A book is not at all a repository of code or a reference.
It can be foundational, and in that case you'll just keep on reading
for many years.

A serious update and expansion of the manual would be enough.

I guess that with the upcomming luatex, mkiv or other lua-metapost,
there
will never be a context book!?
... but I hope there will be a mark (or any next conTeXt name) book

ConTeXt is not a simple language library, but a full typing system
which need a true documentation.
So, even if a command reference could be read online (or in source
code ;-),
An extended user manual (e.g. equivalent to the old manual + the
official
tabular system, + ...) is still needed.

A ConTeXt book would provide a stable base for learning ConTeXt.
The ConTeXt version would also serve as basis for features, and any
future online docs could be classified as before (read obsolete)
or after the context book.

Also all ConTeXt features from the book should be suppose to work
except if mentioned in an online correction documentation.

P.S.
I don't use any more ConTeXt for some raison (I come back to LaTex)
But I keep looking at the mailing list and I hope to come back to
ConTeXt
some months later.
I keep thinking that ConTeXt is the future of LaTeX!

I cannot understand why \setuppagenumbering is relevant for such a behavior

You could either use only

\setupbackgrounds[page][leftframe=on]

this will draw a rule at the the left margin at all pages.

The result is something like

| |
| |
|1 | 2
| |
| |

The second solution draws only a frame at the left margin
on even numbered pages.

Because odd and even numbered are only known in doublesided
documents, the value singlesided, doublesided arguments for
alternative in \setuppagenumbering is a little bit special because
it activates left and right pages but use the same layout for all
pages.

I used it here to draw only a frame on the right page of the printed
paper to avoid a unwanted rule at the side of the left page.

The output for two pages should now look like:

  |
  |
1 | 2
  |
  |

I guess that with the upcomming luatex, mkiv or other lua-metapost,
there will never be a context book!?

Why, the interface will not change, you shouldn't notice any difference
between pdfTeX, XeTeX or LuaTeX.

MkIV has a new method (xml setups) to use XML files but the old one
(xml definitions) could be used without problems.

Font setup changed slightly with MkIV but this happened also for XeTeX
a few times in the past.

The rest conceirns only bug fixes or new features.

... but I hope there will be a mark (or any next conTeXt name) book

http://www.pragma-ade.com/show-man-41.htm

ConTeXt is not a simple language library, but a full typing system
 which need a true documentation.
So, even if a command reference could be read online (or in source
 code ;-),

http://www.pragma-ade.com/show-man-10.htm

An extended user manual (e.g. equivalent to the old manual + the
official tabular system, + ...) is still needed.

You could try to merge the big manual and the starter manual.

The sources are available only.

A ConTeXt book would provide a stable base for learning ConTeXt.
The ConTeXt version would also serve as basis for features, and any
future online docs could be classified as before (read obsolete)
 or after the context book.

None of ConTeXt's manuals are obsolete, the big manuals provides
the basic for daily works and the other manual cover special topics
like colummns, integrations of MetaPost ...

Also all ConTeXt features from the book should be suppose to work
except if mentioned in an online correction documentation.

Here it seems it doesn't load the encoding file because it

ec-qplr:tfm (ec encodign).

Perhaps qplr.pfb is missing? The crash could be a luatex bug then,
it is definately possible there is an incorrect fclose(NULL)

try that please?

The actully using pfb instead of otf sounds like a mkiv problem.

I have indeed removed all the afm files from the font, if that's part
of your question.

  Perhaps qplr.pfb is missing?

I have it on the disk, but it doesn't get so far to load it (maybe
because it crashes before, or I don't know).

The crash could be a luatex bug then,
it is definately possible there is an incorrect fclose(NULL)
somewhere when the enc is there but the pfb isn't. Can you
  try that please?

qplr.pfb is there, but even if I remove it :) nothing changes.

The actully using pfb instead of otf sounds like a mkiv problem.

mkii as well. The same problem happens in XeTeX (not with fclose, but
alone the fact that the old fonts are used instead of otf).

[NTG-context] page numbering question

2008-04-09 Thread David C. Walden
Hi,

I have been searching contextgarden.net and the
manuals at the Pragma website for more than an hour
now, and I have yet to find a way to have ConTeXt
decide in two-sided mode that the last page
of a book chapter is a even numbered page without
anything on it and therefore will also not have
a page number. I probably can manually effect
this by carefully inserting \setuppagenumber
commands which start and stop the state, but
that's not a very general solution. Will
someone please point me to appropriate documentation
or an example.

Thanks, Dave

[NTG-context] Short question regarding PDF bookmarks

2008-04-09 Thread Dietrich Rordorf / MDPI
Hi everybody,

Default setting when creating pdf bookmarks (e.g. for \section,
\subsection, etc.) seems that the bookmark points to the page (it zooms
out to fit the whole page), rather than only going to the referenced
object:

E.g. try to click on a bookmark on this pdf (365 KB):
http://www.mdpi.org/marinedrugs/papers/md6010001.pdf

An example where the bookmark points to the object, and will not affect
the current magnification/zoom:

http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1741-7015-4-14.pdf

Can this be realized in ConTeX?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Re: [NTG-context] page numbering question

2008-04-09 Thread David C. Walden

I am not sure what you want. Do you want the last page of chapters to be
numbered or do you want them to be completely empty?

I want even numbered last pages of chapters which have no text
or images on them to be completely empty.

