[NSP] Manchester Group of Northumbrian Pipers

2006-09-14 Thread Neil Tavernor
The Manchester Group of Northumbrian Pipers invite you to join us for our
monthly 'play togethers', we have pipers who combine the afternoon with visits
to relatives in the area and pipers who turn up occasionally. It's all very
informal,we play in a group everyone gets the chance to pick the next tune and
when the good players pick a difficult one people like me stop at the end of
bar two, Tom Mullen keeps us in time and people talk about the bits of their
pipes that aren't working properly. Plus cup of tea and a biscuit.
The only thing guaranteed is that you will be most welcome.

Meetings are held at the Cheadle Hulme Baptist Church hall from 1430 to1730 and
the next three are 14th October, 4th November, 2nd December 2006.

Address:- Grove Lane Baptist Church, Pingate Lane South (off Grove Lane),
Cheadle Hulme, Cheadle SK8 7NP

Directions:- Manchester Ring Road M60 Junction 3
A34 south signed Congleton to second roundabout turn left
B5094 straight on at mini roundabout
You are now on Grove Lane
Pingate Lane South is on the left

From the south on the A34 the B5094 is right at the second

[NSP] Manchester Pipers' Group - Pipers' Day

2007-07-25 Thread Neil Tavernor
Tom Mullen and Ron Blake founded Manchester Pipers' Group more than 30 years
ago and the group has held an annual Pipers' day for about 25 years. I am told
( as a recent arrival on the scene) that the day and particularly the evening
concert has over all those years acquired a name as a relaxed and enjoyable day
out. I've certainly enjoyed the last few years.
Due to changing circumstances the 2006 concert was restricted to the daytime
with only a very short after tea concert. The 2007 concert has had to be moved
to a new venue ( the one the group now use for their regular monthly meetings)
and for the first pipers' day in the new venue we are repeating the daytime
only formatt. BUT look at the tutor line-up, what a formidable trio of talent.
The members of the Manchester Pipers' Group are very keen to know what support
there is for a return to the 2100 hrs finish with a proper evening concert and
anything else you would like to see included in the day's programme.
As we all know, but I'll say it anyway, the success of a pipers' day, with
regard to its viability, can only be measured in terms of the number of pipers
that attend. So thinkig ahead to next year we need to make the 2008 day one
that will change the 'might attends' into 'will attends'.
So please let us know your thoughts; contact Malcolm Craven, still a driving
force in the Manchester Group even though he has retreated from the North West
Frontier back to home ground in Northumberland or contact Margaret Watt who is
also taking bookings for the 2007 Pipers' Day e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] or me,
the e-mail arm of Tom Mullen or Tom himself by phone. BUT better still come to
the 2007 Pipers Day on 8th September and tell us then.

Dear Neil,

Many thanks for the response. I appreciate your comments, and can only thank
you for making the effort you are doing, which is appreciated.

The event takes place at "Gnosall Community Centre" and we have said on the
tickets that it will start at 8.00 and finish at 11.30.

In this age of SAT Nav's and the internet if I give you my post code it may
help as Gnosall is quite a small village with the Community Centre being on the
High Street. ST20 0QS.

We would provide a meal (Hog Roast + with a few bits of Northumberland) for
anyone who could attend and guests, say up to four, and we would pay for travel
expenses (within reason - I'm an accountant (J). We would envisage having the
meal, and then having an introduction to the pipes and the playing of a couple
of pieces, after the meal, with the band taking over after that with a Ceilidh .

We are not looking for a professional musician, but someone who can introduce
us to this "Northumbrian" instrument. We would just appreciate seeing it and
hearing it live. Everyone we have mentioned it too have said "wow it would be
great to hear it played".

Again, many thanks for taking this on board, even if nothing comes of it, I
appreciate the fact that you are interested.

Kind regards

Frank Hogarth.

Hello, whilst all the people involved in the Manchester group love the pipes,
very few ever play publicly, although a group of ten or twelve have played on
three or four occasions (church fair, charity fund raise etc.). However I will
do what I can to help and that is:

e-mail to the members of the Manchester group who use e-mail.

discuss at the next group meeting (a week on Sat).

send it to an interenet site used as a forum by a wider group of northumbrian
pipers.

But first a few more details please. 6th June is a Friday but what time, venue
(near Birmingham?), parking, availabilty of food if distance travelling
involved and anything else you can think of.

  Dear Mr Tavernor,

I have been given your e-mail, by Gordan Greenley, and I wonder if you are
are able to help.

I do wonder if it is too far for someone to come, bearing in mind it would
only be for a small part of the evening.

My problem is that for me the pipes are an essential part of Northumberland,
and would just set the overall tone for the evening, and everyone who we have
told that we were hoping to have a Northumbrian piper player there were
absolutely delighted.

I suppose we just want to hear, what for a lot of people is an instrument
they don't get to hear very often.

Regarding the wider debate I think that, to use Debbie Lawther's term

The best musical experience of the year.

Those who were present will probably agree. Those who weren't, sadly
missed an example of piping at its finest.

I think I've just wasted nearly 30 years of playing and entering
competitions. All of the judges, to my knowledge, judged my playing on
the closed method as well as other things. Even Forster Charlton
metioned to me that I ran my notes together, many years ago, so he was
a believer in the closed method. It seems to me that the true sound of
the pipes will be lost because people wont spend the time to
play closed fingering and the associated tunes with variations.
Playing

a succesion of detached notes is a wonderful sound, when playing the
variations to a tune; they become something hypnotic, almost dronal.

I should have taked up the Irish pipes!

  Hi everyone,

I have just listened to Andy May's new CD "Happy Hours" and have to say
that it is fantastic. I think Andy has actually had the CDs for a
little while, but it doesn't seem to have had much publicity yet, so
thought anyone who hasn't heard about it yet might like to know.

There's some lovely stuff on it - everything from Peacock to Hill to
some of Andy's compositions and a great set of Galician tunes. There
are also some great guests on it - including Andrew Davison playing on
a duet track which culminates in the wonderful Glasgow City Police
Band. The title track "Happy Hours" has much more of a band feel to it
& has great lift & life. Of course Andy's playing itself is as
  fantastic as always.

Perhaps he can send an email & let everyone know where to buy it!

  Pauline (not on commission!)

This was my response to Bob's post, also sent offlist.

On 21 May 2009, Robert Greef wrote:

can you please clarify?

1) will the presidential election be by a vote at the EGM?

No, the EGM is a ratification process of a candidate already selected
by the committee. (see rules, p. 57, item 5)

2) are proxy votes allowed, or is it by members present?

To date, it has always been members present.

3) is there a fixed counting process e.g. secret
ballot, show of hands etc?

Previous presidential elections have been by popular acclamation.

4) is there a fixed list of candidates

prior, or can nominations be received from the floor?

See (1). Colin was trying to persuade the committee to open the
process to members, but as Susan correctly states it is otherwise in

the current rules, and the committee feel they have to abide by them.

I hope this helps
Julia
