I have used the Radio Shack USB->Serial adapters twice. One time it worked,
the other it didn't. Don't know if I got a bad unit or what. YMMV.

I was in a pinch about a year ago. I live in Richmond, VA, which does not
have any Fry's-like stores where you can pick and choose non-mainstream
stuff like you're looking for.

I needed something immediately (either a different, older laptop, or
whatever USB <--> serial cable I could find) so I went to Radio Shack and
paid a ridiculous sum for the single cable they had available.

The good news is that it has worked flawlessly on Win7 x64 without a hitch,
and it's now a constant companion in my laptop bag. It is also pretty long
at something like 4 or 5 feet, which has helped in a few space-constrained
situations.

RE: OT advice, please. Received a verbal job offer....

2011-01-21 Thread Free, Bob
I think that is good advice. We are hiring and doing some phone screenings
today to see who we want to bring in for an interview, one fellow did just as
you suggested and sent a very nice, professional email to the recruiter we are
working with right after the call today, the recruiter forwarded the email to
my boss and I the tenor of it left a very favorable impression...

Don't 'ask' for an update. Drop them an professional email expressing your
continued interest in the position and ask them if they require any more
information or clarification from you. They will know you want an update on
their progress, but you will be asking for it politely and letting them know
you are still keen on the position.

Last WednesdayI accepted but asked if they could get me more time off (i
have a LOT where I am). They asked for a few days to see if they could work it
out with upper mgmt. It has been more than a week. Should I wait a few more
days or should I ask them for an update? I've worked with this company as a
customer for a number of years, but not with this individual.

Thanks.

Yes, probably.

I wouldn't say that I'm stressed, just ready to move on. My present position
has simply run its course.

RE: All WSUS Clients reporting IP of ISA Server

2011-01-21 Thread Joseph L. Casale
Forget about what the gp says, there are so many ways this setting can get
stuck, don't even get me ranting...
Do a network trace, and see for certain, I don't use isa but I presume you can
turn up some logging and search for the wsus server, it shouldn't be in its

Clients are updating and reporting properly, they're just not reporting the
correct IP address. This started after a rebuild of the server hosting WSUS,
and I can't find what setting I need to modify to get them to report properly.
Google-fu has been thwarted - the results I've found don't apply.

The WSUS server & all clients are behind the ISA server.
All clients are on the same subnet.
It's a mix of nearly all current OS's.

LMK what other info you need. I really appreciate the help, guys.

Don't 'ask' for an update. Drop them an professional email expressing your
continued interest in the position and ask them if they require any more
information or clarification from you. They will know you want an update on
their progress, but you will be asking for it politely and letting them know
you are still keen on the position.

Subject: OT advice, please. Received a verbal job offer

Last WednesdayI accepted but asked if they could get me more time
off (i have a LOT where I am). They asked for a few days to see if they
could work it out with upper mgmt. It has been more than a week. Should
I wait a few more days or should I ask them for an update? I've worked
with this company as a customer for a number of years, but not with this
individual.

Thanks.

My Mark R. story.

I attended a Mark R. & David S. pre TechEd event back in 2004. At TechEd
2006 I met Mark R. waiting for a shuttle bus. I mentioned that I had attended
his mind dumbing 6 hour long crash dump analysis class at TechEd 2004. Mark
asked a lot of questions about what I thought about the class, him, David,
their presentation style, class materials, what I thought, what did I learn,
etc, etc. Instead of a "umm, thanks for attending" response, I got to spend
probably close to 10 minutes with him because, I felt, he was deeply interested
in seeing if he/they could have done a better job. Nice.

RE: Folder permissions/attributes issue

2011-01-21 Thread Tom Miller
If I log on with an admin account, I see the root i: folder, and three
of the four shares. The DATA share is what I cannot see, but can map
to.

The odd thing is that in the Share and Storage Management utility it
appears to be configured identically to my other campus file server, and
there is no visibility issue with that server's share.

I didn't even realize this until recently, when my backup guy told me
about it. So it may have been setup this way since I created the share.
My goal was to prevent departments from seeing other departments
folders (data share has all department folders under it, each assigned
perms based on group). The root DATA share perms have the server's
local administrators group having full control, of which domain admins
is a member. UAC is enabled, so I'm guessing this might be the issue.
Not sure why.

