[newbie] Mandrake 9.0 Windows XP Co-existing
I have version 9.0 of Mandrake. My hardware is an HP Media Center 873n. I'm having a problem getting Windows XP and Mandrake 9.0 to co-exist. I understand it's better to have Windows already installed when you try to install Mandrake. Is this correct? During the Mandrake installation process at disk partitioning time I have three choices (paraphrasing): 1. Erase entire disk. 2. Use the free space on a Windows partition. 3. Custom partitioning. Selecting option 2 fails. If I select option 3 Mandrake installs all right but trying to boot XP afterwards fails. From the little investigation I've done it seems that maybe I should be installing Windows into a small partition to begin with. But I don't see that the Windows installation process allows me to do that. Another possibility is shrinking the Windows partition before trying to install Mandrake. I'm completely Microsoft and Windows ignorant. Is there a freeware program that will allow me to shrink the Windows partition? Besides the above possibilities, is there something else I can do? -- Marshall Lake -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- http://mlake.net Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] I give up!
From what I've been reading here on this list I'm not the only one having issues with "POPping" my mail. I have completely removed postfix and ANYTHING that used it and re-installed sendmail. Thinking that I was pretty clever, because I used to be able to get sendmail and linux playing nicely together, I gave myself a little pat on the back. Once again went and enabled POP3 from inetd.conf and HUP'ed the ol process and when I tried and tested the "POPping" it didn't work I'm so frustrated at this point I'm ready to take a hammer to the machine or my head...but I think it would hurt me less if I hit the computer, but anyway...if anyone knows what step I've left out or steps i've left out please give me a hint! I just joined the list so I haven't been following whatever problems with "popmail" have been vocalized. But, I'm running 7.1, sendmail, postfix, and poptart and I haven't encountered any problems picking up pop mail. -- Marshall Lake - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://melake.erols.com http://melake.erols.com/the-beachhttp://melake.erols.com/genealogy
[newbie] idebus=66
I've installed 7.1 of Mandrake on my system. I get the following at boot: ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx My internal bus which the IDE uses will support 66 MHz. To /etc/lilo.conf I've added the line: append="idebus=66" to my first image section and have run lilo as root. But when I reboot I still get the above bootup message. Can anyone tell me what I'm not doing correctly? -- Marshall Lake - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://melake.erols.com http://melake.erols.com/the-beachhttp://melake.erols.com/genealogy
[newbie] USB Keyboard
I'm running the 7.1 vrsion of Makdrake. At bootup I get the following messages: usb.c: registered new driver keyboard input0: USB HIDBP keyboard keybdev.c: Adding keyboard: input0 keyboard: Too many NACKs -- noisy kbd cable? keyboard: Too many NACKs -- noisy kbd cable? After bootup the "Too many NACKs" message will reappear in my logs spuriously. And occasionally the "Too many NACKs" seems to interfere with the X server, bring it down, and make my system unusable until I reboot. "sounddrake" is an interactive command and I cannot find any docs for it. How do I run sounddrake at boot time so I don't have to execute it manually after every boot? -- Marshall Lake - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://melake.erols.com http://melake.erols.com/the-beachhttp://melake.erols.com/genealogy

MarshallI can tell you what I did to alleviate that problem on my system. I removed the Microsoft Natural keyboard from my system and replaced it with one made by somebody else (much less expensive too!). I've never seen that error again. Can anyone tell me what I'm not doing correctly? In a terminal, type "dmesg" w/o the quotes. Now scroll through the fairly lengthy mesage and you'll probably find that your hard drive IS running at 66 and your CDROM (likely) at 33. I've entered the commands: dmesg | grep 66 and dmesg | grep ide The only pertinent message I'm finding is the one above ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx -- Marshall Lake - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://melake.erols.com http://melake.erols.com/the-beachhttp://melake.erols.com/genealogy
