RE: Anyone using GFI WebMonitor?

We switched from Iprism to the Sophos web appliance a few weeks ago and it’s
been pretty good thus far.

We are currently using an iPrism for content filtering and we’re looking at
possible alternatives. Is anyone using WebMonitor from GFI? Opinions? Any other
products you like better for content filtering?

RE: Outlook 2010 and Citrix Presentation Server 4

2012-03-30 Thread John Leto
Do your users have large .PST files?
We had a similar issue but only with users that had large .PST files that had
to attach over the network when logging into Citrix.
The users with no or very small .PST files had no issues.
The issue only arose when we upgraded Outlook to 2010 on the Citrix servers.

Subject: Outlook 2010 and Citrix Presentation Server 4

Hi all,

I wonder if someone can help please. We upgraded our Citrix servers to Outlook
2010 a few months ago without issue. However lately we have been experiencing
hanging and latency with Outlook and Outlook only - all of the other office
apps and other apps work fine.

The servers are a decent spec and under-utilised, and we only have around 20
users maximum logged on to Citrix at any one time, and Outlook via RDP works
fine. I created a test farm and have been increasing the number of users I
invite to test and we are again experiencing latency once again - new server,
new farm but still PS4 and Outlook 2010.

I have trawled the forums for advice and although there is talk of an issue
with Outlook 2010 and Xenapp and a hotfix for Outlook 2007, there does not
appear to be anything concerning PS4.

Upgrading to XenApp would be my next step but budget for this year will not
allow it. Has anyone come across and resolved this issue before?

Many thanks,
Mark

RE: Carolina BBQ Sauce (was Re: Proxy server and ISA)

2012-03-14 Thread John Leto
That sounds excellent. One question, you mention the temp of your smoker. Do
you use a regular dial temp gauge or did you upgrade to a digital one that you
can set at the cooking grate?
I ask this because if you use a digital thermo set at the cooking grate versus
a dial gauge towards the top of the smoker you can notice anywher from a 10-50
degree temp difference. The digital thermo is a lot more accurate and also
measures the heat where the food actually cooks at, the grate, not the top of
the lid.

As a side note another nice thing about the digital thermo is most come with a
remote control so that if you stray too far from your smoker for a bit you
don't have to worry about temp spikes. I spent about 20.00 for mine.

Dry rub, sometimes inject with Apple cider, smoke 240 degrees until it's done.
Put it in a cooler wrapped in a towel for half our or so, then pull it.
Because I like it, I then mix in a middle NC vinegar/pepper sauce, but it is
quite good without it. The reason for 240 vs the advertised best temp of 225
is simply because my smoker seems to have a natural tendency to settle at a
steady 240.

Those are pretty nice but if you'd like something just as nice for about half
of the money you might look into a WSM which is a Weber Smokey Mountain. It's a
bullet style smoker set up pretty much just like the green egg.
It does an excellent job, easy to use and again it's about half the price.

M not in this part of Texas (DFW area) maybe more south of here.
In this area is more about hickory smoked flavor, a pepper based dry rub and if
and that's a big IF you use sauce a thin pepper based one but not much of it.
And as far as cuts, in this area pork ribs (spares and baby backs), brisket,
and chicken rule.
On weekends when I am not on call for work I normally fire up my offset smoker
and my bullet style smoker and load them both up with ribs and brisket. Just a
little charcoal to start off and then all hickory or pecan wood for flavor. It
goes all low and slow at about 220 degrees for anywhere from 8-12 hours.

Saucing is an individual choice. Some cuts need a sauce. I prefer a peppery
brisket without additional sauces. I like my pulled pork to have a bit of
sauce because that smoke can really penetrate the fat, so a nice vinegar sauce
helps to cut that down just a bit, so i don't feel like I'm eating shredded
wood (in flavor, not texture).

BBQ=low and slow. Sauces are what come after the 'cue is done.

How many PC's are you or did you upgrade?

I'm sure I will end up calling them. It's always the same: they look at my
config, it's correct, yet we have too many PCs that either fail to upgrade or
don't fully upgrade, leaving the PCs in an unprotected state.

It's not PC-specific, just an issue I've seen on recent Vipre upgrades.

Part of it might be the smaller MSI, but that's an issue where you have your
console server at HQ and your remote PCs are at remote locations. I wish there
were a mechanism where I could run and install *with* current updates from a
USB, for example.

I really like Vipre but major rev upgrades are a pain.

Vipre has the tools to do agent installs, either from a fresh start or for
upgrades. If it’s not working right, why not call their support as soon as the
problem occurs. Our experience has been that their support bends over
backwards to resolve the issues.
Another way to look at it is, if the same PCs that had a problem with a
previous upgrade had it again, maybe it’s not Vipre, maybe it’s a problem with
the PCs

Yes, and I might be calling. I think these are PCs that had a problem with the
upgrade from 4 to 5. I see it every time: agent uninstalls as part of the

I have a script that I push via GPO to force an install, so I better get that

Hi Folks,

For you Vipre users, any of you having issues over the last few days with Vipre
not catching viruses? We've had at least a dozen PCs we had to re-image over
the last week. The vipre console indicates the agent is shut down, and it
won't start.

This wasn't a problem for us until we went to agent 5.0.4464, and as usual, a
bunch of PC were left without protection because the install removed the old
product, never installed the new product. Just wondering if this version is
problematic.

