Maybe you're right. I never saw a setting in

again. I never did boot to windows. I only used
 win4lin. It was wierd
because I was up during the time change, and it
 worked fine. I actually
left the machine on and when I came back in the
 morning, it was 2 hrs
behind. That's when started messing with the kde
 clock settings and
when I rebooted, the time was 6hrs behind (like
 KDE was assuming that
the hardware clock was set to GMT)

Actually I would be suprised if it was the BIOS,
 did you boot Windows at
some point? That would have changed the hardware
 clock. Since Windows
takes care of it, I don't see a BIOS manufacturer
 designing such a
feature. It would be wrong whatever OS you ran.
If it was a feature of
the BIOS I would expect there to be an option to
 turn it off.

OK here's my problem: Daylight savings time
 took effect the other
night. My BIOS seems to be capable of taking
 care of this itself.
KDE did too. So now my clock was 2 hrs behind.
 I used the KDE time
and Date configuration, and set it to the
 correct time CST (central
standard time GMT-6) and then when I rebooted,
 kde reported time 6
hours behind. In other words, KDE thinks the
 bios clock is set to
GMT. But in boot-up, linux reported the proper
 time. So this time I
set KDE to unspecified (UTC) and now the BIOS,
 KDE and Linux boot-up
report the proper time. However, Netscape mail
 tags all my messages
in GMT. Can somebody tell me the proper way to
 fix this problem.

Possibly you don't haveKED - Control Center
 - System - Date+time
  set
  to your local ?

It ought to then read your system clock and
 adjust it,but somehow it
  makes
little mistakes , so just alter it.

 Sawaddee:
About your modem: Your modem is _probably_ a
 winmodem. If you are not
familiar with that term, it refers to modems that
 are designed to work under
Windows -- and Windows only. If you had posted this
 question two years ago,
you would have been told that your modem won't work
 under Linux, and your
only remedy was to buy a real modem. But this is
2002, and as a result of the
efforts of some very smart and dedicated people in
 the open source community,
suitable drivers have been developed for many
 winmodems. Here are two
 excellent sources of information:
 linmodems.org
 www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

Before you go there, you'll need to have some more
 information about the chip
set used in your modem. Rockwell does not
 manufacture modems; rather they
manufacture the chip sets that are sold to the
 companies that actually
manufacture the modems. It isn't always easy to
 decipher exactly which modem
and chip set that you have. Typical Rockwell
chipsets are the HCF and HSF
families, but there are others. The FCC ID number
 (usually it's on a paper
sticker on the card) can be a big help. If you find
 the FCC number, you can
learn a great deal more about your modem at
 www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/.

Mandrake 8.1 includes Bastille, which is a good tool
 for installing and
configuring your system's security. Also, Mandrake
 has some very
 good articles at
 http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs.php#papers.

 Sawaddee,

You may be able to find drivers for your modem at:
 http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/

The drivers are for Conexant (Rockwell) HCF and HSF
 modems (and Riptide
sound drivers, if you need them).