Tom

>>> Miller Bonnie L.  1/21/2011 12:05 PM
>>>

If you use explorer and type in I:\Data, do you get there?

Sounds like it could be UAC related. If you’re not logged on with an
admin account on the server, you might not see it at all. If you are
logged on with an admin account, you are still going to get prompted to
elevate (not enough permissions w/out elevation) when you are able to
open the i:\data folder. If this is the problem, you could add a group
with read/modify permission that includes your admin account, but is not
one of the default “administrators” or “domain admins” groups.
Or, do you mean the folder has suddenly gained the hidden attribute,
which you should be able to see if you set your explorer view to show
all hidden items?

Subject: Folder permissions/attributes issue

Hi Folks,

I have several large file and print 2008 servers here. Each has an
"i:\" drive that has a number of shares under it such as APPS and DATA.
The DATA share is the problem on one of the servers. When I log into it,
I cannot see it under i:\. But I can map a drive just fine. The perms
are the same at the root of the drive and at the DATA share level:

Shareing | Advanced, enable access-based enumeration

Share permissions: everyone and administrators have full controle

NTFS permissions (inhereted permissions removed):
CO, , subfolders and files: full
Auth users, this folder, subfoler, files: traverse and list
SYSTEM, same as CO with this folder added
Administrators, same as SYSTEM

Under data we have folder for each department. For each folder I grant
the permissions to the departments' respective security groups.

I don't recall setting DATA to hidden. Suggestions on favorite tools
to dig into this?

Tom

RE: Folder permissions/attributes issue

2011-01-21 Thread Miller Bonnie L .
If you use explorer and type in I:\Data, do you get there?

Sounds like it could be UAC related. If you're not logged on with an admin
account on the server, you might not see it at all. If you are logged on with
an admin account, you are still going to get prompted to elevate (not enough
permissions w/out elevation) when you are able to open the i:\data folder. If
this is the problem, you could add a group with read/modify permission that
includes your admin account, but is not one of the default "administrators" or
"domain admins" groups.
Or, do you mean the folder has suddenly gained the hidden attribute, which you
should be able to see if you set your explorer view to show all hidden items?

Hi Folks,

I have several large file and print 2008 servers here. Each has an "i:\" drive
that has a number of shares under it such as APPS and DATA. The DATA share is
the problem on one of the servers. When I log into it, I cannot see it under
i:\. But I can map a drive just fine. The perms are the same at the root of
the drive and at the DATA share level:

Shareing | Advanced, enable access-based enumeration

Share permissions: everyone and administrators have full controle

NTFS permissions (inhereted permissions removed):
CO, , subfolders and files: full
Auth users, this folder, subfoler, files: traverse and list
SYSTEM, same as CO with this folder added
Administrators, same as SYSTEM

Under data we have folder for each department. For each folder I grant the
permissions to the departments' respective security groups.

I don't recall setting DATA to hidden. Suggestions on favorite tools to dig
into this?

Re: IIS SMTP Queue Viewer?

2011-01-21 Thread Steven Peck
If you have any system management monitoring tools there is a queue size
counter available to monitor. As the queue is merely a directory on the
server I had a batch file that would check the directory and do some routine
fixes due to our stupid custom disclaimer script blowing up occasionally.

If you don't have any monitoring tools to leverage you could maybe do a
PowerShell script that would grab the performance counter and do a count on
the number of items in the folder.

Subject: A OneNote device

Hi

I want a device on which to use OneNote in meetings. Only needs to do
that and browsing the web. Nothing more. So clearly Windows is a must.

There's an iPad/iPhone app that allows you to read and make basic
changes to a onenote file but it's early days so I'm ruling out that at
the moment.

Other than a Tablet PC can anyone recommend any other solution? There's
one or two Atom based tablet out that claim to run Windows but the
reviews are shocking.

Anyone doing the same with something interesting and want to share their
results and thoughts?

Actually just for iPhone and iPod Touch. You CAN install it on an iPad
but it won't look very good.

