is small, about 20 students but will grow by January to a full offering.
 She's seen a proposal by zendesk.com http://zendesk.com/ , but wondering
if any of you knew of
an Open Source/Free Helpdesk Software with Knowledgebase/FAQ capability ?
They'll have both Mac and Windows clients, and the FAQ/Knowledgebase
 should
be able to grow with general info, not just on the online learning Moodle
tool, and possibly link to publisher's own KB too ( Apple, Microsoft, etc)

Since there is a wonderful breadth of experience here, I wondered if
 anyone
could share their insight on what worked very well for them, or what to
 run
away from without looking back, versus just a google search on products
 spec.

 Thanks

We are looking at the possibility of having a Virtualised environment
(although like anything else at the moment cost is an overriding issue).
As part of a move away from the traditional client/server model, we have
a Terminal Server Farm (currently 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers) configured
identically with a Session Broker (again Windows 2008 R2 VM) Server to
direct users to an appropriate server for the login process.

Some of our older PC's have now started to exhibit signs of failing. So
rather than replacing like for like, we were wondering if we could
replace the PC's with a form of Thin Client. I must stress that we do
not have a full blown Virtualised Infrastructure in place - although my
hope is to eventually go down that route. Therefore are there any
recommendations for a Thin Client that would allow users to connect to
our current Terminal Services Farm as well as being able to be used in a
full blown VDI scenario if we decide to go down that route?

We are looking at the possibility of having a Virtualised environment
(although like anything else at the moment cost is an overriding issue).
As part of a move away from the traditional client/server model, we have a
Terminal Server Farm (currently 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers) configured
identically with a Session Broker (again Windows 2008 R2 VM) Server to
direct users to an appropriate server for the login process.

Some of our older PC’s have now started to exhibit signs of failing. So
rather than replacing like for like, we were wondering if we could replace
the PC’s with a form of Thin Client. I must stress that we do not have a
full blown Virtualised Infrastructure in place – although my hope is to
eventually go down that route. Therefore are there any recommendations for
a Thin Client that would allow users to connect to our current Terminal
Services Farm as well as being able to be used in a full blown VDI
scenario if we decide to go down that route?

Hi Guys,
Got a call today to say that one particular website won't load from a user.

Was working fine yesterday. It's their official website and they use word press

It works on other networks without an issue. Router was re-booted and no

Cannot get to via IP address either. Can ping it fine.

Any ideas?

RE: Thin Client Recommendations

Subject: Thin Client Recommendations

We are looking at the possibility of having a Virtualised environment (although
like anything else at the moment cost is an overriding issue). As part of a
move away from the traditional client/server model, we have a Terminal Server
Farm (currently 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers) configured identically with a
Session Broker (again Windows 2008 R2 VM) Server to direct users to an
appropriate server for the login process.

Some of our older PC's have now started to exhibit signs of failing. So rather
than replacing like for like, we were wondering if we could replace the PC's
with a form of Thin Client. I must stress that we do not have a full blown
Virtualised Infrastructure in place - although my hope is to eventually go down
that route. Therefore are there any recommendations for a Thin Client that
would allow users to connect to our current Terminal Services Farm as well as
being able to be used in a full blown VDI scenario if we decide to go down that
route?

Virtualised Infrastructure in place - although my hope is to eventually go down
that route. Therefore are there any recommendations for a Thin Client that
would allow users to connect to our current Terminal Services Farm as well as
being able to be used in a full blown VDI scenario if we decide to go down that
route?

Rab.

Re: Weird issue

2012-08-08 Thread Kurt Buff
Bring a known clean laptop with you - one that gets to the web site
from your office or home, and make sure you have wireshark installed.

Plug it in at the affected office. Fire up wireshark then try the web
site. If it comes up, look to the machines that are affected as I
mentioned. If it doesn't, review the wireshark trace to see if it's a
DNS issue, or it it's a filtering issue of some sort.

You can do similar diagnostics without wireshark, using nslookup/dig
and ping and telnet (telnet website.example.com 80), but there's
nothing like a good packet capture tool to really let you know what's
happening.

Our solution will be in house, our VOIP traffic between offices will be going
through a private point to point T1. We want to manage typical phone system
changes, adds, moves, changes in the attendant, adding new extensions, VM's
etc. The trunking and more complex stuff we will leave to our vendor: I do
believe I have found a good one, our current vendor is Blackbox who also sells
ShoreTel but I do not believe we will be going with them. Also, I forgot to
mention in my first post, our facilities are medical clinics. One thought is
this has been business continuity, we are in hurricane country, if one of our
offices is destroyed we want to be able to operate each system independently if
needed. I worry a bit about latency issues going across the Internet with
hosted solutions and also privacy which is why I want a T1 dedicated so our
interoffice calls are not going across the Internet even though we have 10Mb
Ethernet at each location.

Heh guys,

Looking for some recommendations on a phone system. We are about to replace our
current Inter-Tel system with something new. We have about 150 phones at two
sites. We (the IT staff) manage most of the current phone system. For our new
system I'm looking for something that's easier for IT staff to manage and that
has better backup functionality of the system database and VM and some
redundancy so that if one site goes down the other is still operational. So far
everything, based on my own research, has steered me towards Shore-Tel but I
was wondering if their where others that were out there that maybe as good or
better.

Thanks,

James

involved with that part of the org). One of RT's big selling points
at the time was it could be done entirely with email as the UI, if one
so desired.

The two big ones in this space are Request Tracker
(http://bestpractical.com/rt/) and OTRS (http://www.otrs.com/). The later
is used by the Wikipedia people.

BTW - don't know if it makes any difference to you, but RT does have a
book published on it - it's referenced on the page at
http://bestpractical.com, the home of RT. Of course, the book was
published in 2005, so it's a bit dated, I'm sure, but if I were going
into a place with no ticketing system, RT is what I'd start.with.

This might be an option; although they don't officially support Safari. They
say Safari users report good results. Might be worth testing.

RE: Weird issue

2012-08-08 Thread Ken Schaefer
I would work your way systemically up the stack from lowest to highest:

a) tracert from the two machines at the site (the affected and non affected
machines). Is the routing path the same for both machines? Is the name
resolving correctly? This can help eliminate DNS and routing issues.
b) Next, eliminate the browser as a problem: use telnet.exe on the two
machines, and verify that a connection to port 80 on the server can be
established. This can also help eliminate a FW or other oddity that might be
blocking a connection.
c) verify the server is responding, by issuing a GET request in the telnet
window. If the server is responding, check the web server logs on the server to
see what an expected log file entry looks like
d) examine the browser configuration: is a proxy server, or something else odd,
configured in the browser? If you install another browser, do you have an issue?
e) after making a request in the browser, see if the request is making it to
the server: anything in httperr.log logfile? Anything in the IIS logfile?
Anything in eth Windows Event Log?

Cheers
Ken

yes...the site works fine outside the office on all other client machines...so
the site looks ok.

Internally, it does not work on any client machines, including the server. I
can ping the site via IP and by its full url from the server.

Tracert shows no errors and makes it all the way to the site.

I'm going over there tomorrow, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do now..

If it works for other networks, that means it works for various client
machines, correct?

If it doesn't work for one user, focus on that user - clean browser cache,
check plugins/addons, etc.

Cannot get to via IP address either. Can ping it fine.

 Any ideas?

Windows 2003 SP2 server. Can’t get to it from the server either.
