried running it with ./armyops190-linux.bin Same result.

I copied it to the other 2 comps and tried it there. It would not work on my

12 yr olds, but it did try on my 10 yr olds (wouldn't install though - it
takes 1307 megs of space and he's got a smallish HD split between Linux and
Windows).

The question is, why wouldn't it install on:

Mandrake v9.1 download edition
Mandrake v9.0 full boxed set

but would install on:

Mandrake v9.0 download edition:

???

Thanks.

I found some things that might be of use.
I don't know what kind of equipment you have but here are some interesting
sites as well as an email regarding a similar issue.
I think that you can plug a USB expansion adapter into your USB port and
then run multiple adapters from that, but I've never had a need to try it as
I build my own PC's and use boards that are upgradeable.
Most stuff on the market is very limited and proprietary.

I currently have an ipaq and am trying to put linux onto it. I need
to convert the usb cradle to serial cable and was looking at the
how-to page on the subject. Am I correctly interpreting the table
 (http://cvs.handhelds.org/minihowto/h3600-serial-cable.html) in that
I simply connect the pins listed in each row of the table together?
Also, I opened up the ipaq cradle and looked at the chip inside.
The wiring looks like it would need to be very precise. Not having
played around with hardware too much, I was wondering if anybody
could give me some suggestions as to the best way for me to go about
 wiring the pins.

It took me a few days to figure out how to do it, but I finally
managed to build such a cable. You can rip the USB cradle apart, and
re-use the little circuit board found inside (with the attached
connector) to build a serial cable that works.

Here are some pictures of my cable:

  http://www.jimpick.com/pub/photos/2000/ipaq/homebrew-ipaq-cable.jpg

http://www.jimpick.com/pub/photos/2000/ipaq/homebrew-ipaq-cable-closeup.jpg

The connnector on the internal side of the little circuit board is a
14-pin Hirose DF13 Series, which you can get from www.digikey.com.
All you need is the nylon connector (DF13-14S-1.25C, 33 cents each)
and some crimp contacts (DF13-2630SCF, $3.45/100). Don't bother
getting the crimp tool ($989.81) -- you can use a regular crimp tool
instead.

Theoretically, you can just use the same existing connector that the
USB cable is wired into, so you could have a dual USB/serial cable.

Apart from that, you need some wire, and a standard DB9 connector on
the other end.

The pinout on the website is only valid for the external connector.
The internal connnector has the pins in different positions. I had to
figure out the pinout manually (I started the project before the
external pinout was posted on the website). But I have verified that
everything makes sense. Here's the pinout:

  External Internal (Hirose) DB9 Signal (DTE=PC, DCE=iPaq)
    - --- -
 5 27RTS
 6 38CTS
 7 42RXD
 8 53TXD
 3 6 6+1DSR + DCD
 9 74DTR
4,10 95 Ground

Have fun. :-)

Cheers,

 - Jim

p.s. That's kaffe running the same demo I was showing off at OLS.
