Many thanks for your pointer (and David Wilson's also). Jack is
included in the 64Studio distro and was demonstrated to us.

What I need to know is the hardware level. Plug the microphone into ???
to get [IP, USB, Firewire, voodoo] Never mind converting analog
cables and jacks from balanced to unbalanced to unshielded to GOK. Bear
in mind, the prime objective is to convert sources to IP as soon as
possible so that things like snakes (and spaghetti) are replaced with
gigabit IP :)

Great, I've got a PC with a ??? channel sound card which gives me ???
+/- 2 inputs but I got ??? + 10 sources.

[nlug] Thursday SBE meeting. Additional info.

2009-08-31 Thread David R. Wilson

This is just a reminder that Telos/Axia is providing box lunches from
Chik-Fil-A for this Thursday's meeting. Lunch will begin at 11:30am,
with the Axia presentation starting at Noon.

Like many TV & radio station parking lots, parking spaces are limited at
WAY-FM's studios. Jon Garrison at WAY-FM has arranged for extra parking
across the street at Honda of Cool Springs, so please take advantage of
their generosity and their parking lot.
See ya'll Thursday!

2009-08-31 Thread David R. Wilson

As Gibson mentions in a later email, yes it is open to the public,
however I would appreciate it if you will give me a heads up if your
going so we can scrounge up more food and make some room.
See Gibson's post for the details. I already called Kirk to let him
know we would have several attending.

The presentation is by the local chapter of the Society of Broadcast
Engineers (SBE) and is open to the public. The topic is about the Axia
IP audio system. Axia is designed for radio & TV stations (see
http://www.axiaaudio.com) and uses UDP packets over controlled
networks (i.e. local LAN). Locally, I know WRLT 100.1 and WAYM 88.7
use it and there are probably others. I've been out of radio
engineering long enough that what I wrote is about the extent of my
knowledge about it, other than it works very well.
The meeting is Thursday 09/03 at Noon at WAYM's studios at 1095 McEwen
Drive in the Cool Springs area. See http://tinyurl.com/SBE-WAY-FM for
directions.

Here is a cross-posting from the SBE Mailing List:

Society of Broadcast Engineers Chapter 103 Meeting Notice

Date: Thursday September 3, 2009 --- Lunch at 11:30 AM -- Meeting 12:00 Noon
Meeting Location: WAY-FM, 1095 West McEwen Drive, Franklin, TN
37067-1722 Phone: (615) 261-9293
Program:Planning, Building and Maintaining an IP-based Radio Facility

OVERVIEW:

The convergence of IT and radio broadcasting is upon us. Audio
routing, mixing and distribution via Internet Protocol - IP - have
become cost effective for both new installations and facility
upgrades. In fact, IP audio will likely be pervasive in the broadcast
plant within a very short time. Several manufacturers are embracing IP
audio technologies, giving rise to useful equipment and systems.

This IP audio workshop will cover what you need to know and
demonstrate how you can plan, implement, and maintain an IP audio
system in your facility. Learn how to design a system for redundancy
and convenient troubleshooting. Plus, hear from others' first-hand
experiences with IP audio implementation and maintenance.

Presenter: Kirk Harnack,
Executive Director, International Business Development, Telos / Omnia / Axia

Telos will provide our lunch at the meeting location.

GUESTS AND NON-MEMBERS WELCOME

I'd be interested in that. Who's putting on the presentation, and who

jack is one of the available interface kits for audio.

One site that might be of interest is http://www.rivendellaudio.org/

I sent Howard a heads up on a presentation about network audio for
broadcast that is this Thursday. If there are others interested let me
know. I will have to clear that through the people putting on the

Howard,

I think the droid you're looking for is the JACK Audio Connection Kit:

[nlug] Sound system over IP

2009-08-31 Thread Howard White

Another entry from the massive overkill department...

Many of you know that I have been involved with Asterisk for several
years including Voice over IP. Was involved in a discussion this
morning regarding an upcoming event for which a sound system is desired.
The usual things are needed: mixing board, microphones, a snake to
route all the stage sources to the board, monitor speakers, house
speakers. The conversation came to running cables - shielded, grounded,
ground loops, feedback, pops, clicks, hum. bt&dt.

After our wonderful 64Studio presentation in June and the Icecast
presentation in August, a wild hair got poking on me thinking "sound
system over IP???" The mixer part is done so long as you could digitize
all the sources to the 64Studio system. How to transition analog
sources to IP to be fed to the "board?" Then we want to Icecast the
output to remote appliances that feed power amps at the various
speakers. My first thought was to "connect" (by some magic duct tape)
all of the sources into an Asterisk meetme conference and then connect
that to an output but that sucks due to minimal mixing control.

Icecast is part of the magic duct tape.
Even if "we" had to run multiple Icecast servers to isolate source from
output... What is the cleanest way to get microphones and other analog
sources into IP to be fed to the IP mixer???

Can we have a side session at LinuxFest, September 19 to address this
opportunity? We could commercialize this!! Or at the very least we
could extend the 64Studio/UbuntuStudio concept to SSoIP!

[nlug] Re: Flyer for LinuxFest

2009-08-31 Thread gk

Hey Good morning Gang,

Cool little Pengy post we have there for the next installfest. I
happened to be at the last one and as far as the newcomers coming in
it was totally "free" for them. They didn't have to lift a finger and
quite a few wonderful people did a lot of stuf behind the scenes and
doing setup/tear down that defintely wasn't "free". But I know was
heart felt and passionate. So in that sense it was free. I know when I
first started with Linux about 6 years ago, being able to get a whole
OS for no cost was important to me because I didn't have much money. I
learned the philosophy of freedom a little later down the line. One of
the things that really struck home with me was The Rise of the Linux
Revolution I think it is called. That movie, which can still be found
on the web and if not I have a copy, really helped me understanding
the underlying concepts. A short one liner is not going to mean
anything really to the normal newb who probably doesn't even know how
to re-install Windows or what a partition is on a hard drive KISS
would be well applied to the whole event. It's not 911 and not brain
surgery. It's a group of people who are passionate about how to get
pieces of plastic, metal and glass working together.
