[newbie] Apache

2002-04-20 Per discussione Greg Smith

I have downloaded apache 2.0.35 but can't understand the install
instructions.
I get to the point where I'm supposed to run the ./configure command.
I run the command, but the last two lines of the output show:

configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
configure failed for srclib/apr

Then when I try to run the make command, I get the error message:

make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

Anybody got an idea?
Thanks in advance

Greg

Re: [newbie] NVIDIA RPMs

2002-04-09 Per discussione Greg Smith

Thanks for the info, but alas, I've obviously done something horribly wrong
somewhere.

When I typed glxinfo into a terminal, there is nothing but zeros and it
says extension GLX missing on display :0.0

When I typed /sbin/lsmod into a terminal, the NVdriver was nowhere to be
seen.

Then I typed modprobe NVdriver into the terminal. Nothing happened. I
tried tuxracer and it wouldn't start. I looked at the /etc/modules.conf file
and the alias you suggested is already showing there.\

Any other ideas?

I do appreciate the help.

 If no NVdriver in lsmod, as root type: modprobe NVdriverand try out
 tuxracer. If it works, then fix the alias in /etc/modules.conf to read:
 alias /dev/nvidia*   NVdriver

 we'll just take it from there, if that don't fix you up, come on back.

[newbie] Video Problem (I think)

2002-02-11 Per discussione Greg Smith
Title: Message

I installed Mandrake
8.1 using the recommended settings. Install went al the way through
without a hickup. It asked me to remove the boot media and restart.
I removed the CD and restarted the machine. The boot sequence went all the
way to the gray criss-cross screen with the "X" cursor. Just before the
login screen popped up, the screen went black and started flashing a white line
across the screen near the top. The green light on the monitor started to
flash as if it was loosing signal, then gaining signal, then loosing signal,
over and over. After about 5 minutes a non-GUI Linux screen came up and
had this message:

INIT: Id "x"
respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Then in 5 minutes
the screen started to flash again and the whole process started again. It
didn't look good so I shut downand tried to boot again. Same
thing.

Please, does anybody
have an idea on what could be causing this?

[newbie] Mounting CD Burner

2002-02-07 Per discussione Greg Smith

I have two CDs in my computer. One of them mounts automatically on boot, but
I would like to get my burner to mount as well.
How can I do this so I can use Grip, and what should I put in the fstab file
to get it to mount automatically?
Any ideas??

Ravi,
The mouse characteristics are controlled from the Control Panel, under
Peripherals.

[newbie] Mandrake 8.1, VMWare and Networking

2002-02-05 Per discussione Greg Smith

I would like to attach to a network share on a MSWindows machine.
I'm stumped!!

Even just a referral as to where I can read up on this. I have found lots of
info on Samba and how to connect to a Linux share from an MSWindows machine,
but not the other way.

I am having a problem getting Java to work from the Konquerer browser. I

[newbie] fstab problem

2002-02-05 Per discussione Greg Smith

I have successfully configured the fstab file to mount the vfat partitions
that are elswhere on the hard drive, but I can't get the ntfs partition to
mount at boot.

Below are the lines I am using in fstab to mount the partitions on boot. The
vfat partitions mount automatically, but the ntfs partition won't. I have
double-checked and the mount points are correct as I can mount the ntfs
partition manually after boot up using these options.

/dev/hda1 /Win98 vfat umask=0,quiet 0 0
/dev/hda6 /Dnld vfat umask=0,quiet 0 0
/dev/hda5 /Win2K ntfs umask=0,quiet 0 0

Anybody got an idea?

Re: [newbie] Sound from a VMWare workstation

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've tried that. When I move the volume
slider up and down or the balance slider side to side, all I hear is some
scratching sounds. Weird. Any other ideas?

 Greg, a suggestion - just guessing :
 Open Sound Mixer (multimedia -- sound -- Sound Mixer) and try
 adjusting the sliders.

 Hmm...I remember having some sound-related probs too. It's all working
 now, so for your information, here are my settings : I've turned ALSA
 off ( Control Panel -- [root passw] -- System -- Services -- ALSA
 deselected ). Then, in the other (local - Small icon in kicker) Control
 Center -- Sound -- Sound Server, I've enabled aRts on KDE startup.
 There's a button : Test sound that should play the opening fanfare.
 Finally, in my /etc/lilo.conf the append line looks as follows :
 append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=nomount
 Especially, the nomount made everything OK.

Below is what the lilo.conf file looks like right now. Are you saying I
should change the append line to say what you quoted above?

default=linux
keytable=/boot/us.klt

menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/sda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append= devfs=mount

Also, forgive the stupid question being I'm new and all, but how do I edit

[newbie] Error during Install

2002-02-03 Per discussione Greg Smith

I have a Dell PC with a PII-333 processor, 384MB RAM, an on-board ATI Rage
3D video card and two 10GB hard drives. Windows 2000 Pro is installed on a
partition on the first hard drive and I'm trying to install Mandrake 8.1 on
the second hard drive. I chose the auto allocate fuction in the partition
section during install.

Everything goes fine until it tries to configure X when the following message
pops up.

Can't call method set_active on an undefined value.

There is an OK button available to click on, but no matter how many times I
click the OK button, the screen cycles back to this same message. My only
option at this point is to manually re-boot the machine. After re-boot, the
machine starts in console mode. When I try to startx it won't start.

Please help.  I'm new.
