kernel 3.12.6 with vbios-pq1.patch log

Here is the kernel log with the nouveau debug options Ilia asked, with the
vbios-pq1.patch applied. I booted with HDMI connected to the live TV, and I
manually loaded nouveau.ko after boot.

I'm happy to say that this change makes fbcon appear on the TV!

This also makes X show up on TV, and I can use xrandr to set the TV to full-HD
resolution, extending my desktop from LVDS. So they both came up fine this time
(I've had vague problems with using both outputs non-cloned before).

Wheee! \o/

So... that's better -- before it was completely shut off, right? I'll keep
looking at this to see if I can figure something more out. I think we're on the
right track, just not right enough.

[Nouveau] [Bug 73770] New: nouveau doesn't setup 1920x1200 mode on HDMI properly

  Priority: medium

   Summary: nouveau doesn't setup 1920x1200 mode on HDMI properly
QA Contact: xorg-t...@lists.x.org

Xorg.0.log

I have 1920x1200 60 Hz monitor connected via DP-HDMI cable to Lenovo T520
laptop.

Actual results:
I have configured 1920x1200 resolution (see xrandr).
Monitor's menu shows 1920x1080 input resolution.
Screen covers 1920x1080 physical area on monitor.
Fonts are blurry, seems like virtual screen image 1920x1200 reduced to
1920x1080 (When I configure 1920x1080 mode, fonts are OK).

nVidia binary blob can set 1920x1200 resolution properly on same HW
configuration.

Informations from EDID are correct, see Xorg.0.log.

Expected results:
Physical screen resolution on monitor should be 1920x1200.

I think there is some hardcoded limitation in DRM or nouveau driver. Because
hardware is perfectly capable of running 1920x1200 via HDMI.

dmesg video=DP-1:1920x1200

I cannot workaround it by adding this to kernel cmdline: video=DP-1:1920x1200
nor using xorg.conf Modeline and PreferedMode options.

At least DRM allocates 1920x1200 instead of 1920x1080, but I don't any
other change from actual results.

Corrupt background also occurs after a cold boot (i.e. from power off), but in
this case, there is no security problem of course: I just get a blank
background, possibly with random black points.

   |NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS  |with NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS

--- Comment #4 from Ilia Mirkin imir...@alum.mit.edu ---
Ah, interesting. This is a different 8400 GS than I thought (marketing names
are so misleading). That PCRYPT=0 thing will do nothing useful. But it
might still be the same issue I thought it might be, just not as visible in
kernel messages.

Can you grab a copy of envytools (https://github.com/envytools/envytools) build
it, and run

nvapeek 1540
nvapeek 154c

and report back with the results of those commands? (You can do this while on
blob drivers as well as nouveau, doesn't matter.) Additionally, try booting
with nouveau.config=PCE0=0 in the kernel cmdline and see if that fixes your
issues. (That should cause it to use M2MF instead of COPY for buffer copies.)

OK, yeah, it's not at all the thing I thought it might be -- your PCOPY engine
is intact:

$ lookup -a a8 1540 f2010001
PBUS.HWUNITS_0 = { TPC_MASK = 0x1 | PART_MASK = 0x1 | MP_MASK = 0x2 | UNK28 |
UNK29 | VDEC | UNK31 }
$ lookup -a a8 154c 023d
PBUS.HWUNITS_1 = { PCIE_VERSION = 2 | PCI_CLASS = DISPLAY | PDISPLAY | UNK3 =
0x3 | PVLD | PCIE_SPEED = 2P5GT | PCOPY }

So... it's something else. Sorry, that's of little help to you.
