You probably have all of your drive partitioned
already. (This is always the default if you don't dothe partitioning
yourself) Get a non destructive reparation tool (Partition Magic) and try
that.

Hey there, I'm having trouble compiling the kernel and I'm wondering if
anybody can give me some input. Ok, here what I've done let me start by
saying I'm running mandrake 6.1, and I'm trying to install linux kernel
 2.2.14.

I've managed to compile the kernel correctly (make mrproper;make
 menuconfig make bzImage;make dep;make modules;make modules_installs), then
I managed to copy bzImage to /boot/vmlinux-2.2.14 and linked vmlinuz
 soft
link ), then I updated lilo by adding a "test" addition to lilo with my
new
 kernel.

I did all that but when I rebooted I get messages like System.map has
incorrect kernel version, and Modules-info.map incorrect kernel version.
So
I think I have to update System.map and Modueles-info.map, but I have no
idea how to do that the HOWTO's don't have anything about that in their,
 any ideas's.

 Hi all,

I've been trying (for about a week) to install Mandrake versions 6.1 and
7.02. on
 the following:

 Tyan 1854 motherboard
 pentium PIII-600
 128 meg ram
 IMB 13.Gb HDD
 MATROX G400max
 SB 1024 soundcard
 NE2000 comp. ethernet card

 he problem is as follows:

After booting up from the CD, I presume the following process is hardware
detection, what happens is when it gets to IDE0 and IDE1 the system hangs
for a while and then reports operation timed out and something along the
lines of IDE0 not found (not responding) and the same for IDE1. Carrying
on with the installation after this the process cab't get past the
formatting of
the Linxu partition. The same also occurs trying to install Redhat 6.0.
I've
tried the fips fdisk route as well with no success.

I've managed to successfully install 7.02 on another machine (only real
 difference being the motherboard)

 Anyone have any ideas

 Cheers

Yep, try adding

append="mem=256M"

under the entry for your Linux kernel image in lilo.conf (usually in /etc)
then run

lilo -v

This worked for me. Except I have 128 MB RAM and mine says 128M instead of
256M. I hear it could get ugly if you remove RAM so keep boot disk with out

I have been attempting to install Linux Mandrake 7.0 (Air - GPL Edition),
with no success at all. I have a Creative Labs 52X CD-ROM drive in my
system, and it doesn't seem to want to read it. I am booting off of the
Linux CD to install. It goes through all of the detection processes fine,
and detects the cd-rom drive as the right one also. It says "Initializing
CD-ROM...", then it will say "Loading second stage ramdisk". It completes
that successfully, but then will move on to "Initializing CD-ROM" once
again, and put "in second stage install" on the bottom of the screen..
Then
it will just sit there forever. Does anyone have any clue about how to
fix
this problem? Sucks when you can't even get Linux to read your cd-rom
 drive, much less install.

Subject: [newbie] kde 2 install problems help needed

I am running Mandrake 7.0 and am new to linux. I thought I followed the
readme
for installation of the kdealpha of 02282000, which is the full install of
kde2
 alpha. I have a qt-copy in /usr/src/kde/qt-copy and kde2 files are in
/opt/kde2 the install was done from / as root, the the files were
installed
from the 02282000 rpm using the --install --force --nodeps options as
indicated
by the readme. The readme indicates nothing else needs to be done. How
ever
when I try to start kword I come up with a error dialouge that stats
dcopserver
needs to be running. I start dcopserver and then try to start kword and
small
amount of hard drive activity then nothing. Would like to get kde2
running,
particularly koffice suite. Can any help me get it working. Thanks in
advance.

 Ralph
