What CRL and OCSP fields are on the cert?

Have you tried browsing to those URLs from the server?

That shouldn't be a problem. We use GoDaddy certs all the time for all kinds
of things including Exchange.

This may be way off base, but are the GoDaddy intermediate certs installed?

I've also seen goofy stuff like this when the computer in question could not
access the Internet to download the CRL because of some content filtering
solution. In my SonicWall content filtering environment, I've fixed this by
allowing the computer to access the GoDaddy CRL without identifying a logged in
user. Is there any content filtering in place, or something that might be
hindering http/s traffic out to the Internet by the server?

Lots and lots on this in various forums. They all boil down to the same thing
as cited in the article - set the proxy server in winhttp. There is no proxy
server in this environment. The machine has direct access.

I've done many different things trying to clear this including clearing the

Subject: Backup software

Hi
Looking to change our backup software and are open to recommendations

Our servers are a range of Windows 2000 2003 with Exchange 2003 and a couple of
version of Microsoft Sql server 2000 and 2005 We were looking at Symantec
backup exec These machine will have a dedicated backup server and an lto5 tape
drive

We will backup to disk and then to tape (we have a requirement for an off site
tape backup so this must remain)

The backup will easily fit on 1 lto 5 tape and with data volumes this should be
ok for 2-3 years

HOWEVER
We also have 2 IBM AIX servers running version 4.3.3 and version 5.1 These will
backup again to a dedicated server with an ultrium 5 tape drive The IBM servers
cant be upgraded!

Looking for a "supported" solution

We looked at backupexec and netbackup however only Older an now none supported
version will work with our Aix versions the new version "may"
work but would be unsupported! (no good for us) Also they are charging quite a
high premium for backing up to tape

Suggestions are welcome especially first hand experiences

If any software is available that will do the whole thing (backup windows and
Aix) this would be an advantage and of course keep down the costs

Currently we are using OPENBACKUP now unsupported and are looking at ARKEIA (a
spin-off of openbackup or parallel version)

Yes, much smaller environments, 99% of my experience is systems supporting
under 750 users - sorry I should have clarified that up front. The only time
I've supported more than that was when years ago when my only job was to patch
1600+ servers worldwide, that was a challenge!

I think you might be talking about small(er) environments then.

A DR typically involves failing over controller infrastructure for firewalls,
NIPS, auditing software, updating load balancers, usually lots of DNS entries
etc. People have to be able to connect to the SAN management software to up the
LUNS at the target DC etc. Lots of steps have to happen before clients need to
worry about DHCP.

In a larger environment, the DC command center will be a lot more than 1 PC -
my last project had ~50 per DC. In a DR, we will have a couple of hundred
people cycling through (I'm not involved in BCP design directly, so I'm not
sure of the details). Those stations need to be static. And in a larger org,
you'll find lots of other odd corner cases where you need static as well (to
get around a dependency on DHCP, or network or whatever)

Cheers

In those cases I manually set the IP once I realize the station isn't getting
an IP addresses, and sometimes I remember to flip it back to DHCP right away,
sometimes it's weeks later :). If trying to do this remote yeah, it could be a
reason to keep a station static. Of course that makes it prime to be the one
station you can't get to if a change ever does happen to a network (BTDT!).

In my fairly limited experience (I have 17 years' experience, but only about 7
different Windows networks over the years) as long as the DC's / DHCP/VM Host
servers are static, in a DR situation that's enough because if systems aren't
getting DHCP then you're not ready for the next steps.

I think you'll find it more cost effective to choose one solution per
platform, than attempt to find a solution that will support both platforms
(and well not do so equally in any event).

Also, what budget are you looking at for this project?

2012-08-02 Thread Andrew S. Baker
You can set an alternate IP on the host that will take effect if no DHCP
server is found.

Backup software

2012-08-02 Thread Nigel Parker
Hi
Looking to change our backup software and are open to recommendations

Our servers are a range of Windows 2000 2003 with Exchange 2003 and a
couple of version of Microsoft Sql server 2000 and 2005
We were looking at Symantec backup exec
These machine will have a dedicated backup server and an lto5 tape drive

We will backup to disk and then to tape (we have a requirement for an
off site tape backup so this must remain)

The backup will easily fit on 1 lto 5 tape and with data volumes this
should be ok for 2-3 years

HOWEVER
We also have 2 IBM AIX servers running version 4.3.3 and version 5.1
These will backup again to a dedicated server with an ultrium 5 tape
drive
The IBM servers cant be upgraded!

Looking for a "supported" solution

We looked at backupexec and netbackup however only Older an now none
supported version will work with our Aix versions the new version "may"
work but would be unsupported! (no good for us)
Also they are charging quite a high premium for backing up to tape

Suggestions are welcome especially first hand experiences

If any software is available that will do the whole thing (backup
windows and Aix) this would be an advantage and of course keep down the
costs

Currently we are using OPENBACKUP now unsupported and are looking at
ARKEIA (a spin-off of openbackup or parallel version)
