2010-08-10 Thread Justin W Elam
FYI
-from Joshua D. Drake
to > pgus-gene...@postgresql.org

As the United States PostgreSQL Association continues to grow we are
extending the services we provide to our members and the PostgreSQL.Org
community in the United States. I am pleased to announce that we have
budgeted for 4000.00 USD to be provided to United States based
PostgreSQL User Groups from September 2010 through December 2010.

Specifically the United States PostgreSQL Association is providing a
lump sum pool of 1000.00 USD per month to PostgreSQL User Groups in the
United States. This is a trial and will be available from September 2010
through December 2010 after which point it will be reviewed for further
applicability.

In order to qualify for financial support the following must apply:

 * The User Group member requesting reimbursement must be a United
   States PostgreSQL Member.
 * We must have receipts provided (fax/pdf).
 * There is only 1000.00 USD available in total per calendar month.
   First come, first serve.
 * The reimbursement request must be pre-approved.

If you are seeking reimbursement, email [ treasurer postgresql.us ]
The expenses can be for just about anything as long as it is in support
of the User Group.

[nlug] the iPad Killing Intel?

2010-08-10 Thread j...@coats.org
I thought it is an interesting article, Intel whining they aren't
selling as many high end chips
since more folks are doing 'web' or 'cloud' computing (sorry, no
buzzword bing winners here).
Possibly a topic to talk about at the meeting tonight.

Subject: Behind The Money: Is the iPad Killing Intel?
To: j...@coats.org

Behind The Money
By John Melloy, Executive Producer, Fast Money

Intel was clobbered after Barclays Capital said Apple’s iPad is eating
away at sales of PCs and netbooks that use its chips. The firm cut
shares of the world’s largest chipmaker to ‘equal weight’ from
'overweight.'

"The iPad's tablet momentum has pressured the broader netbook and
lower-end notebook arena," wrote Tim Luke, semiconductor analyst for
Barclays. "We recognize that reservations of Intel’s historically
elevated margins at 67 percent and uncertainties over its position in
growth areas such as Tablets may restrain the multiple investors
attach to current earnings."

Intel, the worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average
Wednesday, is now down for the year, while Apple is up 23 percent. The
two stocks began to diverge right on cue in April, when Apple released
the iPad that uses a self-designed called the "A4".

The downgrade by Barclays comes at a time when many value investors
are considering purchasing this stock at these levels. The analyst,
who includes a chart in his report showing Intel’s forward
price-earnings ratio at an all-time low, also cited a slowdown in
back-to-school PC sales based on channel checks in Asia. Tablet
alternatives using Intel’s Atom chip are more likely to be released in
the first quarter of next year, Barclays’ Luke said.

Other analysts were ganging up on the chipmaker as well. Baird cut
Intel to 'neutral', citing a "sharp deterioration in PC-related order
trends over the past week."

"Notebook units are now expected to be up at best 5 percent
sequentially for the third quarter, well below expectations,” wrote
Baird’s Tristan Gerra. A September demand rebound is "increasingly
unlikely."

Re: [nlug] the iPad Killing Intel?

2010-08-10 Thread Chris McQuistion
I hate reading these kinds of articles. It seems like analysts are always
putting out stupid opinions because having an opinion (no matter how
ill-informed) is what is expected of them.

The fact is, there are more computers being sold every day, around the
world, than there has ever been sold before. That trend will continue.
Most of those computers are using Intel CPU's or chipsets or other
products. That trend will continue.

I love small form factor devices and the ARM processors that run them, but
the volume of products that Intel sells is staggering! Any rumors of
Intel's demise are ill-informed.

Re: [nlug] the iPad Killing Intel?

2010-08-10 Thread j...@coats.org
I worked for Motorola in Austin for a while in the '90s. While I was
there they celebrated
selling over 1 Billion of one flavor of one of their 68xx processors
(I forgot which it was).
Ok Apple's changing processor using A4 (an Apple rather than Intel
design) instead of
Intel on iPad may change a little, but IMHO unless there is a real
change in useful
architecture that is widely accepted, Intel is still there for the long haul.

The Intel processor is getting a bit long in the tooth, but no one has
been able to come up
with a different architecture for mass market use that catches on in
quite a while.

Though, to be fair, it's not really factual to say that what Intel is
producing is "Intel architecture" anymore. Sure, it's backwards
compatible but it's had so many enhancements and bolt-ons that it's an
almost entirely different beast.
