need to go to the Local Security Settings I believe.  We still use NT4 for the domain, but on my Win2000 Pro box
it is under Admin ToolsàLocal Security PolicyàLocal PoliciesàUser Rights Assignment.

In User Manager - under "user

Are you using IIS for the FTP sites? Also
check your client FTP app (unless of course you're using DOS.

Just a
simple domain with 30 users. The SBServer is the PDC which is connected directly
to the internet. I want users that hold a valid domain account to have access
to the ftp site (no annonymous access).

Arghh, I
forget how to manipulate attributes such as 'log on locally'thats done

What is
your network setup? Domain model etc.. What type of access are you allowing to
the FTP site? If the FTP server is a member server, do the users have the

IIS4/5 patches

2001-09-18 Thread Allen Crawford
Title: IIS4/5 patches

If anyone is struggling with getting current on locking down your IIS servers, I have spent some time creating an HTML page with links to the downloads, except that I've created it for our LAN.  So, I can email you the self-extracting zipped up version of it offline if you are interested.  I don't think I've left anything out of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if I missed a few items.  It includes the Post-SP6 NT 4 security rollup as well, which adds a good 14MB to the file size, so I can remove that if you would like.

Anyway, I'm emailing this list so hopefully it can help push the admins to install these updates that haven't done so already so we can start putting an end to this Code Red stuff.  Of course, if you are already infected you'll need to get yourself clean.  Does eEye have that Code Red scanner available still?  Doesn't it detect if you are already infected and clean it?  I can't remember and couldn't find it last time I checked their site.  However, the last I checked was a while back.  I'm leaving for the day so I don't have time to check it now and won't get any replies to this message until tomorrow.

Trying to be of assistance to people that are short on time and haven't updated their servers since I personally have found Microsoft's web pages to be extremely cluttered and hard to figure out what you should and shouldn't install.

Can you imagine being a passenger on a hijacked plane after this? It
won't happen again, because the next time a hijack happens, the
passengers will think of New York and storm the hijackers before being
used as a guided missile.

And what job were they supposed to be doing that they didn't?

If you took a poll last week about airplane/airport security, would
there
have been the same level of outcry?

There is often a tendency to over-react in situations like this and
suggest
that every process in the equation is broken. I am not suggesting that
airport security is stellar and could not be improved.  However, to my
knowledge, there was no particular breach of security that was taken
advantage of, for this event.

If anything, having an Air Marshall (or two) on board might have had a
positive impact.  Likewise, denying access to the cockpit would be a
good
idea.

The problem is that everyone wants to be secure, but they don't want to
spend any time or money to do it.

Ya gotta be kidding.  Most of the airports are "managed" by local

able to do it.  Where I live (Atlanta), the General Manager is a

Yeah, some of these changes would increase ticket prices, which is sad since I'm assuming the airlines make a large enough profit to eat some of these extra costs up.  How much does human life cost though?  I think they need to eat a lot of costs being in the business they are in.  But that's just me, someone who isn't quite as money-hungry as many other people are.

 - Require inspection of all luggage and persons boarding aircraft.
That's fine with me.

 - Require passengers to show photo ID at the security gate.
I showed it 5 times at Heathrow, what's another time or two?

 - Forbid un-ticketed people beyond the security gate.
I agree.  Domestic as well as international?

 - Forbid allow any weapons or sharp objects in the passenger compartment.
No CD's? (break 'em)  How am I supposed to cut that thing that passes for
chicken dinner?

 - Require aircraft crew to enter with the same checks as passengers.
Absolutely.

 - Secure service areas against unchecked entry.
Absolutely.

 - Require people entering service areas to show photo ID.
I got a guy in Phoenix that makes the best!

 - Require inspection of people and materials entering service areas.
Absolutely.

 - Monitor service areas with closed-circuit cameras.
Hi Mom!

 - Patrol service areas with armed police.
Did my ticket price just jump from $250 to $350?

 - Deploy a program of armed and uniformed police aboard every flight.
Did they used to have Marshals?

 - Supplement said police with random undercover agents.
My ticket price just went up again.

 - Restrict and protect access to the flight deck, as already noted.
I think this is a current recommendation somewhere.

 - Replace the existing Air Traffic Control system with one that functions
correctly (their equipment is known to be inadequate for the tasks of the
past, let alone today), and track all flights at all times.  Require pilots
to remain in regular contact.  If contact is lost, assume the flight may be
hostile, and be prepared to intercept it as a last resort.

