RE: SQL and iSCSI issue

2009-05-11 Thread Joseph L. Casale
I'd say you are at the limit for GigE, not knowing anything about
your target, increasing your throughput by bonding/teaming would
probably give you the best bang for your effort.

IIRC, W2k8 always aligns IO, but in tests I did it showed the
improvement to vary from immeasurable to noticeable.

Can't comment on the extents...

Subject: SQL and iSCSI issue

Guys,

I need an opinion. Here's the situation:

I have a Windows 2008 Enterprise box running SQL 2008 in a dev
environment. We host the database on an IBM DS3300 iSCSI san. We
have a database, approx 102GB, on one of the SAN's LUNs (a copy of our
production stuff), which is on a raid 10, 10 drives (15k, SAS).

When we run a report on this server, it takes over 66 seconds to run.
On the production server (granted, more hardware plus db is hosted on
an expensive Fiber EMC SAN), the same report only takes 5-10 seconds.

Looking at some perfmon stats, it seems the disk is the issue. For
instance, for the SQLServer:Wait stats, the Page IO latch waits spike
up to ~950 waits per second, with the other stats staying at 0
(waiting on disk IO). On the QliSCSI Adapter Stats (QLogic HBAs), my
Read Bytes per second hits ~118 million, or 118 MBps. Avg Read Queue
Length hits ~200, % Disk Read Time/Disk Time hits ~24,000. I'm
getting 1800 IOPS.

>From what I can tell, we're saturating the iSCSI link here. I'm on a
gigabit switch, so if I took 1000 Mbps/8 = 125 MBps. Overhead/other
stuff is using the SAN, 118 MBps would pretty much be a limit here.
Am I wrong in my thinking? Is there something else I should be
looking at?

Now, during my research I came across a recommendation to format the
NTFS drive the DB is on have an allocation size of 64KB to match the
extents. Currently I'm at the default 4KB. Would this make much of a
difference?

I wanted to run this by some people who know more than I before I talk
to the bosses. Thanks for all your help.

I'd like something that starts at the very beginning and walks you
through how it works, etc. Do you actually publish apps, etc., or is it
just a way of connecting to a server, using RDP from outside the

OK Blackberry folks, those who have upgraded to BES 5...

1. What does it gain over 4.1.6 (I believe that's what had been current)?

2. Any problems with installation?

3. Does it use more or less server resources (or stay about the same)?

We are a Lotus Notes shop, and I understand that can have performance, etc
"experiences" vs the Exchange version of BES.

Thanks!

2009-05-11 Thread Eric Woodford
We have it installed in the lab. Biggest changes that we are loving here...

   - Blackberry manager is a web page, instead of an application to be
installed. No need for Exchange System Manager to be installed, it uses the
   MAPICDO package for connectivity.
   - You can create new admin roles than the predefined.
   - Groups can have admin roles assigned to them. We hope to farm out the
device setup and configuration to each remote admin.
   - Built in redundancy, still testing this one.

RE: OT - Copier Reliability

2009-05-11 Thread Mike Gill
We have the Xerox 7665 MFP and I love it. The first one we got was a dud
unfortunately but they sent a new unit and it's been gravy. It scans (pdf,
jpg, tiff, etc) to SMB shares, but we use the scan-to-email feature more. I
set it up to get email addresses from our DC via LDAP. So any person or
group on the server becomes available to the copier for a destination. We
use the Xerox Simple Accounting which took some trial and error to
understand, but it works nicely now. There is some nice customizations in
the driver properties to make accounting less painful to the users on the
printing side. Xerox charges 1 click for 11x17, which some vendors charge 2
clicks. Our Xerox rep doesn't have price-of-doing-business increases on the
maintenance for the duration of the lease either. The last two shops we used
charge between $50 to $80 more per month by the end of the lease.

Hi folks.  I was looking at a laptop and had many good comments from this list

Anyway, I went with a Dell Studio 15 from Costco.
The price was as good as or better than what I got with our company's Dell
Employee discount and some other prices I found.
It's an Intel Core Dou T6400 with 4 gig of RAM, a 500 gig drive and the other

Regulard 5 cell battery.

It came with Vista Home Pro with SP1.

After I bought it, I started to think about Windows 7 coming out.  So I'm
wondering if I should have just waited for Windows 7 to release and get one
with that on it.  I don't know the manufacturer's policy about provding a
Windows 7 update if you purchased within the last 6 months or something.

Thoughts?

RE: OT - Copier Reliability

2009-05-11 Thread Bob Fronk
Copiers and weed-eaters should be outlawed. Neither work for very long and
always break when you really need them.

I have not had good luck with any copier regardless of manufacturer. Canons do
seem to have a little better reliability.

+1 for canon. Our company uses them in all our offices. We have about 70 of
them under lease. Highly suggest you get the fiery's with them. Have had bad

Thanks!

You may need to place x64 bit drivers on the print server then try an push
the printers by GPO.

RE: OT - Copier Reliability

2009-05-11 Thread N Parr
Most of my experience is with Canon, HP, and (Lanier, Ricoh, Gestetner
which are all the same manufacture). Maybe newer models have improved
but Canon has always has had the fastest interface. The last Ricoh we
had was very laggy and I made our vendor replace it with a Canon after a
year. Hardware performance is probably the most important aspect of a
copier purchase. The ability for your vendor to support you quickly is
a very close second. No matter what brand you use there will always be
problems and if their response time is poor everyone will hate the
hardware you bought no matter what it is.

Terminal Server 2008 Printing

2009-05-11 Thread Tom Miller
Hi Folks:

Anyone have suggestions for a method to print in Terminal Services 2008, not
using "desktop experience"? Our enterprise application (Great Plains, an MS
product no less) does not currently support desktop experience printing.

My terminal servers are 64-bit, desktops are standard 32-bit XP.

I've tried to create fake printers and put then in a GPO to push to the
terminal servers, so then I could just delete the printers but keep the drivers
on the servers. The printers didn't push to the servers. The print server is
also 2008 but 32-bit. So I am wondering if there are

I have file and print services installed on the Terminal Servers as well, but I
cannot add those servers to just add printers that way either. When I attempt
to do that, I get the error

"Network printer installation wizard can not be launched. Make sure that you
have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the
network."

Am I making this more difficult than it needs to be? Clarification appreciated.
