Firewall Recommendation

2008-10-31 Thread Jim S. Walters
Hello, we have a Checkpoint firewall that is coming up for maintenance
renewal and the price is going up and up and finding qualified
consultants to assist with upgrades is getting harder and harder.

I'm very satisfied with the firewall itself, but feel it's time to
review what other people are using.

Our needs are simple, we have one office with 160 users now but expect
to open other offices in the future. We have a dozen or so remote users
who VPN in. We have a half dozen machines in the DMZ for various uses
and use RSA for authentication.

What firewall systems are you using and which would you buy if you had
the opportunity to start fresh?

Thanks

Jim Walters

Firewall Systems

2008-07-23 Thread Jim S. Walters
I'm in the process of reviewing our firewall for possible conversion to
another system.

While we have been quite happy with the service our Checkpoint Firewall
has provided over the years, the continued maintenance price increases
leave me wondering if I'm getting a good value for the cost.

While never having issues with breaches and the like is priceless, I
thought I'd see what firewall systems other people use and which ones
they are happy with.

Other than supporting some mobile and remote users via VPN, a DMZ with
internet accessible servers and the ability to support a future remote
office, our needs are fairly modest.

Any comments would be welcome.

RE: Lotus Notes to Exchange conversion

2008-07-11 Thread Jim S. Walters
Ditto on Quest's Notes Migrator software. We used it some years ago and
it worked flawlessly. I believe this is the one:

Look at Quest Migrator to move mail. We used a product from Casahl to
move Notes DB's into SharePoint...

We have over 1000+ users and need not just to convert nsf files to pst.
We
need a product robust enough to convert things like contacts, calandars,
databases, etc.

Depends what you're migrating (Mail, Apps)

Depends on the complexity of what you're migrating

Depends on how much you want OOB and how much elbow grease you want to
put
in yourself.

Microsoft has free tool (dunno if it's only available for partners, but
it's free to sign up as a partner). Quest has a good paid-for tool. We
(Avanade) have a much more sophisticated multi-threaded tool that runs
alongside the Quest tool. And so on.

All depends on what you want to do, and how quickly you want to do it.
:-)

Cheers
Ken