It definitely can't run on NT then.

Granted that weapons can always be improvised.  Failing anything else, a
fist makes a passable weapon against even a knife.  However, I still think
banning any weapon or cutting implement has some advantages.  First, I don't
think we should make it any easier for the bad guys.  Second, there is a
physiological impact when someone holds up something designed to cut.  A man
with a knife is a terrorist.  A man with a broken CD is a crazy person.

objects that pass for knifes, so nothing lost there.  ;-)

Title: RE: WAKE UP

The measures that need to be changed are the security checkpoints.  The metal detectors and x-rays.  Keeping the U.S. Marshals on the planes like they did in the past.  Restricting (and actually ENFORCING) the carry-on bags (quantity and size).  All these things would help prevent getting weapons on board.  Granted people could still carry makeshift, non-metal weapons on themselves, but maybe we need a general pat-down as well.  I would gladly deal with that extra "hassle" to prevent this sort of thing from happening again.  Providing more leg room would even help if you ask me.  I'd be more apt to display action vs. a hijacker if I could get out of my seat quick enough.  It's really a shame if the hijackers only had knives on those planes, but then again, the passengers had no idea what their intentions were I imagine.

It is just a shame to see us get lax on security.  Would any of you set up a brand new firewall and then not update it for five years?

Of course not.  Your suggestions, however, do nothing to minimize our
freedoms.

I'm opposed to the mentality that would have cameras everywhere, and require
us to get permission to geo to the bathroom.

Can anyone point out any specific things that airport security could have
done to avert the atrocities of 09/11/01?   If not, it means you're probably
barking up the wrong tree.

Our strength is our freedom, and it was used against us.  However, rigid
controls against movement, and having to fly virtually unclothed in order to
eliminate the likelihood of carrying any weapons, is not the way to go.

As an aside, hijackers are going to find it somewhat harder to subdue a
plane full of people in the future, since the risk of death via action (vs.
inaction) has been largely minimized.

ADSL has just been introduced in Ireland. I was in the process of installing
a leased line Internet connection with Worldcom, and discovered that ADSL
would be about 30% of the price. My one worry is IP address allocation. Does
anyone know if ADSL supports public Ips? IE, will my exchange server work?
Will my users be able to connect in via a VPN etc.?

Thanks,
Brian Judge.

With all due respect - if WWIII is the result of this it won't have been

Bush who started it.

Yes, a measured response is appropriate at this time -- but there will be a

response.  Count on it.

Let's not get into semantics.  By catastrophe, I'm talking about something that happened unexpectedly and instantly, or as close to instantly as you can get.  Sneak attacks and major accidents fit into this category.

Well, my experience with Web JetAdmin is minimal to say the least, and
we only have about 9 or 10 printers here, so maybe that’s why I don’t notice
the old JetAdmin running slow.  I
may just give TCP/IP printing a try though (never played with it) and ditch
that stuff altogether.  I haven’t
worried about it much though since I’ve tried my best to stick with HP
printers.  We just bought a color
laser printer and I thought for a minute we’d have a non-HP printer to deal
with, but that wasn’t the case.  Anyway,
it would be good to learn in case we do buy a non-HP printer.

The old JetAdmin could take its time on
some tasks as well. Updating and filtering the list of printers found was a job
best done during lunch breaks (or weekends, in some cases) at one of my
previous jobs. Of course, that was a college campus with a fairly flat network
and literally hundreds of HP printers...

My only concern with Webjetadmin is the
reliance on something that has already proven vulnerable to an attack that will
continue to be frequent. (CodeRed and IIS worms in general). Granted, you could
do a lot more damage running hpdwnld and doing some "specific things"
during a firmware upgrade, but at least that was not related to any common IIS
exploit or other internet worm.

Ok, one more question.  How do you find the original IP address of the JetDirect
card (i.e. when you buy a new one)?
I currently use telnet to make my changes as well, but I have to use
JetAdmin (or WebJetAdmin) to find the original IP (which is usually assigned
via DHCP).  After that I make it a
static IP so I can always telnet to it when I need to make changes.

Hi!

We are GMT+2 so I am only now reading your conversation!

You don't need any fdisk.  a blank disk is best place to start. Boot from CD
(or 3 stiffies) and it will self detect that nothing is set up.

