Ah, teaching.

I've done that.

I actually enjoy it, but it is also tiring.

ECC is not an intrinsically bad thing. In large environments it is a
requirement.

Even with ECC, look how human error has caused issues with Microsoft's online
services, Google's online services, etc.

It could be far worse.

However, there is no reason for it to take as long as has been reported in this
thread for a typical change. In my large environments, ECC items are classified
as to potential impact and have OLAs (Operational Level Agreements) that define
how quickly they must be resolved or escalated based on the potential and OLA.

This is all part of Operational Maturity (ITIL). And if a company is having
issues with this, I will be happy to work with them and assist in the
correction of their challenges, all in accordance with ITIL and industry best
practices.

RE: Slightly OT: RE: Migrate DHCP from 2003 to 2008 R2

2013-02-20 Thread Webster
One thing I failed to mention is a major factor in getting rid of the Bluecat
devices. The devices had a strong tendency to lockup and or stop accepting
requests during periods of high usage. Since the devices could not be pinged
or gotten into by http/https or telnet, an emergency change request had to be
done. Once it went thru the 3 levels of change control, someone had to call
the data center to have the devices powered off and back on.

Because of the many hundreds of zones and because they were standard zones (not
AD Integrated) it took almost one month of effort to get off those devices.
There was no command or utility to get multiple zone transfers so it was one
zone at a time. I also remember something about it wouldn’t transfer all the
records in a zone because of the way the DNS records were handled internally
and the records had to be manually edited. Sorry, not the DNS records
themselves, the zone files that were created by the Bluecats. They were not a
standard zone file and Windows couldn’t (wouldn’t) import them so the zone
files had to be manually edited. Cricket Liu would have been cursing those
Bluecat zones.

Overall it was a major royal PITA and they were (are) glad to be off those
devices. The customer has had zero issues since moving to AD Integrated DNS
zones and Windows DHCP. And I think the Windows team is now making the network
infrastructure team go through change control every time they need something
done in DHCP or DNS (payback is hell you know).

Thanks

From: Webster [mailto:webs...@carlwebster.com]
Subject: RE: Slightly OT: RE: Migrate DHCP from 2003 to 2008 R2

The company I just helped move their DHCP and DNS stuff from the appliances did
it because appliances are under the control of the network infrastructure team.
Any time a DNS record or DHCP reservation was needed, a change control form
had to be submitted and go thru three layers of review processes and then wait
for a scheduled monthly maintenance window. When you are implementing Citrix
PVS, that is a burdensome process.

Thanks

Well, technically speaking, a lot of the license agreements do. For
example, the license agreement for Microsoft SQL Server says you can't
publish reviews or commentary without Microsoft's permission.

I am unsure of the legality of such terms.

RE: Slightly OT: RE: Migrate DHCP from 2003 to 2008 R2

2013-02-20 Thread Webster
The company I just helped move their DHCP and DNS stuff from the appliances did
it because appliances are under the control of the network infrastructure team.
Any time a DNS record or DHCP reservation was needed, a change control form
had to be submitted and go thru three layers of review processes and then wait
for a scheduled monthly maintenance window. When you are implementing Citrix
PVS, that is a burdensome process.

Thanks

Security Engineering -- The Book

‘I'm incredibly impressed that one person could produce such a thorough
coverage. Moreover, you make the stuff easy and enjoyable to read. I find it
just as entertaining - and far more useful - than novels (and my normal science
fiction). When I first got it in the mail, I said to myself "I'm never going to
read all of that." But once I started reading I just kept going and going.
Fantastic: well done.
Now, let's hope that all those in charge of security for information technology
will also read the book and heed the lessons.’ Don Norman

‘The book that you MUST READ RIGHT NOW is the second edition of Ross Anderson's
Security Engineering book. Ross did a complete pass on his classic tome and
somehow made it even better...’ Gary McGraw

‘It's beautiful. This is the best book on the topic there is’
Bruce Schneier

All chapters from the second edition now available free online!

When I wrote the first edition, we put the chapters online free after four
years and found that this boosted sales of the paper edition.
People would find a useful chapter online and then buy the book to have it as a
reference. Wiley and I agreed to do the same with the second edition, and now,
four years after publication, I am putting all the chapters online for free.
Enjoy them – and I hope you'll buy the paper version to have as a conveient
shelf reference:

Buy from Amazon.com
Buy from Wiley
Buy from Amazon.co.uk (Kindle version)

Here are the errata for the second edition, and here's a page of notes and
links concerning relevant topics that I've come across since publication.

Supplementary materials: If you're a college professor thinking of using my
book in class, note that we use my book in three courses at
Cambridge:

* the first part in second-year Introduction to Security (course
  material and past exam questions)

* the second in third-year Security (course material and questions), and

* the third part in our second-year Software Engineering (course,
  questions and still more questions).

I hope you find these useful. You're welcome to use and adapt any of my slides
if you wish under this Creative Commons license. Also, if you're an instructor
at an accredited institution, you can request an evaluation copy via Wiley's
website.

Netsh works great, but one thing not mentioned in the KB is you may get strange
errors if you are missing any options on the new server. If you've added
special options for things, such as IP phones, make sure to pre-add them on
your new server before importing your scopes.

Don't say that, Web!

We've migrated 90% of our locations over so far for DHCP with no huge issues.
Primary DNS is still handled by Windows. That switchover is next.

2013-02-20 Thread Webster
I just helped move a company from Bluecat DHCP devices to Server 2008 R2 DHCP!
They hated the Bluecat devices and they were a real PITA to get zone data out
of.

Thanks

Not at all. I got no help, permission or advice from Citrix on my XenApp 5

Re: Books about software

2013-02-20 Thread Steven Peck
You don't. Nothing says you have to talk to a vender or a developer or an
engineer about a piece of software to write a book about it.

Depending on your goal, subject, desire however, it may be very wise to
engage with the vender, senior members of the community, etc. for
information, resources and feedback on a book. You may also get access to
software or maybe internal engineers/support you wouldn't have otherwise
had access to if you properly engage them.

There are 'testing companies' out there that provide technical question
sets for employers and they don't generally engage with Microsoft but with
independent contractors (note, I know because I've written such
questions). Not that different then book writing.

There are many books written by people that do not engage with any of the
above out there. Some are more successful then others. So, define your
goals and objectives, look at your resources and then do what seems the
best fit to accomplish them. Hopefully the company is open to engaging
with individuals, figuring out who in a company to talk to would be part of
the challenge.

Books about software

2013-02-20 Thread kz20fl
If you want to write a book about a particular piece of software, am I right in
assuming you need to engage the vendor to some degree? I'm a complete newcomer
to this sort of thing so any and all advice is gratefully appreciated.

TIA,

JRR

RE: Migrate DHCP from 2003 to 2008 R2

2013-02-20 Thread Miller Bonnie L .
Netsh works great, but one thing not mentioned in the KB is you may get strange
errors if you are missing any options on the new server. If you've added
special options for things, such as IP phones, make sure to pre-add them on
your new server before importing your scopes.
