RE: Workstation Naming Standards
Wow, never thought of that. Yeah, that seems pretty obvious. ;) Upside, we could lock the ports down where a certain workstation only worked at a certain port, so midnight moves stopped. Also, finding a workstation name meant we had it's location also. Downside, more admin time, but it proved itself often. Just so you'll know, the order that I listed them is the order of the ways that I have done it. Therefore the PC001 is the way that we do it currently because now CA tracks it for us. You look on the spreadsheet and see that PC1046 is in my office and you come beat me. I personally think that if you have a small environment and time for admin, you are a fool to not put something that locates a PC for you in the name (extension, room number, something). If you have a large environment or too little headcount, you are a fool for trying. :) Get a tool and just name them generically. To try and say that one way is always right is pretty silly. That is why I listed the 3 ways that I have done it. Just as an FYI though, the first way (with the room number) worked for me when I managed the group that supported 1,400+ users. Of course I has almost 20 headcount also. :) JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/27/01 07:22PM And a machine gets moved to another room and you have to rename it! RE: Nimda - Thought we were protected
The only thing that I would add is that rather than attaching to the net un-patched and downloading it, you should burn as much as possible to CD and load it from there before attaching to the net the first time. For instance the SP and all current hotfixes can be downloaded, batched and burned. This keeps you from getting infected that first time that you connect. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/24/01 07:32PM NT System Admin List: We are doing the following with a great deal of success: Simple Option - if not too badly infected: 1. Have the system on the net only long enough to get the latest virus update. 2. Run Norton Anti-Virus with the latest virus update. 3. Reboot with your Win2k or WinNT or Win98 (etc) CD and run it in Repair mode. 4. Go back on the Internet - avoid the local net if you can. 5. Get IE 5.5 SP2 right away. 6. Reapply the latest Service Packs to the OS and Office and IIS - if appropriate. 7. Make sure NAV is running daily and getting updates daily or more frequently. 8. Set NAV to clean all your email and downloads. 9. Clean all other machines before plugging (or allowing) it back onto the local net. 10. Make sure Windows Critical Update Notification is installed - and pay attention to it. 11. Reconnect only after all the other machines that are allowed on the local net are clean. If BADLY infected: 1. Load the OS (Win2k or WinNT or Win98 (etc)) on a partition that does NOT have a boot loader on it. 2. OR plug in a new drive (temporarily) in the IDE 0 position and change the BIOS to reflect the new drive 3. Load a new copy of the OS on this clean partition/drive. 4. Go back on the Internet - avoid the local net if you can. 5. Get IE 5.5 SP2 immediately - Don't go anywhere else but http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com 6. Reapply the latest Service Packs to the OS. 7. Install NAV 8. Run Norton Anti-Virus with the latest virus update on all drives. 9. Shut it down and boot from the original partition. (If you added a drive, undo it and reset BIOS) 10. Go back on the Internet - avoid the local net if you can. 11. Get IE 5.5 SP2 12. Reapply the latest Service Packs to the OS. 13. Install NAV 14. Run Norton Anti-Virus with the latest virus update on all drives - again. 15. Reapply the latest Service Packs to IIS and Office. 16. Re: IIS4 not responding after security update.
