[newbie] three questions

2002-07-12 Per discussione Stephen Britton

Hi Folks,

I have three questions that I can't seem to figure out with Mandrake 8.2.

1.) How do I change the name of my machine? While I was installing
Mandrake, I didn't put in a name, and the default was dhcppc5. I would
like to change it to something more suitable.

2.) How do I edit the shutdown script so I don't see KillAll [failed] on
the Mandrake shutdown screen when I turn the box off. I have been running
this Mandrake PC for a month and it has been great. I am convinced that if I
could edit this command out of the shutdown script, it would cure the
problem.

3.) How do I edit Apache so I can run Perl CGI scripts on my box. I am using
the Mandrake default Apache set-up and I cannot seem to get CGI scripts to
work. I have tried using the scripts in the cgi-bin and elsewhere and I keep
getting an error message like the 403 error below.

Forbidden You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/first.cgi on this
server.

Also, I want to thank everyone on this list. I have been lurking for the past
month and I have learned a great deal here.

Re: [newbie] IBM Hard Drives?

Western
Digital drives are by far the worst you can get. Thanks for the
heads-up on Western Digital. I have been using WD hard drives for
the past five years and have never had any
problems. I had once WD 8 gig IDE
drive run a file and print server for more than 100
straight days without a reboot. So now, I will get ready for them to
freeze up and die. :-}

Re: [newbie] Perl

So, It's not exclusively a linux programmers language ?
 The others use it too.

It's better for some things like internet use perhaps ?

One of the many great things about Perl is it can run just about anywhere.
Perl is used
on Windoze NT, Win2000, Linux. Solaris, etc. It has even been ported to
IBM's AS/400.

Perl is used for most CGI scripts, but I personally think it is better for
Unix administration.
There are other languages that I think work better on the web than Perl like
PHP and Java
Server Pages. Python is also a very interesting language.

Hi John,

Perl is a scripting language that comes standard with almost every major
Linux
distribution, including Mandrake. It's probably the most popular programming
language on the Internet. Perl can be used for many things from system
administration
to processing HTML forms. If you want more information and tutorials on
how to use Perl, visit O'Reilly's Perl.com and check out the Perl books at
Amazon.

Perl is also among the easiest programming languages to learn. If you have
ever wanted to become a programmer, Perl is a great place to start.

[newbie] what is KillAll and how do I stop errors

2002-07-05 Per discussione Stephen Britton

Good afternoon folks,

I've been running Mandrake on an old PIII 500 desktop for
the past two weeks and everything seems to be working fine,
except for when I go to shutdown (Halt). When I shutdown the
box and Mandrake goes through it's process, a command
KillAll pops up and then I get a failed message. It doesn't
seem to hurt anything and I have been ignoring it, but I would
like to get this machine running perfectly.

Could someone tell me what KillAll does and how I can
stop the error messages that I see when the machine
shuts down.

Thank you!

[newbie] CD-ROM player woes

2000-01-26 Per discussione Stephen Britton

I can't seem to get my CD player to play music. I
know that my sound card works because I can hear
the sample sounds when I configued by AWE32 sound card with
sndconfig, but when I slip in a CD and try to use
the CD Player in KDE, I can't get any sound. The
Player recognizes the CD and shows the corrent times
for songs, but still no sound. I have tried the obvious -
like cranking on the volume controls on the Player
and the Sound Mixer, and still silence. Any and
all help would be appreciate. I don't like singing
to myself.

I'm here, but I just joined this list 20 minutes ago. It does seem a bit
slow, especially for a Linux newbie list.