It will then ask you to define partitions and when you play along, it will
give you the option to use the whole disk as the partition BUT (I think this
has changed but my server CD build 1381 I think) will allow a maximum of 2GB
as the first partition else you get that message you mentioned.

You can increase this partition later using Partition Magic or the like -
there might be other suggestions but I set up our drives as c=2 or 1.5(OS),
f=±50%of remainder for APPS and R:=the rest for Data unless the installation
requires different.

Then remember to do the sup pack (6a) before trying to do fancy NIC's and
Video drivers.

Good Luck

Erich

Hey All,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a screen saver
or something that will lock a NT Workstation if it isnt used for X minutes. We
have a machine behind reception which is used for DB Queries and everyone
always leaves it loged in. Ive decided to make it hard for them by having the
workstation lock if they dont use it for 5 minutes. That way the next person to
use it will have to track down the previous user to unlock it. Im sure the
annoyance will fix it REALLY quick!!!

Any ideas how i could achieve this, i dont want
a screensaver password i want the workstation locked.

Got this from Lockergnome Tech Specialist:

IE6 and McAfee No less than four readers
wrote in to complain about Internet Explorer 6 and McAfee virus scanning
software. While I don't consider this a Microsoft problem, some might. Norton
AV seems to work just fine on one of my systems, but I can't personally speak
for McAfee. Tread lightly around the issue, as their support has told two of
those that wrote in very bluntly that they should simply reinstall IE 5.5x.
That's a complete cop-out in my book. There was plenty of lead-time on IE6 for
McAfee to get their act together, so I don't think there's any excuse for not
having an update available. Just wanted to warn you.

Well, when
I installed it here good ol’ Windows File Protection kicked in and kept asking
me for my Service Pack 2 CD, which of course does not exist.  I installed it off my local hard drive
and the files are still there, yet it prompts me for a CD that doesn’t exist
and doesn’t give me the option of browsing to a local or network folder or even
tell me what file it is looking for.
Maybe Microsoft will fix this with SP3…

It's to do with Windows File Protection. I
can only assume that, as the base install files are in the dllcache area, any
customisation that changes what Windows expects to see would get replaced by
the 'original' files.

File protection is a good idea but seems
to still need a few tweaks yet.

The
customized install does not work if you are running Windows 2000 and probably
Windows XP.  Only 9x, ME, and NT give you that option.  Very stupid

Actually, you can install active desktop and quick launch toolbar
with the following command.  Just navigate to directory where you have IE
installed and run this command:

ie5setup.exe /q /c:"ie5wzd /I:Y /S:""#e""
"

Someone posted it to this list a few months ago, and it worked

Did Active Desktop get installed? I found a couple of years ago that
depending on the version of IE installed, you may not get Active Desktop
installed, and thus no quick launch tool bar. This I noticed when going from
IE 4 to 5. If you have an old IE 4 CD, you could remove IE from your NT box,
install IE 4 with the Active Desktop, then add in what ever version of IE
you want, of course all followed by re-applying sp6a.

You'll need to install good old IE 4 to get the ActiveX desktop stuff.

I've restaged an NT 4.0 Server (ugh) for testing a software package we
want to use.  It's a fresh copy of NT, applied SP6a and all upgrades,
hotfixes I could find, but I cannot find out how to activate or add the
option for the Quick Launch toolbar. I've searched the archives & technet
and found nothing pertaining to this. Does anyone know how I can set it
up?

Thanks!

There's one policy that shuts off logoff on the start menu only (including the ability to display the "Log Off Username" option) and a separate option that gets all the other bases.  Actually, the second one said it turns off the ability to log off the system in any manner, but it leaves the start menu thing alone, so you have to disable it in both spots.

What about Ctrl+Alt+Del, that gets you the option to logoff as well.  Does
the policy prevent you from doing that?

IIRC, one used to be able to set up a policy that would disable permission
to shut down.  Doing this, it seems, also kept folks from logging off (as
they had to hit "shut down" in order to log off).

If this still holds, create a group for this user and apply this policy.

Just
trying to make a certain user not be able to log off.  Don’t ask me why, it is for one of our software
engineers.  We sell mail sorting/barcoding
 machines and apparently they don’t
want the machine operator to be able to log off.  They are allowing them to reboot or shutdown though.  Of course, I’ve never used the group policy
editor before so now I just need to figure out how to apply this to one user
and not the whole system.

What exactly
are you trying to achieve?

Please
ignore this.  I found it in the
