$ = \letterdollar
You can also replace
\directlua{tex.print(...)}
with
\ctxlua{context(...)}
or
\cldcontext{...}

Also I tried to no avail
\begingroup\catcode`\%=12\relax\directlua{tex.print(string.match(“This is a
string","%s%a$"))}\endgroup