RE: All WSUS Clients reporting IP of ISA Server

2011-01-21 Thread Joseph L. Casale
Heh, your clients access the web via isa, isa handles requests on behalf of
clients, bypass isa for local requests?

Subject: All WSUS Clients reporting IP of ISA Server

Clients are updating and reporting properly, they're just not reporting the
correct IP address. This started after a rebuild of the server hosting WSUS,
and I can't find what setting I need to modify to get them to report properly.
Google-fu has been thwarted - the results I've found don't apply.

The WSUS server & all clients are behind the ISA server.
All clients are on the same subnet.
It's a mix of nearly all current OS's.

LMK what other info you need. I really appreciate the help, guys.

My Mark R.

Nice.

RE: Windows SysInternals: ListDLLs v3.0 & Handle v3.43

2011-01-21 Thread Ziots, Edward
I agree, I remember a few Tech Ed's ago when he was showing some of the
coding he was doing for 64bit versions of the tools set, and it caused
his presentation laptop ( X64 XP to blue screen) basically he laughed it
off in the process of speaking to like 1,200 people in a large
auditorium in at the Convention Center in Orlando Flordia.

As an extra treat, he basically did a Crash dump analysis of his own
dump with the tools and found out by the end of the presentation what
was the root cause of the blue screen.

Honestly, Mark is a class-act a really nice guy and wicked smart...

RE: Background Checks and Drug Test

Also remember that if you don't sign an authorization and release form,
allowing them to run the background check, then they can't run it.

What State do you live in?

You can request a copy of your background check and drug test. Also, would
suggest to check your credit history yearly to make sure that there isn't
anything fishy on there. You can go here -
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp and get a report yearly for
free (unlike the others that claim to be free and will charge you)

As others have mentioned here, I would look somewhere else. Companies will
cover the cost of the background checks and drug tests, this shouldn't come out
of your pocket.

drug results. What if it came back with a false positive? How would I know?

Also, what if the background check has false information on it? What if someone
stole my identity and I did not know about it? I had that happen to me. I was
trying to get a contract job a Fort Knox, and they did a credit check on me and
wanted to know when I lived in Florida. I have never lived in Florida. At that
point they said I should contact one of the credit reporting agencies to verify
my information. That is when I found out someone had stole my identity and
charged up over $30K in medical expenses. You know how hard it is to let the
company know that you are not the person they are trying to collect their
charges from? I had to sign at least three affidavits stating that I was not
the person who accrued those charges and that I never lived in Florida. Took
two months to get this all straightened out.

Seriously, it is not just the $50 or so dollars. It is the attitude that some
of the recruiting companies get the idea that, "Hey, we can save money by
passing these costs on the the prospective contractor." But this is before I
even have accepted a contract. I know, the paperwork says that they will deduct
those charges from the first paycheck, but I haven't even found out where the
job is at, let alone what the payrate is. And by the way this recruiter
sounded, when I talked to him, he didn't give me the payrate, or whether or not
I was accepted by their client. Just sounded like he wanted to get a whole pool
of people to accept this job/contract and then fill in the blanks, later.

Subject: OT: Background Checks and Drug Test

To all,

I am looking at taking a contract position. I am currently talking to the
contracting rep about this position. He wants me to fill out some online forms,
standard stuff, but I am concerned about one of the forms.

This form is a release for a Background Check and Drug Screening. Now, I don't
mind the background check or the drug test. But what kinda irks me is that they
want to charge $10 for the Drug Test and $25 for the Background Check. What the
form basically says, is, that I am giving the contracting firm to deduct those
amounts from my first paycheck. I am also hesitant in filling out any forms for
them, as they haven't told me what the payrate is on this position.

I thought all Background Checks and Drug Test charges where the responsibility
of the contracting company?

What are your thoughts on this?

I attended a Mark R. & David S. pre TechEd event back in 2004. At

attended his mind dumbing 6 hour long crash dump analysis class at
TechEd 2004. Mark asked a lot of questions about what I thought about
the class, him, David, their presentation style, class materials, what I
thought, what did I learn, etc, etc. Instead of a "umm, thanks for
attending" response, I got to spend probably close to 10 minutes with
him because, I felt, he was deeply interested in seeing if he/they could
