Boxed sets that come with a complete set of RPMs would be nice.

[newbie] 3Com/USR Professional Message Modem

2001-11-19 Per discussione Michael Carr

Hi,

I've finally found a way around the USR Professional Message Modem's
inability to negotiate a successful ppp connection with the PMM answer
machine facility disabled.

As it happens this was done within two separate terminal sessions, though
there's no reason (with the second ATZ removed) why it can't be
accomplished within a single session:

ATZ
ATF1+MCA=0
ATW
ATMCW

ATZ
ATS0=0
ATW
AT+MCW

[newbie] The 56K Professional Message Modem in Mandrake 8.1

2001-11-01 Per discussione Michael Carr

A sort of pre-sales query --

I've got a 3Com/US Robotics 56K Professional Message Modem, which worked
fine with Mandrake 7.2, SuSE 7.0 and 7.1, and currently (on the same PC)
with Windows 98 s.e, but not SuSE 7.2.

In SuSE's default dialler kinternet (much like kppp except for the security
vulnerabilities), a successful connection that progesses beyond the modem
handshake is apparently impossible. The same is true of wvdial; rather than
a usable connection, xconsole merely reports linux pppd [] Couldn't
release PPP unit: Inappropriate ioctl for device. kppp sometimes obtains a
successful connection as opposed to a time-out, but not on a reliable basis.
It should be pointed out that when the Message Modem is replaced by a
Diamond 56e Pro, using the same settings, no problems arise.

So I was wondering what results people were experiencing with their
Professional Message Modems in Mandrake 8.1...

Thanks in advance,

Michael

[newbie] A fault with sound in Mandrake 8

2001-07-08 Per discussione Michael Carr

Hi,

I've been encountering a rather peculiar fault with sound in Mandrake 8.

Following an entirely fresh reinstallation which correctly detected the
card's chipset as Trident Microsystems 4DWave NX, I noticed that kscd was
mute.

Opening kmix, turning up all of the faders to maximum (while checking none
had been set to mute), saving the configuration as the new default and
rebooting, I then noticed that while kscd was working properly, RealPlayer,
Noatum (the KDE media player) and xmms were mute, despite the files'
output being displayed on the analyser/oscilloscope.

HardDrake configuration tool's 8-bit sample was, unsurprisingly, also
silent.

It's enough to make you want to go out and buy SuSE 7.2. [joke]

Re: [newbie] Registered users

2001-06-04 Per discussione Michael Carr

If Linux is a free operating system under the GNU/GPL License, etc., etc.,
why do people insist in showing the rest that they are registered users?

For the reason that, as a freely redistributable operating system, the scale
of its use can't be determined by sales figures alone; the less Linux is
perceived as the specialist preoccupation of a handful of hackers, the more
hardware manufacturers, for example, will be inclined to extend their
official support.

[newbie] Most appropriate driver for the HP DeskJet 930C

In which case, is anyone familiar with a suitable driver for the HP DeskJet
930C (I suppose such a driver would also cover the 932C, if not the entire
900 series). I'd be looking for something compatible with the version of
CUPS shipping with 8.0, and capable of providing the kind of speed and
600dpi output familiar from Windows.

[newbie] Unusably slow printing in 8.0 using 'official' HP DeskJet drivers?

2001-05-30 Per discussione Michael Carr

I was wondering whether anyone using 8.0 is experiencing prohibitively slow
print-outs with the bundled HP DeskJet drivers.

I'm currently running 7.2, and while eager to upgrade I've heard horror
stories about the downloadable version's use in conjunction with other
distros.

Thanks in advance,

Michael
