[nlug] pyGTK, GTK.builder in Windows

2009-02-02 Thread Douglass Clem
Hello all. I have this annoying little programming problem that has been
nagging me for two weeks, despite my best attempts to research the answer.
Given the number of programmers on this list, I figured one of you might
know what I'm doing wrong.

I have an aerospace engineering student friend who is working on an
assignment to create a program that receives GPS coordinates from weather
balloons, rockets, satellites etc., and use this data to manipulate the
rotors that point the directional communication antennas towards the target.
To check out the code for the project, you can go to
http://launchpad.net/rotor-control-software.

The program is written in Python, with pyGTK/Glade for an interface. Our
problem is this: the interface works just fine in Linux, but when we run it
inside Windows, Python tells us that it cannot find gtk.builder, which is
the function needed to connect the signals to the XML file. I know that
gtk.builder is a part of libglade, but none of the libglade installation
instructions I have found online have worked. So if anyone has experienced
this problem before and knows how to fix it, I'd really like to hear from
you. Thanks in advance.

[nlug] DSL: Is it worth switching?

2009-02-02 Thread xor

I currently have Comcast cable as an internet provider, and have had
Comcast for the better part of 10 years.

Currently AT&T is offering a $125 rebate to anyone who switches to one
of their DSL packages. In addition they are offering $100 to
subscribe to their DSL Ultra package or better.

I currently have landline service with AT&T, so I qualify for the
rebates.

DSL Ultra is 1.5 Mbs up and 256 down. ($33/mo)
DSL Extreme is 3 Mbs up and 384 down. ($38/mo)
DSL Extreme 6 is 6 Mbs up and 512 Kbps down. ($43/mo)

I'm thinking the middle DSL Extreme would be sufficient.

With $225 in rebates, would it be worth the switch to DSL, or should I
just keep Comcast & be happy with it. Each month the $43 bill from
Comcast comes in & it seems a bit steep.

Also, I've heard that Comcast will drop your rate for a few months if
you call them & want to drop their service. Is that true?

While the rebuild is ongoing in a RAID6 (after a concurrent two disk
failure), I don't think you can have any drive other than the hotspare
fail.

I forgot to say, that I am about 2 miles from the Bellsouth CO that
would service the DSL if I signed up.

[nlug] Re: DSL: Is it worth switching?

2009-02-02 Thread Chris McQuistion
I would stick with Comcast. Their service is MUCH faster than DSL.
Here is the trick to getting a lower bill. I just did this a couple months
ago.

Call Comcast and ask for the customer retention dept. They will try to
argue with you and see if they can help you with your problem. Stick to
your guns and tell them that you only want to speak to the customer
retention dept.

Once you get transferred to customer retention, tell them that you are very
dissatisfied with the cost of keeping their service and you're considering
DSL and moving your TV service to Dish Network (which has a partnership with
ATT). Tell them that you would like to see what they can do for you, to
keep your business.

I made that call 2 months ago and they cut $35/month off my bill, for six
months, basically giving me the same rate that they would give a new
customer. In 6 months, when my bill goes up again, I'll call and gripe
again.

[nlug] Web business assistance request

2009-02-02 Thread Howard White

Hey gang,

Don't you just love these "I have a friend of a friend with a great web
business idea" posts?

Well, I have a friend of a friend with a great web business idea looking
for technical support people with LAMP and Druple skills. That is all I
know at this moment so if you are interested in, I suspect, a contract
support gig on the side, please forward me your contact information
which I shall submit, in strict confidence, up the chain.

Is it required that they still have any sanity... Drupal has problems.
It's very 'special' as in special olympics style. :)
