I can't remember the last time I saw a CB650SC that didn't have the positive
going to the front right and the negative going to the rear right of the

I wonder if it was common to replace the wiring setup on them then if it's
not stock and kiwinPA has two that are the same. I believe you Kurt that it
is not stock as I found the copy of the service manual and it is clear that
the lead goes clear over to the left side. But yep, no problems yet.

I have read a lot of peoples issues where their CDI box went bad on this
model of bike or other various electrical issues. Now that I have a battery
tender I may just put the old battery in while I charge my new one if the
new one ever seems like it's getting low. The old one didn't seem too
old/bad, just very low on acid, and it not have been getting the current it
needed to recharge from the bike in the long run.

I notice here in Iowa (Ames) a lot of people do recognize my need for space
and are considerate, giving me extra room than if I was in a car. Sometimes
they don't pull up close enough to me at stoplights to trip the sensor.
They get confused when I motion them forward a bit.

Don't pretend that you are invisible, instead always ride as if the other
drivers do see you, are aware of your location, and are just waiting for
you to get into a vulnerable position so they can take you out. Recognize
situations where a car can take you out with a simple flick of the wheel or
tap on the brakes and avoid them. The best defense is a good offense.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: My First Bike - CB650SC ('82 or '83) - A couple small issues

2014-08-14 Thread Kurt Nolte
Yeah, that's definitely not the stock wiring, but it doesn't look like
trouble yet.

Also, the screw is probably stripped because it's not a Phillips bit. Most
of the "Phillips" screws on these bikes are actually JIS, a Japanese stres
standard that is similar but different enough that an American Phillips
won't fully engage.

Searching eBay for "jis screwdrivers" shows some results, a small
assortment should have all the ones you need for various screws on the bike.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: My First Bike - CB650SC ('82 or '83) - A couple small issues

2014-08-14 Thread Arlen Burroughs

Thank you all so much for your replies! What a great online community of
support!

So clearly by the image below, it's an 83. Thanks for that. Good eye on the
kill switch and shaft drive, also proves it's surely not an 82.

But that means there has been some tampering with the wiring as seen in the
next image. Positive post is on the right side! Don't mind the old breather
tube from the old battery is still attached. I may run the new breather
tube inside the old for a few inches if I can (the old breather tube is
loose at connecting end). That is the new Yuasa YB12A-A battery you are
looking at. I just filled it with acid yesterday, so no on the dry battery,
at least not till my next one. But it worked great for starting this
afternoon. I threw on the choke and she fired up right away! I honestly
think that the battery was the majority of the starting issue.

As for the choke adjustment, it looks like it is already adjusted all the
way to the bottom of that silver end on the cable. The screw is also really
stripped, but I'm sure I can get it with the right size phillips. I will
try in 17 hours after I sleep and work. Let's see how she starts in the
morning! Note to *kiwinPA's last message*, I think it is getting full
suction, you can see in the below pic that there is no air bubble in the
fuel line clear at the back.

As for the petcock, the leak is small, only dripping on the ground about
half of the times I park it. I've never even seen a drip fall, just close
to it when the fuel bunches up at the lowest point.

I will try out the advice given when starting cold. And I will always think
as if I'm invisible to other drivers!

Thanks again to you all for your help. I hope you enjoyed/appreciated my
photo feedback! It's something I'll probably always do whenever I post.

You need to either look for a used starter of get a rebuild kit and rebuild