I tried various versions of the code for Truly empty page
breaks at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Titles that
Jörg's message about \definepagebreak led me to, and I
tried various versions of the additional discussion
about Again: How to make empty pages by default empty?
from November 2003 in the NTG-context archives. I couldn't
make any of that work within the last half hour or so.
Thus, I have now changed my macro which begins chapters
so it turns off page numbering before the \chapter call
and turns page numbering back on after some text has
been place on the first page of the chapter and that
now does what I want. So, that's kind of a brute
force approach to getting these completely blank
pages automatically. Thanks everyone for your
suggestions. -Dave

Well, that's the thing: it seems to us that whenever context finds PFB
files for the tex-gyre fonts (qplr.tfmpfb in this case), it will use
those, totally ignoring any opentype fonts that are also installed.

I want even numbered last pages of chapters which have no text
or images on them to be completely empty.

I tried various versions of the code for Truly empty page
breaks at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Titles that
Jörg's message about \definepagebreak led me to, and I
tried various versions of the additional discussion

Does this do what you want (at least in this test case)

 \definepagebreak
[mychapterpagebreak]
 [yes,header,footer,right]

 \setuphead
   [chapter]
   [page=mychapterpagebreak]

 \setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided,location={header,margin}]
 \setupheadertexts[{My special headertext}]
\setupfootertexts[This is a text in the footer]

 \starttext
 \chapter {testA} \dorecurse{10}{\input tufte }
 \chapter {testB} \dorecurse{10}{\input tufte }
 \chapter {testC} \dorecurse{10}{\input tufte }
 \stoptext

Notice that the pages at the end of the chapters are empty.

about Again: How to make empty pages by default empty?
from November 2003 in the NTG-context archives. I couldn't
make any of that work within the last half hour or so.
Thus, I have now changed my macro which begins chapters
so it turns off page numbering before the \chapter call
and turns page numbering back on after some text has
been place on the first page of the chapter and that
now does what I want. So, that's kind of a brute
force approach to getting these completely blank
pages automatically. Thanks everyone for your
suggestions. -Dave

This is what I have in my setup

It is not perfect (sometimes jumps slightly higher or lower), but I find
it much better than the default behaviour.

[NTG-context] Leopard and ConTeXt

2008-04-09 Thread Steffen Wolfrum
Hi MacUsers out there,

until yesterday I worked with 10.4 and a recent context: no problem
(only mkII).
Today I finally set up a new machine with 10.5. and MacTeX, run
ctxtools --updatecontext.
Running a context-file now gives me the right context-version but
ends up with:

TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [save size=5000]

Well, I remember this was something about texmf.cnf (or context.cnf?).
So I changed the value to 1, remade the format but still the echo
mentions 5000.
Some known problem with Leopard and ConTeXt? Maybe PATH stuff?

=o(

Please help!!!

Steffen

Does that happen with every file, or just with some? I have this in my
texmf.cnf:

save_size = 5000% for saving values outside current group

and luatex runs finde, so I suspect something is wrong with your file.

I thought I tried that on my book and it didn't work.
My actual situation is more complicated with declarations
of front matter, depositing of \completecontent, etc.
However, I have now done it with the test case expanded
to mimic my real situation and it does seem to work.
I'll try it in my real file (again?).

the type-gyr is only meant for type one usage and maybe we should merge

hm, this puzzles me because i have afm/pfb/otf on my system

tfm too? I only get the problem if the qplr.tfm is found

 luatools --all *qplr.*
 c:/data/develop/tex/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/tex-gyre/t2b-qplr.tfm
 c:/data/develop/tex/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/tex-gyre/ts1-qplr.tfm
 c:/data/develop/tex/texmf/fonts/afm/public/tex-gyre/qplr.afm

That's strange. Here this command gives:
103 ~: luatools --all *qplr.*
/usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/powerpc-darwin/luatools:4392: bad argument
#1 to 'pairs' (table expected, got nil)

allthough:

104 ~: find /usr/local -name *qplr.*
/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/afm/public/tex-gyre/qplr.afm
/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/tex-gyre/cs-qplr.tfm
/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/tex-gyre/ec-qplr.tfm

Any idea what can be wrong?

Not all can be wrong though, because
texmfstart texexec --luatex luatest1.tex
typesets a file containing lua code.

however, even with pfb i don't get the error, so this is still something
 weird

It is an array access that goes out of bounds, so it could be
somewhat system-dependent. It will _certainly_ only happen if the
tfm is used, the afm-based font is in wide encoding, and that is
perfectly safe as it doesnt need to array indices at all.

The fclose errors are just a side-effect of the real crash
and happen after that has already happened. The crash
manifests itself as just another

   ! Emergency stop.
   * a.tex

But like I said, it may not happen always. Out of bounds errors
do that, sometimes.

Best wishes,
Taco

One needs to delete afm files (without using Taco's latest patch).

The output of XeTeX is to be expected, but I don't know why the map

you mean that for xetex map files are loaded? if we can assumt that

Sure. But there is one thing that I don't understand and needs to be
resolved even before adding NEWTEX on top of type-gyr. Why are the
Type 1 fonts used at all? If I say \usetyscript[postscript] (no
[ec]!!!), why do I get the Type 1 fonts instead of OpenType? Shouldn't
a couple of additional definitions with ec/texnansi encoding be rather
harmless (i.e. should not influence OpenType fonts)?

I suppose not (it's not the file you modified, right?). But then, as
Thomas said, there's probably something special in your ConTeXt file
 (I
always had save_size = 5000 and never had any problem with it). For
this purpose, it might be sensible to modify TeXLive / MacTeX's
texmf.cnf (this is generally frowned upon, but, well it is your own
 installation).

Before modifying that file I just wanted to make sure that it's not a
leopard/path thing I missed:
OK, I did it. Now it works fine again.

Thank you!

we use names like TimesRomen-Bold internally and type-gyr maps to pfb
variants and since it is loaded *after* the otf definitions it wins