I've finally gotten a budget to put in place a web filtering platform. I've
looked at three so far: Websense, iPrism and Barracuda. Of those, I like
Websense but it was too costly and no one liked Barracuda. iPrism is looking
good so far but I'd like to demo a few more.
I'm not opposed to a cloud-based service either.
If you are using a web-filtering product, can you tell me what it is and
whether you feel it is worth the price you pay?
I've been reading some reviews on different products, but a review is secondary
to what actual users experience.

Is this a possible false positive from Vipre?? It just seems strange that I'd

Greetings!

At home, my PC is in the same room with two kitty litter boxes. (Well, it's a
crappy machine anyway, right?)

The monitor is a flatscreen with a matte finish. The kitty litter tends to
put out a LOT of dust. (Even at the office, though, dust on similar monitors
becomes an issue.) It is now like trying to see through a couple of layers of
wax paper.

What have folks found that does a decent job of getting these sceens clean
again?

Thanks!

Plenty of variation available with whether you make your BBQ from whole

For about $150 I did get a decent smoker from Walmart that's lasted 3
or 4 years outside so far, great for smoked pork butt and pork shoulder
( NOT the same cut here ), also good for sausage, salmon, chicken,
turkey, and makes a GREAT smoked standing prime rib roast !!!

RE: Enough Please (WAS: RE: What's Your Phone?) [OT]

2011-01-05 Thread John Leto
Come on tell the truth Jeffery and Mary Jane are really one person.

From: VIPCS [mailto:vi...@stny.rr.com]
Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2011 12:28 PM
To: NT System Admin Issues
Subject: RE: Enough Please (WAS: RE: What's Your Phone?) [OT]

Michael,

Yours is one of the few well-reasoned and intelligent responses to Jeffrey's
post.

As with any mailing list, there will be a certain amount of noise as someone
else put it, and that comes with the nature of a mailing list. However, when
the mailing list is dominated by people posting first about phones, which then
devolves into cooking, the noise factor becomes too great, in Jeffrey's NSHO.
(And for the record, Jeffrey does enjoy cooking, but this is again, in his
opinion, not the place to discuss that). And when the cooking frenzy dies
down, no doubt something else will come along to replace it.

Jeffrey is pleased by some of the responses that people have posted for Windows
problems (even though they are not directly relevant to work he is currently
doing), and he has save some of those responses for future reference. There
are some very intelligent and helpful people on this list.

Nevertheless (again, in Jeffrey's NSHO), no one on the list should have to
filter a significant number of posts or set up rules or exclusions to get past
the chaff to find the on topic posts.

Good bye to all.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey and Mary Jane Harris

Marked [OT] as I always do, when topic goes OT. You'll find that most of the OT
messages were, indeed, marked OT. Your email program should make it easy for
you to create a rule to delete OT messages.

I was, of course, one of the offenders today, and make no apologies for that.

I once felt the way you do - and, in fact, resigned from the list for a few
months because of it. But the value of the list drew me back.

I've been on this list, except for that few month absence, since 1999. This is
a community. I've made some great friends from this list. I've shared a lot of
drinks and dinners at conferences with people on this list. My largest customer
of the last five years contacted me from this list. Sometimes - we go OT. Just
like NBA Fever or World Cup Soccer Fever can overtake the water cooler in
an office. I don't regard it as a big deal. Your mileage may vary.

I do encourage everyone else - when a topic goes OT, mark it [OT].

I have been using it for the past 3 years, with 500+ seats, Haven't had
any major issues outside of a bad Def once which caused CPU issues with
some XP machines.

The latest client is pretty decent resource wise across W7 and XP
machines, I have the Remote piece on my laptop as the other admins and
the Server is a very small footprint resource Virtual machine have had
zero issues on that part.

Config wise it's a slight steep learning curve to get all the features
working the right way but once you do it's pretty much set it and forget
it, the CFG is an XML base file which is easy to replicate and you can
push different versions to your clients.

Overall I've been pretty happy since we migrated off Symantec.

RE: IE update strangeness

I had the exact same issue. The fix is to download and run Microsoft
Installer Cleanup Utility. Worked for me on three different machines
with this issue.

Yeah... IE6 still works, once I uninstall it, but IE7 is a no-go. Has
your sister tried scanning with Vipre Rescue and/or Malware Bytes and/or
SpyBot SD? Several of the links I checked suggested that Malware may
have gotten installed, so that it is corrupting the install. I plan on
scanning the user's laptop when he goes to lunch today.

Strange you should mention this, because I have just been emailing my
sister-in-law about a similar issue. Her IE would only open for a second
and then disappear. Tried loads of Google suggestions about resetting IE
to defaults, removing it and reinstalling - no joy. I reinstalled XP on
the laptop, and guess what - the issue came back after about a day. I am
totally at a loss to explain it and resorted to introducing her to
Firefox. Unfortunately Windows Live Messenger seems not to play well
with IE in this state, but it's one of the few unsolved mysteries I've
had in my IT career.

cleanly and whenever we try to launch IE after upgrading, it will flash
and put a shortcut on the desktop, but refuses to open an IE window. All
my research suggests that something is causing a corrupt install, and
I've run just about every test I can, short of running a malware scan (I
don't want to tie up the laptop that long while the user is trying to
get some work done, I'll run a scan while the user is at lunch!)

You're not just kidding. I sat on hold for 1 hour between 2-3 yesterday and
finally gave up and left a message to call me back. I received a call back at
8PM.

Supports response is slightly different from the message that repeats over and
over extolling how important your call is and we will be right with you as we
understand that when you call you need support now!

Needless to say the lack of a response while at the customers did not go over
big with them and now they are contemplating switching to another vendor when
their subscription expires.
