Subject: Petition to prevent war

Dear friends,
You may already have received this, but in case not. This is being
widely
circulated on many lists today. I urge you to at least go to the site
and
sign the petition and send it to everyone you know, even those outside
the
US, ASAP. Very important to do it as soon as
possible. Click on the link below and you will get to the petition.

- mitko

Please sign The Petition at
http://home.uchicago.edu/~dhpicker/petition
which appeals to world leaders to be level-headed and, wherever
possible,
peaceful in their response to the recent attack against the United
States.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE, AS QUICKLY AS
POSSIBLE. The signatures logged by the website above will be forwarded
to
leaders around the world. It is imperative that we act quickly to
prevent
war!!!

The Petition
What follows is a petition that will be forwarded to President Bush, and
other world leaders, urging them to avoid war as a response to the
terrorist
attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon this week.
Please
read it, sign below, and forward the link to as many people as possible,
as
quickly as possible. We must circulate this quickly if it is to have any
effect at all, as the Congress of The United States has already passed a
resolution supporting any military action President Bush deems
appropriate.

We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of the United States of
America
and of countries around the world, appeal to the President of The United
States, George W. Bush; to the NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson;
to
the President of the European Union, Romano Prodi; and to all leaders
internationally to use moderation and restraint in responding to the
recent
terrorist attacks against the United States.

We implore the powers that be to use, wherever possible, international
judicial institutions and international human rights law to bring to
justice
those responsible for the attacks, rather than the instruments of war,
violence or destruction. Furthermore, we assert that the government of a
nation must be presumed separate and distinct from any terrorist group
that
may operate within its borders, and therefore cannot be held unduly
accountable for the latter's crimes.

It follows that the government of a particular nation should not be
condemned for the recent attack without compelling evidence of its
cooperation and complicity with those individuals who actually committed
the
crimes in question. Innocent civilians living within any nation that may
be
found responsible, in part or in full, for the crimes recently
perpetrated
against the United States, must not bear any responsibility for the
actions
of their government, and must therefore be guaranteed safety and
immunity
from any military or judicial action taken against the state in which
they
reside.

Lastly and most emphatically, we demand that there be no recourse to
nuclear, chemical or biological weapons, or any weapons of
indiscriminate
destruction, and feel that it is our inalienable human right to live in
a
world free of such arms.

---
Regards,

Harry Corsover

RE: has anyone used doubletake successfully?

2001-09-14 Thread Gordon Olson

There is no problem with the failover it is the failback that does not work
as designed. You will be pretty much on your own also the tech support is
not very good. If you work with the product for more then a couple of days
you will not more then the support dudes.

We are using it with IIS, SQL7 running on NT and it works great, fails over
within 30 seconds. WE don't have a large volume of ecommerce so that is fine
for us. The fail back is the only spot where we have to go in and remove the
failed over ip manually because it just won't work right. It has once or
twice but most often it does not work as advertised. We have messed with it
and messed with it and - well, it is just easier to manually remove the ip
etc...

Hope that helps,

side note - we are using co-standby server for another app and it works
outstanding and it is much easier to configure. I like them both each are
unique.

I'd like to know if you've ever had to failover to the other server and
how quickly and smoothly, if at all that went?

Also, did you look at any other products or solutions before deciding on
Double Take and, if so, why did you decide on Double Take?

I understand that my situation may differ but I'm looking at using a web
server (IIS) and SQL 7.0 on NT or 2000 as the operating system (depends
on when the decisions are made) and data will need to be replicated and
if the primary server goes down there should be as quick and smooth as
possible a transition to the backup machine. I've had personal
experience with NT Cluster server and, for this application, the
failover takes too long. We are hoping to minimize transaction loss as
much as possible.

RE: has anyone used doubletake successfully?

2001-09-14 Thread Gordon Olson

We tested it over a WAN and it appeared to work fine, and that was one
reason that we went with doubletake because it seemed to be the superior
choice over a WAN. We use it on the LAN currently.

Thanks for the information to all who responded!

One more question: Do you keep the second server in another location
(necessitating a WAN link) or on the same subnet or different subnet?

I'm interested in how well the failover goes with the second server
off-site.

I'm implementing doubletake as we speak. I've found fail over and
replication work as advertised. If the fail back instructions are followed
explicitly fail back works fine as well

NT Backup Problem

2001-08-31 Thread Gordon Olson

I am using NT Backup and I am getting the following error There is no
unused media available with the selected type. In TechNet Q269600 is the
only article listed and I tried it even though it is for a different drive.

I have tried several different tapes, same message.

How do you get the device to recognize the media? The device works ok with
Backup Exec.

Any suggestions, I am running NTbackup for exchange on another DLT device
and it works fine.

TIA

RE: Authenticating from a subnet without a BDC.

2001-08-27 Thread Gordon Olson

It sounds like you have it setup so broadcasts cannot pass from one subnet
to another. You will need to allow either a directed broadcast or broadcasts
to pass. For example if the two subnets were separated bt a router you would
need ip helper addresses pointing to to the PDC.

Subject: Authenticating from a subnet without a BDC.

A recent change in my network has caused some interesting issues, and I
wanted to get some advice.

We've recently added a 3rd interface to our PIX 520 firewall. We stuck our
web servers on it. (We only have one domain, and kept these part of it)

I've allowed traffic from the web servers to the domain controllers for
authentication purposes. (There is no BDC on the subnet with the web
servers. The other subnets do have BDC's)

Last week things appeared to be working correctly. I could log into the
servers (not using a cached profile) and from my inside subnet I could
browse the machines. (The PIX does some funky things with IP address
aliasing on a DMZ like this.)

Now, I come in monday morning, the machines are no longer getting
authentication information from the domain controllers. (This could have
occurred last week too, I suppose). A user changed their password, and no
cannot log onto the web server. I understand the web server broadcasts for
a domain controller to pick it up, but I also realize that they know the IP
addresses (somewhere) of the other domain controllers. I know this because
of the firewalling logging when it was closed off. The machine attempted
connections to every one of my domain controllers. So, it doesn't seem to
be authenticating to the domain anymore...

I entered an entry in the lmhosts file pointing out the domain and PDC, but
alas, no go.

Anything that can be offered, I'd appreciate. One other small tidbit. The
web servers are 2000 systems, everything else is NT4.

Thanks,

Jason

Power Outage - Heating Up

2001-08-14 Thread Gordon Olson

We have a rather large facility, raised floor and air conditioned. We have a
backup generator that handle the Computer Room really well during a power
outage except it was never sized to handle the Air cooling unit.

We had a rolling black out recently that lasted two hours and the room got
very very hot. Yes, I am in California.

We are in the process of enlarging the Computer room and we are going to
resize the generator at that time. But, my question is - is there some way
we can setup some type of alert if the temp in the room goes up? It needs to
be able to send an email or place a call in case it happened after normal
work hours. Anyone have any ideas? How about a way to send an alert if the
air unit loses power? If we could setup alerts we could gracefully shut
servers down remotely if need be or something.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Gordon
