I haven't seen a simpler set of docs then the reskit.
Setting up a secure, well performing website, and or Win2k network is
not something you should do if you require one of those "... for idiots"
books. Pick it up, you'll be amazed at how well written, ands easy to
understand the reskit is...

Anyone have experience (and are willing to share it) with setting up a
drive mirror with W2k, it is quite different than NT. Environment is :

1.2 GHz W2K Srv PDC, (2) WD 40GB drives, ATA-100 support is built into
the MB(Soyo).

White papers, How-tos are what I am looking for, what I have found so
fare has not been especially helpful.

The problem I am having is trying to get the second drive to "mirror"
the first drive, the OS is installed on Disk One as "basic" (it fails to
boot if I do a configuration "upgrade" of it). Disk two wants to setup
"Volumes", Disk one wants to set up partitions.

Hey All,
In a test lab we just setup an AD box with ISA installed, we are
trying to create a user and it won't allow us. It gives this error:

Windows cannot set the password for USERX because:
The password does not meet the password policy requirements. Check the
minimum ..ect

I've check all the policies in the default group policy changed them and
forced the GP refresh with "secedit" and still we aren't able to create
users. Does this have anything to do with our ISA installation, I would
think not but my brain is fried today so I could use some help.

Go to the property pages of TCP/IP on your LAN settings and there should

"Act as master browser", or some related syntax, is chosen by default on

that way the Win 98 machines will never win the browse election process.

Hello,

My IIS4 server has been behaving strangely for the
past four days. It is not a mission-critical unit (yet) as it runs only the
users' default home page when they start IE though it was supposed to go live
in a week as the IIS for OWA. On to the problem...

All IIS services (NNTP, FTP, HTTP) are stopped. I
click on one of them at random and hit Start. Nothing happens. I click Start
again after a few seconds. The service in question will start and function
normally, however anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes later, it'll stop again. There
is no message in the log file other than a notice in the Security log that the
IIS account logged in and out at start/stop.

Besides IIS, that box is running Win NT 4 SP6a Server
(no patch) and Exchange 5.5 SP1 (no patch) and it acts as the BDC.

I've roamed through the Microsoft KB (not easy, what
keywords do you use to describe this when there's no message in the log) to no

Regardless of codered,
the list of bug fixes from your state till now is huge. If you called PSS and

guessing! As for your Mcafee, why don’t you
schedule Auto updates! Eliminates you maybe not knowing about a virus after its to late!

Gotta love management like that, sometimes I
think they do stuff like that just to make sure they got a thumb in the pie,
even though they don’t know S@$t anyway. Tell’m if they want the systems running right, let
you run’em right. If they want it to remain

I not "comfortable" with any product - MS,
Symantec, or otherwise. I don't
trust any of them and always try to
get a second opinion when dealing with
critical things - hence my
problems.

I am still testing the situation on these servers
because I am not positive
there has been an infection. I am
punishing my self but I do not want to
take a chance that can be avoided.
But I also do not want to disrupt
operations of the site and to get a
hold of users to reset passwords if I
can avoid it.

I have duplicated the problem on another box that is
totally hose-able
without a second thought - so it
has been rebooted and unplugged from the
network. It is hosting a copy of
the websites the other one had. I am
going to leave it running and
isolated to see if the tool from Symantec will
generate a positive again. If so
then I will feel confident that these are
false.

The main server has had an in place upgrade of
Advanced Server which
solved a couple of other issues
that server was having; as stated in my
first post, I already had a trouble
ticket open with PSS regarding problems
assigning permissions. Re-service
packed and re-hot fixed. Will monitor it
and decide what to do based on the
test server results.

I will play around with that clean MS up tool on the
test server if it
proves infected. Might be fun. If
the Big one is infected a format and
reinstall will be my only option.
Can't chance that one.

Thought this problem was fairly interesting and
appreciate the help but I
will shut up if you guys want.

Hello week-enders,

I installed RAS in order to enable a remote user to
use her modem (read, I'm scrambling to survive the Rhythms shutdown) on a WinNT
SP6a PC. After reboot, the keyboard and PS/2 mouse were inoperative. Connecting
to the logs from a different PC, I found out that the following three
devices/services wouldn't load at start-up (error message 7026) : kbdclass,
lmoufltr, mouclass. I tried rebooting in VGA mode or with the last known good
hardware config, neither helped, nor did it do any difference when I rebotted
the machine with the mouse and keyboard unplugged.

The user "lost" the ERD (or in clearspeak,
never bothered to do one despite my instructions). Anyone has a suggestion
that'd let me revive this PC without reinstalling NT. I'm thinking reinstalling
SP6 may solve the problem, but how do I do that when the keyboard and the mouse
are inoperative ?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Code Red Got me

backups, you do mean *system* backups that aren't safe,
right? I mean, both my email and sql servers were hit with this (according to
eEye's scanner, which show them both as infected after application of the MS
patch and reboot). I assume I can still load back my actual *data* (email, database, user
files) without restoring any actual system files, and be safe, right?

My hope is
obviously that I won't need to reinstall these servers, but it doesn't look
good.

I know I patched this server but I am not
taking any more chances.

Hello Folks -

It appears one of my servers got the
backdoor worm - I can scan it sometimes and it shows clean and other times a memory
scan shows an infection.  There is no root.exe file anywhere on the server
so I am not totally convinced but I prefer not to take chances.

I have disabled the www service for now
and am backing up my data.  I am wondering if there is a way to recover my
SAM database without running a risk of re-infection?  I can recreate it
but it would add hours to this and I would prefer not to.  Since I do not
know when the infection took place I am not sure of a reliable pre-infection
backup so I am not even going to attempt that route.

Would an ERD made today have the
SAM?  Should I trust it if it does?

The server is a P111 with 2 gigs of ram
Win2k SP2 Sql 7 IIS 5 - web server - no standalone - no domain.

Service packs (at least SP2 did anyway and I assume from now on) come as
msi files that you can just assign to OUs.

Don't know about hotfixes, never done those with group policies.

Is there something else I can use? I need to hook this
thing up so it will stay on:) But I willmost likely take the suggestions of the
group and jsut buy a DSL router as that will supposedly keep the connection on.
If it loses connection it will jsut do reconnect attempts.

I dont know of that but any such
program but a Linux boot disk can mount both ext2 as well as Fat partitions
enabling you to transfer data to a DOS readable partition if that is your goal
there is one for my Tivo that I use that you can download here:

Ya, I got a driver to see the disk when installed in a nt box, but I
wanna access the drive from a floppy when in dos. I recovered the file I
needed by writing it to a dos floppy, but when I have more data, I would
like to boot to a dos disk, load a nic driver, and pound it down the
net!

Try searching for "linux explorer"..

RE: Restoring DNS?

2001-08-14 Thread Joe Casale

Good idea, the file is left alone.
That's a good quick backup method also, the .DNS files for non AD
domains can be easily copied. This kind of a restore is fast, and
unobtrusive.

You can also just create a new zone, give it the exact same zone name...
and
viola... the zone is re-created...

also.. the .dns files are in \WINNT\system32\DNS

display the computername and username below the "My Computer" Icon -
we have implemented this on all our NT4 boxes and now we are starting to
move to Win2K - I'm sure I've seen the hack somewhere but can't seem to find
it. can anyone save me a sad lonely night in front of my Laptop searching

Is there a disk like the old 98 boot disk that can fdisk, format, and
scandisk a ntfs drive?

I hate having to wait 30 minutes to run through the 4 windows2000 boot

just to format a drive.
