[NTG-context] FunnyFrame in an enumeration.

2008-12-23 Thread Fabrice

Hi,

Playing with metafun, I saw the FunnyFrame example (page 239 MetaFun
screen manual), where a framed is put around some paragraph and this
frame has a small framed title inserted at the top of the framed
paragraph. I would like to do a similar output but in the context of
an enumeration. I am able to obtain the main frame by a proper
definition of the \definenumeration, but not the title !

For clarity, a sample test file is provided below.

I have tried to look in the mailing list for some examples that can
help me, but no luck ! Do you think this is something feasible ? I
wouldl take any hint !

Thanks,
Fabrice.

Re: [NTG-context] fullpage and XeTeX typescript

2008-12-23 Thread Yue Wang
Concerning the second question, the following is the reply from Hans
months ago to me.
I think Hans is right, since fonts are quite complex, but it *will* be
a lot easier if we have that mechanism since this mechanism will be
applicable to most fonts.
If there are fonts that fontconfig cannot handle well, then the user
can define them in the old way.:

Yue Wang wrote:

i never looked into that interface so i cannot comment on it, but i've
learned my lessons with fonts ... they are all different and any 'clever
automated mechanism' will at some point fail, so then one ends up with
exeptions; when defining a document style one needs to know the font,
its usage (what variants, styles, etc) and often also it slimitations
(font feature are not that well defined and fonts might have incomplete
implementations)

the best one can do is make a typescript (or a collection, as with tex
gyre which tries to be consistent over the whole range) that implements
a definition and even then, a different version of a font (i mostly use
commercial fonts and font ABC may have different implementations) may
hav edifferent properties; also, there is not one good usage (typescript
combination) of a specific font, esp now that we have many features

actually, talking about features, you need to keep in mind that even
when you define a specific instance, applying such an instance to a
whole document might fail because some features may not cover the whole
possible set of combinations of characters (take frac as an example) and
so usage demands knowlegde

eventually we may have a set of predefined typescripts that cover most
system fonts

tug version will work in both mkiv and mkii. (I mean luatex 0.30.0)
in the future I think we should suggest TUG to distribute opentype
version of the font (including converting the math glyphs into
opentype math table).

This is because the math encoding files have not been completely extended
to mkiv yet. We are in the process of adding encoding information for all
unicode math symbols. \midintop is not a unicode character, and we need to
figure out how to represent non-unicode characters in the private areas of

Short update on the files people sent me:

 * the otf file is identical,

It seems that somehow, when the tmc is read in, context (i.e. luatex)
misinterprets the numeric values in the bytecode completely, resulting
in ridiculous values for character widths, heights, depths etc.

I am afraid I still have no idea why this happens.

Oops dumb question on my part... did not realise that texexec used pdfTeX by
default and context uses luaTeX.

I got the same error so I tried texexec instead of context and it seems to
work fine. How different is context from texexec?

Thanks, got them. More later, but at first glance the tma does not look
all that weird.

I can almost certainly reproduce this, I see an uninitialized variable
in valgrind. More about this later, but this is *not* the same as
Fengnan's problem.

This problem happens in the backend when the pdf resources are output,
while his problem occurs much earlier in the process, during the
actual typesetting.

Hi, Jonathan:

Thanks for the analysis! Now I replace the trk with TRK, and xetex
output is right.

The input file is not right. here is the right one: luatex do not
enable kerning and ligatures by default, users should specify them or
just using the "default" feature. Sorry for the noise.

Thanks! So I think we should support lowercase code for xetex as well
for api consistency?
LuaTeX/MKIV use lowercase labels.

Then we can get similar output using the same tex file.

When trk is replaced by TRK it works OK in XeTeX.

LuaTeX (ConTeXt with LuaTeX support) is a bit broken at the moment -
the example doesn't compile here, so it's difficult to say anything.

It appears to be some multiplatform bug, not only on windows, but
happens on new ConTeXt installations only. That's probably up to Hans
to fix, but LuaTeX is not supposed to crash either.

I don't know how the ConTeXt+XeTeX font setup works, but I notice
"language=trk" in your file. OpenType language tags are all-uppercase,
so I would have expected this to be "language=TRK". If the proper
language system isn't specified, you will get the default behavior,
which includes the "fi" ligatures.

In the LuaTeX case, I don't think *any* ligatures are enabled by
default, so the language is irrelevant; notice that there's no "ff"
ligature in your output either, even though this should be expected.
