Great! I'll get the site updated. Yeah, we'll have a projector and a laptop or two (and Google Docs for whatever slideshow format you prefer...) Joey, what's your last name, so I can put your name on the site, along with Andrew McElroy, as the presenters? Re: [nlug] Virtualization with LXC (Linux Containers) vs Linux Vserver
- Original Message - > I mentioned at the meeting that I'm just getting started with LXC > virtualization--which is the officially blessed future of Linux > Vserver/"chroot on steroids" type of virtualization. (The extensions > required for LXC are now part of the mainline kernel, including the > stock Ubuntu 10.04 kernel.) I did some brief looking into it while waiting on some processes to finish at work Friday. The best I could figure out is that it isn't going to replace vserver anytime soon. It seems it is a lot like other options in the kernel, there are competing ways to do this and so as long as people are supporting it, it will remain in the kernel. It appears that lxc tries to be more like full virtualization in that the instructions point to making a bridge out of the real ethernet and connecting the guests to the bridge instead of directly with the ethernet card. This could lead to configurations like I have made before where you create bridges that do not connect to real ethernet cabling but rather serve as virtual networks between guests. But as I sit here and ponder this idea more, that is just a modification of the default configurations, not a technological feat. Vserver should be able to do this as well. It also looks like lxc has grown from the openvz project and continues to add features that are of interest to the hosting companies. Primarily the idea of setting disk and cpu quotas. This isn't always of need for home or business as you want any machine that needs cpu time to get it. Then again, I bet they are looking into that as well, and have some way of just giving some guests priority over others. As of right now, I don't see enough reason to change, but that speaks more to the I know this set of tools and they are not broken than anything else. -- Steven Critchfield cri...@basesys.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "NLUG" group.