I will let others answer as to what might have gone wrong, but always recommend downloading the fixes and the running them rather than running them from the site. All it takes is a net hiccup and a lockup and all of the sudden, no IIS. You run a much smaller chance of this with the download and then execute path. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/24/01 07:54PM Win 98 SAFE MODEWe have an old IIS4 box that we still have ppl hosted on, because that is what they perfer. We went to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and it said we were missing a critical update. We went ahead and told it to upate the box, but after the update completed, I noticed a DOS window that would not close. It stayed up for at least 20 minutes. I finally closed the dialog and the machine wanted to reboot. I told it yes, but then the machine went blank (green screen), but didn't reboot. I then had to hard boot it.. Now it seems IIS4 is not responding to the point I can't even go into MMC. Websites are down and we can't seem to get it up and running again. Everything except the webserver is working. Any clues to what was hung up and how we can fix this problem? If we reinstall IIS4, we would have to reinstall the SP's and the security patches.. We did it here and NT has never been the same. One of the biggest issue that we have still are that users that were created while the link was there can not be administered by anyone unless they have Domain Admin access. This kind of stinks here because our helpdesk resets passwords. I have had to give them Domain Admin access to do this and I am not happy. There was another guy on the list a year or so ago. We'll see if he has anything to add. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/23/01 09:00PM Folks I am sorry if this seems off topic - it is a question regarding Novell and NT being joined together and the possibility of breaking that link. Domain is Win NT 4 sp6a PDC and BDC Novell 4.11 NDS single server. Clients mix of mainly win 98 and a few 2000/NT WS. A prior admin joined the NT domain with the Novell NDS by using NDS for NT by Novell. I would like to break that link and keep things separate. I have seen it networks that needed both function much better when NT and Novell are not aware of each other. There are no Novell Resources need by any NT servers. I realize it will require more administration but I actually prefer that. Has anyone ever broken this link? I have a KB from Novell Doc ID 10011753. Any one know of any pitfalls? Is there any way to know for sure? More Nimda stuff.
Maybe I am being paranoid. I have a server that the eeye scanner says is not vulnerable, I don't see any .eml files on it and when I scan for files changed since the 18th, there are no .exes. However, when I look at the task list, it shows 2 CMD.EXEs open. I have one open but not two. Am I being weird here? The second CMD.EXE un-nerves me, but I can't find any other sign of infection. Is there any one, sure fire way to KNOW that the box has been hit? Is there one registry entry or file or something that the virus ALWAYS does so I can see if the box is hit? I am thinking about re-building it, just in case, but if I can leave it up, I would obviously prefer that. Any ideas? JayW http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm

RE: Airport security (was: The idiocy continues!)
My guess is that it wasn't that there was no one to land it, but rather as low as they were flying, when a fight broke out, the plane dove and no one had time to pull it up. From all reports the plane was flying EXTREMELY low and suddenly shot down and exploded. I don't believe that they overpowered it and then didn't even try to get someone through talking them down. I think the fight started and it was continuing on right up until the moment of ground contact. My thoughts. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/13/01 04:48PM What I heard was that the passengers on that plane had heard the news of what happened to the other hijacked plane and knew what was planned for them so they took control of the plane but there was no one to land it. I am probably going to p a few folks off with this one, but think of this. That last plane went down 1 hour and 15 minutes after the first plane hit the WTC. I smell a cover up with that 4th plane. My gut screams at me that the US Gov't decided that those people on that plane were about to be killed no matter what. The plane was in the middle of nowhere when it went down. I don't think the US had any choice but to shoot that plane down, and it is something they can never, ever admit to either, even if the sacrifice of those lives equaled the preservation of potentially thousands of people. Second, shooting a gun off on a plane is akin to suicide. If the bullet goes out of the fuselage, the plane will depressurize, which jeopardizes the 'mission' in the first place. RE: Airport security (was: The idiocy continues!)
