RE: satellite connection

2001-09-26 Thread Dennis Atherton

The offering from Radio Shack / MSN is the same service as Starband, but
they make you buy the complete computer. They don't want to be liable for
computer problems. The Starband Offering uses a USB box, to act as
transmitter and receiver. Goes to a dish that does 2-way communications.

DirectPC - the Hughes satellite offering - had for 2 years offered Sat
Downloads, with a 56K modem for uploads. They are now offering 2-way
communications - with SAT both ways, but are much more restrictive on what
you can use it for.

Hope this helps.

RE: Using W2K RAS to connect to a Novell 5.1 Network

2001-09-13 Thread Dennis Atherton

We have the Novell Client active on the remote machines - installed and
selected at boot time.

When a remote user starts up normally, it does not see any Novell Servers,
so it goes to sleep.

When a remote connection is established, it will see that there is Novell
Traffic on the connection, and bring up your Novell Login automatically. You
then log into your tree and away you go.

Upgrade to version 7.51.

It is much more reliable for updates, and lives along with Firewalls.

Updated our 4 sites remotely, and all are now working totally automatically.

We use NAVCE 7.5 as well. We were never able to get the Live Update to work
reliably. Somewhere on the Symantec site is a document that outlines an
alternate procedure for downloading updates by FTP. For what it's worth,
the following is our procedure:

Use AT to schedule the following batch file on our NAV server:
d:\program files\nav\cegetter.bat

--- cegetter.bat ---
ftp -s:d:\progra~1\nav\cescript.txt
c:\temp\sarcx86.exe /q /dump /vdb c:\temp
copy c:\temp\*.vdb d:\progra~1\nav
del /q c:\temp\*.vdb
del /q c:\temp\sarcx86.exe

--- cescript.txt ---
open ftp.symantec.com
anonymous
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
cd public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus/static
lcd C:\temp
bin
hash
prompt
get sarcx86.exe
quit

Each client periodically checks the parent server and downloads the updates
automatically. Once we adopted this method of retrieving updates we no
longer had problems.

Subject: NAV-CE updates

I have a continuous fight with NAV-CE 7.5 trying to get definition
updates. My main LiveUpdate Administrator faithfully downloads updates
each and every night (according to the logs). Now, I have two
servers. From each one, I can go to the support area (in the console)
and download definitions. I can even run the update. However, each
server (as well as all the clients) still show the old definition on the
console (as well as on the NAV client app when opened).

I went through this back in AUG, so definitions went from early AUG to
22-AUG. That's where they are now. From the server consoles, I jump
through all the hoops to which I am pointed to force updates to both
servers and all clients. The consoles claim to have updated them, but I
still see 22-AUG. Furthermore, in the NAV logs and in the W2K Event Logs,
I NEVER see update errors!

One thing more - if from one of the consoles I try to run LiveUpdate
(looking to the LUAdministrator machine) from the NAV app, it goes through
the sequence Looking for update, etc, then when it gets to Installing
the update, it hangs. The hour glass stays there, and the animation
continues indefinitely. (In the Task Manager, I do not see it running as
an app, and I can't identify it as a process. CPU and RAM usage are
low.) Again, no change in definition versions.

Yes, I've looked through the books and the Symantec KB. AAARRRGGGHHH!

I have family that work there and in Battery Park.

There are usually 50,000 people in the two towers.

Start time is normally 8:00 AM for many, and this was 8:50 AM, so many would

It would take over 2 hours to evacuate each tower - working together.

Everyone needs to step back and see what happens,

Strange thing started happening last week. All the domain administrators
have lost the capability of using usrmgr.exe and srvmgr.exe! They come up,
but any attempt to make changes gets ACCESS DENIED.

All accounts are still domain admins, and all rights remain unchanged.
Checked for viruses and resynched, but no change. We are running Novell
Account manager in parallel, but nothing has changed with it either,
although I am most suspicious of this as the cause, but I need to cover all

Also could be problem with what account was used to install the NAV service.
If it does not have enough privileges, it will fail to open some mailboxes.

Also, they suggested I run just VAPI mode, to disable MAPI mode, as there
have been problems with Timeouts while MAPI scans messages on a well-used

Thanks for all the feedback. What ended up fixing it, was to start the
remote registry service on the target server.

For anyone who cares to know how I discovered this was to use Netmon while I
tried to establish connection to the server with Event Viewer. 2 things
that stuck out were NT Create X, File = \winreg and the reply was NT
error, System, Error, Code = (52) STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND..

I did a search at Microsoft for create \winreg, and
STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND, which is equivalent to a win32 error of..
Error file not found.. and the winreg search brought me to some
information about network access to the registry.. so 1 + 1 = Remote
Registry Service Not Started!

Thanks again for the feedback. This seems like a great list and I hope I'll
have some useful contributions in the future.
