I don't think you should use an "X" because you lose information.
Your estimate of birds heard is going to provide Ebird-level
information that is really not unlike birding "on the ground" during
the day either by ear or visually.

EBird guidance on "X".

Also, there shouldn't be a need to differentiate night flight counts
from day birding if you correctly enter time.

Andrew

Re: [nfc-l] Flight calling tonight in northeast US

2011-09-17 Thread Andy Martin
I too have heard that eBird folks are developing an NFC protocol of some
sort. In the mean time, last winter, I split my eBird sightings into 2
separate accounts; apmartin2 for my regular birding and apmartin2 NFC for
observations from my NFC recordings.

When I report species from NFC recordings I sometimes add numbers where I
can but always make sure to select "no" for "Are you submitting a *complete
checklist* of the birds you were able to identify?" Not sure how this phrase
applies to those of us that record NFCs? Yes, I am submitting a complete
checklist of birds I was able to identify but at same time there are so many
calls that I cannot id for sure. Figure safe bet is to check "no."

I also add to comment section "Species detected from nocturnal flight calls
or bird songs/calls recorded during night or dawn chorus."

Re: [nfc-l] Flight calling tonight in northeast US

2011-09-17 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi all,

I usually do just that--record an 'x' and comment number of calls. Unless
there is just one call, or multiple calls sufficiently spread out such that
I feel I can accurately judge the number of individuals.

I have heard that they are developing a protocol for entering night flight
calls into eBird (Stationary, Traveling, etc., and then one for flight
calls). But, I don't know what the time frame for that is.

First Gray-cheeked Thrush of the fall a couple nights ago!

Ted et al,

In heavy flights, usually record an x for each species and indicate
the number of calls/minute in the comment field (for each species, if
possible). Anyone with better ideas?