There is evidence that the plane that crashed in PA had just that happen. However, what if they simply shoot everyone first? I would assume the fact that they didn't have guns might. The issue is not how to prevent other weapons, etc. We have done a decent job with keeping the guns out, now what do you do with people with knives, broken CDs, etc. They are not going to be able to stab everyone. So how does the airlines handle it if it happens tomorrow? What are their plans? I think that is what they were going after. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/13/01 04:59PM I too believe that the government should get more involved by instituting more strict security policies, but I also feel that the airports and airlines themselves should (and hope would want to) institute policies under their own power. If it was the policy of a privately owned airport to pat down each and every passenger before going through security gates, how many do you think would actually complain about their rights being taken away? It's a rule they'll have to abide by to fly. Plain and simple. The pilots are another story as well. Why can't they carry stun guns or tazers into the cockpit? Why can't they have steel barriers between the cockpit and cabin? It certainly wouldn't pose any more of a safetly issue. Why not make a certain degree of martial arts be a pre-requisite for all prospective flight attendants/pilots from here on out? It's no secret their job is becoming more and more important, and hazardous. Only people that have been trained to handle these types of situations should be allowed to hold these positions. I don't mean to disriminate here, but I've been on flights with ederly flight attendants that had a hard time walking down the aisle. What could an 80 year old woman do to help any passengers in these types of situations? I think adding an armed sky marshal to every plane would be a significant improvement in safety and preventive measures. But would we be introducing another potential danger? What amount of money will it take to keep these sky marshals from being disgruntled and downing planes themselves? There's no doubt in my mind that measures need to be taken, and I think they're making a good start. It's only natural to implement small changes as quick as possible and leave time for major changes to be investigated and researched. Re: RUMORS CONCERNING THE PRICE OF GAS AND LINES AT GAS STATIONS
We had the same prices, but HUGE lines and even a couple of station were shown on the news as tapped dry. The fact that 3 AG's (OK, TX and MS) reported issues with it yesterday, implies it did occur, but I didn't see anything but the long lines personally. So, not the bulls**it you thought, but not quite the big deal that some of us thought either. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/12/01 08:46AM For those of you who posted RUMORS of gas lines and rising prices for gasoline, consider yourself part of OUR enemy. PLEASE, PLEASE post only information that you personally know to be factual. So here are the facts from the Northern Suburbs of Chicago, where our gas prices are among the highest in the U.S. I reported yesterday that a gas station near my office was at $2.09 for a gallon of premium on my way into work yesterday morning. However, when I went out for lunch, the price had DROPPED to $1.99 per gallon. After all the RUMORS yesterday and the fact that I had less than a quarter of a tank of gas in my car, I was somewhat concerned. But at 5:00PM that gas station near my office was STILL at $1.99 per gallon and to my surprise, NO LINES! I figured that since I pass several gas stations on my way home, I'd take a chance that the RUMORS were bulls**t and wait to fill at the station near my home. Well, every gas station I passed had the same pricing as in the morning and there were NO LINES to be seen. Finally, I came to the gas station near my home, and the price of gas hadn't changed and there were NO LINES, so I pulled in and filled up as usual. So for those of you who are willing to pass rumors and join our enemies in battle, I suggest you have an opportunity to leave the enemy and rejoin us who are lucky enough to live in the greatest land of all. And the way to do that is to check the facts before posting erroneous information and contributing to what could have been a real panic in the U.S. Murray F. RE: FW: NewYork Terrorist Attack
And we could have easily sat back and waited until our continent (not just our territory) was attacked, but we didn't. Sure the Sleeping Giant was awoke, but he didn't respond back to Japan only (or even primarily for that matter). We can all sit back now and question why we didn't enter earlier. It is easy to question policy when hindsight is 20/20. However, what you can't question is whether or not America just beefed up it's on shores and waited for Germany to bring the war to them or whether they sent the kids overseas to stop a country that was attacking countries that are geographically nowhere near the contiguous 48 states. America provided all of the help that Europe asked for, for years leading up to Pearl Harbor. At the time no one knew that America should have entered on principal because no one was aware of the Final Plan and all that went along with it. This is a perfect example of how people want America to stay out of their issues. This is was the attitude that De Galle and Churchill both expressed early on. We provided them with what they asked for. Japan attacked us and instead of just attacking them back America realized that it really needed to fight on both fronts. It did so and helped the world pull through. Contrast that to Russia's position. They were very similar to America and they were sticking it out also. Russia entered into a treaty with Germany even. Russia was then attacked by Germany. They didn't immediately send a fleet over to the Philippines. They didn't get with England and say, What do you need? They fortified their borders and defended themselves. Whether or not America entered early enough will always be debated. Whether or not they were primarily responsible for winning is not. Whether or not