[newbie] Books about Linux

2000-12-24 Per discussione back focus

Howdy folks.

I figure that I'll be getting some gift certificates
from the bookstore this Christmas.

I am a complete newbie to linux. I installed
Mandrake 7.2 this weekend, and except for a minor
issue with ppp, it went on without a hitch.

Now, I want to learn to use my new toy. Could any
suggest some good books to learn linux with?

I have a very strong windows background, but need
some suggestions to learn linux. Anything you could
offer would be helpful!

Hoping to eventually answer, instead of ask
questions,
  -Craig

Hello! Last night, I made the jump to Linux. After
getting a copy of Mandrake 7.2 complete, I installed
the software onto my Compaq Laptop LTE 5400.

This is was a step that I had feared for a long time,
but I must say, that the auto-detect made the install
very, very slick. Now, I have a Linux platform! :)

There is one problem that I've come across though.
When I click the Internet Icon, I am getting an error
message that is titled: Error - KPPP

The body of the message reads: Cannot find the PPP
daemon! Make sure that pppd is installed.

I have attempted to connect with gnome-ppp, and have
set up my connection on that. When I attempt to
connect, I get a different error.

You don't have permission to execute pppd.

I get this error if I'm logged on as root, or as my
day-to-day user.

I have (I think) throughly searched through the
configuration menues to find a way to add the deamon,
but cannot find anything to add it.

Although I am VERY strong with MS based platforms, I
am unfortunatly very new (see: 12 hours) with Linux.

If some kind soul could point me in the right
direction to get my computer onto the internet, I
would be greatly thankful.

Some stats:
modem: PCMCIA Megahertz 56k x-jack card
CPU: 150mhz Pent I
RAM: 80 meg

Thanks much for any help you can give!
