Re: [newbie] Mandrake 8.0 doesn't work!!
I would reluctantly have to agree. That will teach me to be lazy not build my computer this past time! ;) Oh well, It's more fun building anyway... I'm sure that's what I'll do the next time I convince my wife it's time to upgrade. Thanks all for any help you have given. My install basically did the same thing. Would go all the way through the installation process but wouldn't boot. My system ( A Gateway 800 Athlon) would hang just before the press I for interactive boot message. I went through everything I could think of even purchased a new video card which I knew to be X compatable all with the same results. Got a copy of Red Hat 7.1 installed it and it runs fine. I really wanted to get Mandrake to work but for some reason it just doesn't like my machine. I had heard such good about it. Oh well, I haven't given up I may try a later version hopefully they will work out the bugs. - Original Message - From: nicholas allen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2001 5:20 AM Subject: [newbie] Mandrake 8.0 doesn't work!! Hi, Has anyone else experienced this problem? I had Mandrake 7.0 working fine and thought I would just install (not upgrade) to Mandrake 8.0 over the top. The installation finsihed sucessfully and there were absolutely no errors (event testing X worked). However, when I rebooted my machine I see the message welcome to Mandrake press I for interactive boot and then the system just freezes completely. I never had any problems before and my machine is less that a year old (Gateway 650 MHz processor with 30 Gig hard drive and 384 MB RAM). May be I'll just stick with RedHat as they seem to test theirs more thoroughly. I think Mandrake install is very unprofessional - I really don't know why everyone likes it. It looks bad and there are spelling mistakes - it just doesn't look polished to me. Also why is X configured at the end? This should be done way before you even install all the software! The reason I like Mandrake though is the desktop environments are better configured there is more software and it is up to date. If only they had a decent installation program like RedHat's it would be the best distro
Re: [newbie]HELP: Athlon, M7M and Radeon
I know all too well about the Proprietary architecture of certain peripherals inside my Gateway. I was not too pleased to find the Philips CDR I purchased with it had no brand name in the firmware so it couldn't be flashed with Philips updates. Not too surprising the Radeon card appears to be a special version for Gateway as well. I can't complain too much about the quality of my machine it has worked quite well as it was sold but I know as soon as replacement time comes, I will build from scratch as I have always done in the past. On a side note, if I do just replace the video card, are there any good quality sub $100 Cards that Linux likes from the get go without having to re-compile anything. I am a veteran in the Dos/Windows world but a virgin when it comes to Linux. TIA... (was a couple of years ago but just a call that said you had already installed linux would be the end of the warranty. - Original Message - From: Charles A Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Rick Shear' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Newbie (E-mail) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2001 8:43 AM Subject: RE: [newbie]HELP: Athlon, M7M and Radeon Rick Since only the Dell supplied driver will work in Windows you have received what in technical terms is known as the shaft. The card you have, while in fact a Radeon has been in some fashion manufactured to be proprietary to Dell. The only option I can see, other than buying a New card, is to contact Dell Tech Support in the hopes that they can provide you with assistance. I know the card requires a driver from Gateway to run windows. I haven't found one on ATI's site that will work. Maybe this card is just odd and causing the problem. The only other problem I could see is that I am installing on my second hard drive with lilo on the primary. I currently have 2 Radeon cards, a 32MB DDR and a 64MB DDR w/VIVO, and I think both cards are great. Both system, a Duron 800mhz and a t-bird 1.00ghz, have the ASUS A7V MOBO and Maxtor ATA100 hds. I have had no real problem either installing or running SuSE7.1, RH 7.1, and of course Mandrake 8.0. Additionally with Mandrake 8.0 I was using the experimental 3d hardware acceleration. Charles (-:
Fw: [newbie]HELP: Athlon, M7M and Radeon
I have an Athlon 800 with an AMD chipset. I also have an ATI Radeon card and cannot seem to get X to work. Tried 7.2... no luck. Tried 8.0 Won't even boot after install just hangs. Running x configuration during install locks system. Can anyone recommend a good ultra low end mobo/processor/video combo that will harmonize with 8.0. I want to set up a linux box to learn... doesn't have to be any kind of screamer. 3d graphics are of little importance. Re: [newbie]HELP: Athlon, M7M and Radeon
The chipset is the 751 Irongate. Unfortunately, I can't trade in the radeon as I have had the system for some time now. I got lazy this time around and bought a gateway about a year ago. My original video card in the unit had the GeForce 256 chipset but when that died, they swapped it out for this ATI board. :( Anyway, If I could find a mobo/processor combo with onboard video sound under $200 that would run linux I could setup another system swap between the two with a KVM switch. ... I know I made a bunch of people cringe with the onboard stuff, but as much as I dislike all in one mobo's, due to the price factor I will most likely have to go that way. Depending on the motherboard, it either works fine, or coughs up a hairball! Sound like you ended up with the hairball. Try changing the Radeon in for an ATi Rage Fury Maxx or something with a Rage128 chipset. I know for a fact that it will run great! I have 7 systems with the exact same configuration, and they're all bug-less. When you take the Radeon back, the money you save can be used for more RAM !!! Better yet, a Matrox G450 Dual-Head and twin 19 monitors! AAAaaagh ! ! ! Well, just a thought ! But seriously? the Rage128. You can't go wrong. By the way, which AMD chipset? Is it an Irongate chipset? Viper?? Cobra? Be prepared for a non-functional USB module. Also, try changing the mobo to an ASUS A7V. Use the old board in another system which runs Windows.