they could/should have just turned their fury on Japan and left Europe alone seems debatable to me. Whether or not they did so does not. We didn't enter it as soon as we could (although I do believe it was as soon as we were asked). But we most certainly did not fight this war as someone with THEIR security snip threatened. or it would have been handled on a different stage. We had no known issue with Germany other than the fact that they were starting to beat our neighbors. So in effect, America was fighting for itself as well. Not unless we fought our war solely against Japan and I think a quick perusal of any history book will tell you that this is not what happened. Germany would have let us clean Japan's clock if it would have meant us not entering into the European conflict. We chose to not even try this route. Again, I don't see how any of this was not helping our neighbors as they were given what they said they needed from us. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/12/01 10:13AM OK, I don't want to get into a huge debate or anything, but if I remember my history correctly, America was sitting out WWII until Pearl Harbour. RE: FW: NewYork Terrorist Attack
Trust me. By the time Pearl Harbor was involved, it was a forgone conclusion that America was involved on both fronts. We were already sending raw materials and weapons (guns, tanks, planes, etc.). All that was missing was our people to shoot, drive, and fly them. America declared war on Japan but had already committed to everything but headcount on the other front also. Again, I would like to point out though that this is exactly what Europe had asked for. Perhaps America needs to revisit this policy of helping out rather than stepping-in and trying to solve everything. Although in this case, war was the eventual outcome (and of Kuwait also), this is not necessarily true of Bosnia, Somalia and a host of others that we got involved in. Of course those are my 2 cents. Maybe people looking back in 50 years will know things we don't. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 09/12/01 10:13AM Except that the US declared war on Japan only. Now that flame was actually amusing. Guys, trust me, the debates between these 3 religions (Islam, Judiasm, and Christianity) are numerous and have been raging for 1,000's of years. They won't be solved here. Suffice to say that lumping all Muslim's together is akin to saying that all Christian would kill abortionist just because a few of them have. Most of the people that follow any of the religions are outraged at the loss of human life. Debating which one is right is better left for another day. Debating whether or not it is wrong to hold all of a particular religion responsible for the actions of a few would seem to fit today, but I doubt that anyone here is going to solve it any time soon. The grieving I understand. The debates on our policies towards our neighbors I understand. Even the debates on what part America holds when doling out the responsibility for this attack I understand. Trying to reconcile things that are diametrically opposed I don't. The religions will not jibe. That in no way, shape, or form, means that the followers of each religion will now (or should now) kill each other. We actually had 2 bomb threats here and many of the roads downtown were closed for a couple of hours (just in case). Considering how many times we are accused of being the world's policemen and getting involved in way too much, Murray, that comment seems bizarre to me. I hope and pray to my imaginary friend that nothing like this ever happens to Canada, but I can bet you that if it did, America would be there. In times of catastrophe Americans are often the first to respond with, What do you need? and the last to leave after the buildings are cleared and the people are safe or buried. As I said, I hope it never happens to you, but if it does, I think you will find that you are mistaken and that Americans would care very much if something similar happened in Toronto or Edmonton. You can loop it from that site. There is a Short Range / Loop on the left. Loop it and then zoom in. RE: HFNetchk Automation
Pretty neat. A lot of the things that we were all screaming about when it came to the Command Line version of the Hotfix checker have existed all this while. You just needed to buy them. I REALLY like the AccountInspector. It gathers the info quickly and easily and lets you organize it how you want to see it, save it in a CSV format and import it directly to Excel with graphs already drawn. (Free solution for the poor folks = DumpSEC and AddUsers, lots of conversion and a pirated copy of Excel, just kidding Mr. Gates) The HFNetChkPro is basically the same info, but no errors or command line switches to foul up. It does a better job of explaining why this patch is needed and why that patch is not found. (Free Solution = HFNetChk from Microsoft to a text file, conversion and a pirated copy of Excel, again, not really serious here Mr. Gates) I was a little disappointed with the PasswordInspector. I could run it on my local box, but not the PDC. I don't know if that is because it is an eval version or what. (Free Solution = DOS version of L0phtcrack among others) All told, the tools are neat and easy to use. The cost will be the main hindrance to most. All of the info that these tools gather can be found for free. If you have the time and knowledge, it's there. If you don't have the time or knowledge, do you have $500. If you do, buy it. If you don't, get the knowledge and run the free tools instead. If it was $100-$200, I would tell everyone to grab it. The time it would save you in gathering and conversion would probably be worth it. However, at $500, Shavlik has cut out a large group of the poor, huddled masses, yearning to be free. These are the times that I love working for a huge corporation because $500 is nothing to them and this thing makes pretty little graphs that PHB's love. I will probably pick up the real version just because it is easier that running 10 tools, formatting and combining the data and then getting it presentation ready. My 2 cents. Re: hack or virus?
