IIRC it's not that easy, and the distro has to be consistently providing
high-quality builds etc. to be allowed to use the Firefox brand. (I'm
personally perfectly fine with using non-branded version.)

I'm so glad to hear it, thank you for getting back to us! I'm going to
ask Mozilla about renaming our stable FF to Firefox.

It is indeed. Going to the Firefox home page (

using the latest version of Firefox." Sorry for the confusion.

I've asked in #firefox on Mozilla's IRC network. They've asked me to
come back and ask again in #build on Monday during US business hours,
but suggested we may indeed be able to have official branding.

AFAIK those restrictions were recently dropped, Debian's firefox is now
branded Firefox instead of Iceweasel. It probably should be changed in
nixpkgs too to prevent further confusion.

I believe this is all actually as you wish it. IIRC when you build FF
from source, it calls itself "nightly" by default. `firefox` attribute
is always the latest stable release, and we even have `firefox-esr` for
the latest longterm release. The versions are the same on nixpkgs
master and maintained stable releases, as security fixes are almost in
all FF updates.

[Nix-dev] NixOS 16.09 and Firefox Nightly

2017-03-05 Thread Mark Gardner
I thought that 16.09 is the stable release but Firefox Nightly was
installed when I upgraded yesterday. No idea how stable Nightly is but
according to
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/styleguide/identity/firefox/channels/, it is
the one of the least stable of the Firefox builds.

I know that some like to track the latest and greatest but I would prefer
that there be a stable release where experimental or "nightly" builds are
guaranteed to be absent. (I left Ubuntu and went back to Debian years ago
for this very reason.)

;Please make the current release as stable as possible (with only security
and serious bug fixes).
