Yes, I know that. Of course, I could have forgotten, but I didn't this time:
  $ find /usr/local/share/texmf -name cont-sys.tex
  /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-sys.tex
  $ kpsewhich cont-sys.tex
  /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-sys.tex
  $ grep mapfiles /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/context/base/cont-sys.tex
  \autoloadmapfilestrue
  % \resetmapfiles \usetypescript [map] [base] [all]
  \resetmapfiles
So, unfortunately, the answer is not quite that simple.
I notice in your post on the teTeX list that your cont-sys.tex
explicitly loads a couple of map files. At first glance that doesn't
seem related, but do you think it might be?

You know, I have a feeling this is really a problem with pdftex--either
an error in my texmf.cnf or a software bug. I have previously had
problems with pdftex failing to find resources in $TEXMFLOCAL; in the
past I have worked around this by moving files into $TEXMFMAIN, but I
want to avoid that if at all possible--I use the teTeX package from my
Linux distribution, and I'm tired of having my changes overwritten every
time I upgrade.

So, I appreciate your help so far. Still looking for a solution ...

Re: [NTG-context] Re: fonts installation

2004-12-08 Thread r . ermers
Hi Patrick,

Well, what I wanted is to install and use a new font called Hudson. It is a
font that consists of just one file (hudson.pdf + hudson.afm).

I installed Hudson with texfont, but I got a serious error message. Apparently
I need a line like this in my file:

\definetypeface[hudson][rm][serif][palatino][default]
\setupbodyfont[hudson,12pt,rm]

Then I got a cryptic error message which referred to the font ec-uplbi8a.
Someone found out that the palatino font may not be correctly installed on my
system, even though in Latex I don't have any problems.

Willi advised me run texfont on texfont.bat, which installs Palatino and a
number of other fonts.

Nevertheless, still one palatino size (720) apparently is not available. (The
pdf file that results is corrupted.) I guess that size has to be generated in
some way or another.

Well, my goal still is to use the Hudson font, and palatino, of course. The
suggestion in the Wiki does not work either, I'm afraid.

With the instruction
\usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding]
\setupbodyfont[palatino,12pt]

from the Wiki, the log file reads:

Warning: PDFETEX (file ec-raw-uplr8a): Font ec-raw-uplr8a at 720 not found
Output written on testhuds-con.pdf (1 page, 1869 bytes).

But this warning comes up whatever I do.

I am totally lost now.

Kind regards,

Robert

Thanks everybody.

I think we have come close to a solution...

I used the batch file Willy advised me. (Afm2tfm is interrupted, when called
through texfont; I don't know why. Everything seems to work normally though.)
It generates a lot of font files in a batch. Very handy, I must say!

After that I tried my test file again. Still the palatino font is still not
found. I don't know anything about my hudson font.

I guess I still need your help, it's very much appreciated!

See the log fragments below.

The overlapping picture indicates its dimensions compared to a A4 page

Hi Robert,
Context/pdftex is looking for a file ec-uplr8a.tfm, which is apparently
not on your system or not in the searchpath of kpsewich or it is not in
your mapfile. .
If you are using the minimal-distribution from Pragma, then you obtain
this file free of charge. If you use another distribution you will have
to install these files with texfont. See

I do hope this will help solving your problem

The cont-sys.tex is not installed by default. You have to copy
cont-sys.ori or cont-sys.rme to cont-sys.tex.

well, I use the one from tetex:

/opt/tetex/20041128/texmf/tex/context/user/cont-sys.rme except for:

\usetypescript[adobekb] [\defaultencoding]
\setupoutput[pdftex]
\pdfoptionpdfminorversion=4

in my cont-sys.tex.

Right. I think it was named something like "tetex issues".

Do you mean your exchange with Thomas Esser near the top of the list?

Is this really true these days? I remember that in the past pdftex and

was still the case. Is mapfile.c from dvips and pdftex really the same file
these days?
discussion on the tex live list about files being generic ended up nowhere since
there is nothing generic defined;

i put the files under pdftex because i want the freedom to adapt them to changes
/ bugs / whatever when needed; for instance i (and users) can manipulate these
files by removing font names, which will make them non-dvips;

anyhow, when the new pdftex is distributed and available widely i will probably
no longer use map files but do run-time definitions (using \pdfmapline);
dvipdfmx will provide similar features

As far as I can see, the font problems come down to only a few
different problems:

1) the standard fonts don't work -> use adobekb
2) my typescripts for my new fonts don't work -> ask here
3) pdftex doesn't find my mapfile -> write page for the wiki
4) other (more difficult) questions -> ask Adam L. :-)

So font problems are not all the same, and some already answered on
the wiki (although sometimes not complete).

2004-12-08 Thread Thomas Esser

That's the wrong location. There is nothing pdftex specific in these
files, so the "syntax" is dvips, not pdftex. I have told Hans about it.
The level below fonts/map is "syntax" according to TDS 1.1.

The TDS tells us where to put those files and even though Hans does not
care much about dvips, I suggest that he moves his files. Some files
don't have a proper newline in the end, so they are not even proper
text files. Thers is no non-whitespace difference between teTeX's files
in fonts/map/dvips/context and cont-tmf's fonts/map/pdftex/context,
so you can just ignore the files from cont-tmf.

So, I suggest that you

unpack cont-tmf.zip in a temp directory
  rm -rf fonts/map/pdftex/context
  rm -rf tex/latex
  cp -a * /to/your/texmf-dist

(teTeX has aliases for the files that context distributes in tex/latex,
so we don't need these files).

[NTG-context] texmfstart

2004-12-08 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi,
A next release of texmfstart will provide
  texmfstart bin:xsltproc kpse:somefile.xsl somefile.xml
this means that one can put for instance xsl scripts (and whatever file) in the
tree without the need for explicit paths; another application is:

  texmfstart bin:scite kpse:cont-sys.tex
(or whatever editor you use); so, this will locate the actual cont-sys file and
let you edit it, which is more convenient than locating the file in the tree first.

Another (experimental) feature is:
  texmfstart --iftouched=old.pdf,new.pdf dosomething.rb old.pdf new.pdf
which will only execute 'dosomething' when old and new have different time
stamps. (This is a prelude to a more advanced 'runtime' graphic manipulation
feature.)

I also updated the manual (will be synced when i update the distribution).

2004-12-08 Thread Wolfgang Zillig
Hello Robert,
I think that is the same problem I had
add
\usetypescript [adobekb][\defaultencoding]
\definetypeface[hudson][rm][serif][palatino][default]
\setupbodyfont[hudson,12pt,rm]
to your code.
Tomething like this will work too:
\usetypescript [adobekb][\defaultencoding]
\usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding]
\setupbodyfont[palatino,12pt]
This was the final solution from Patrick last day.