Hack and a rather old one. Major patching needs to be done. After the format and rebuild that is. I think this is the one where it infected Sun boxes and then the Sun boxes infected NT boxes. It came out right after the US/China spy plane incident, so obviously they haven't patched in quite a while. RE: Compaq Array Controllers and Windows NT4 Security Roll-Up - Q299 444
Kind of, I have posted this one a bunch, but again, the issue is 99% of the time the SCSIPORT.SYS. I have always fixed it from the BSoD and haven't tried the Compaq fix yet, but maybe this will help anyway. You need to boot off of your ERD Pro diskettes or some other software that allows you to boot from diskette and see the NTFS drives (if you don't have a way to do this, you will need to again some day, so buy ERD Pro) and copy SCSIPORT.SYS from the WINNT\$$NtUninstallQ299444$$ directory back to WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS. You will see that one is 36K and one is 37K (or is it 56 and 57, can't remember now). When you reboot the BSoD goes away. I am hoping that this will also solve your 4 dots issue, but I can't guarantee it. If you don't have ERD Pro and you can't buy ERD Pro, then you will need to install NT to another directory, boot from there and then copy the file using the old directory path. Hope one of those helps. BTW, Compaq says that if you re-run the SSD after running the SPs and HFs, but before you reboot, you shouldn't bluescreen. I have found this to be untrue, but it is worth a shot. I would virtually guarantee that if you had run the cp001095.exe before rebooting, you would have been O.K. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/24/01 11:26AM I have a Compaq Prolaint 5500 (NT 4.0 SP6a) w Smart Array 4200 Controller that Blue Screened after installing the Q299444 Security Roll-up patch. It is not a mission-critical unit (yet) as it runs only the users' default home page when they start IE though it was supposed to go live in a week as the IIS for OWA. On to the problem... All IIS services (NNTP, FTP, HTTP) are stopped. I click on one of them at random and hit Start. Nothing happens. I click Start again after a few seconds. The service in question will start and function normally, however anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes later, it'll stop again. There is no message in the log file other than a notice in the Security log that the IIS account logged in and out at start/stop. RE: IIS stopping without reason
It can't be Code Red... Until that machine actually goes live, port 80 is blocked to outside traffic As far as blocking port 80 to outside, I am pretty sure that Code Red can be adapted to hit any port, it just does 80 for obvious reasons. Also, I would wonder about internal boxes that then in turn got to this box. the Index Server service is disabled. Doesn't matter. All that has to be there is the IDA.dll or whatever file it was that eeye found the original vuln in. If the file is there, you can be hit. It is a buffer overflow, so it doesn't depend on a service, just the mere existence of a file. Not patched (not my choice, people higher up make decisions I can't argue with) Been there done that. I quickly left and went to a place that cared. I ran three all-files virus checks, on top of the on-access scan, since having this problem I am puzzled by this statement. I don't believe that there is anything to find for the worm except for maybe some registry entries. The first changed your webpage and I could see something catching that, but not an anti-virus. The third put a root.exe and maybe the anti-virus companies are looking for that now. However, I would rely on anti-virus to protect me from a Worm. You shut the door. I've rebooted twice (which should have taken care of Code Red if it had been an issue) No, only if you run the patch and then reboot. I've also ran the Code Red scanner, all to no avail. Don't know which one here, but most of then simply check if you are vulnerable, not if you are already hit. You are asking for help here and the best advice that I think any of us could give you is to first get up to date. Even if we are wrong and it isn't Code Red, there is still a real good chance that the SPs and HFs could help here. If I had to guess if you called PSS, that is where they would take you first also. BTW, if you are running this on Compaq hardware, tell me. There is a bluescreen gotcha on some of the platforms. JayW [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/20/01 03:24PM It can't be Code Red... Not patched (not my choice, people higher up make decisions I can't argue with) doesn't mean totally abandonned. I update the McAfee virus scan definition list whenever a new comes out, I have GroupShield running on Exchange (updated just as lovingly), I ran three all-files virus checks, on top of the on-access scan, since having this problem, I've rebooted twice (which should have taken care of Code Red if it had been an issue) and I've also ran the Code Red scanner, all to no avail.
