The problem stems from the fact that what actually happened is
this: I got a Starband satellite receiver and had to use the
existing, built-in NIC for it. I did that and got it working. Then
 I
bought a NetGear card and set it for the network. It was recognized
just fine and works, but it seems to have toasted the network. The
server is Win2k Server, the workstations are Win2k Professional, all
with all patches and Service Packs.

Maybe I should simply remove the workstations from Computers in
the server and then rename the workstations and rejoin the domain?

When I log on to the domain now, it takes a number of minutes and
My Computer hangs. I can't access the shares.

You really don't want your users to have 'Power User' privileges. I
 would
suggest you install the applications and then apply the 'compatws'

 would
not normally run unless the user was part of the Power User group and
protects your registry and other system files from people who like to
 'snoop' around.

.. I'm a little confused as to your configuration? Are all the
   servers/workstations 2000? RunAS is a service on 2000 which
could be stopped and set to manual to start. However, if the
user has privileges to restart this does no good and why I suggest
a policy to disable. If the user has a valid account he/she
shouldn't have to use connect as or run as if you have security
set properly. The only way to stop reinfecting your servers
is to disable all shares until the users computers are virus' free
which I doubt you can achieve. Users tend to scream when they can't
get to information. Guess I need to hear more information.

how do you create a policy on a rougue computer,or passthrough

if they are connecting, and have valid ID and pwd it shouldn't matter
 what
app provides it. I thought the password prompting (through dialog,
 runas,
or connectas) was local to the workstation.

would you set a policy on the server machine to not allow network
connections, or not allow that user?

 Wondering,
 Dan

Our network was hit with the Nimba virus. All of the computers in
 our
control are protected. Rouge computers, however, can map to our
  drives
using the 'connect as', 'connect using different user name', or
passthrough authentication. These rouge computers keep writing the
  virus
  back up to our shares.

Is there any way to prevent this?

RE: cannot ping by name

2001-09-11 Thread Kent Spencer

.. you may want to check your node type. h-node, p-mode, b-node etc
to see how resolution is being performed. Depending on which, the
DNS server may not even get queried. Do an ipconfig/all to see
what it is set to. If IP's are being assigned by dhcp, you'll want
to also set the node type.

Kent

--- Mark Brackett [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Possible causes:
 1. You're not using DNS at all, but broadcast resolution. Some
 servers
 aren't on the same subnet.
 2. The NT 4.0 DNS server doesn't have entries for the host name, and
 is
passing the requests to WINS. Some servers aren't listed in the
 WINS
 database.
 3. HOSTS/LMHOSTS resolution
 4. ***Probable cause*** our trying to ping with just a host name,
 and your
connection suffix is either different than your DNS server's entries
 or
you're not appending the suffix. Try pinging the full server name.
 Then
 check the LAN Connection/DNS properties.

 Hi guys,

From one particular server, I cannot ping some servers by name. I
 can ping
the same servers by IP address or I can do nslookup. I am sure it is
 not
 name
servers issue because all other machines can ping any machine by name
 or IP
address on the network. I also checked the DNS entry on that
 particular
server, everything looks right. Any thought on this? You can be
 sarcastic!!
 I
don't mind. By the way, this is the only 2000 server on an NT

 that
 makes any difference!.

subordinate CA to the Stand Alone Root CA. I've tried both ways with

Remote user connected with VPN password expires/is about to expire
User presses ctrl-alt-del, select change password

A couple days later the same user calls me back and says his password
 isn't
 working.
Upon troubleshooting, I've determined it was the first time the user
 has
rebooted his system. It's now at the login prompt. He presses
 ctrl-alt-del,
uses his OLD password, logs in, and then needs to authenticate with
 our VPN
 using his NEW password.

We've had this problem since we've installed NT/2000, really. With
 dial-up
 users as well.
It seems changing the password remotely does not change the client
 machine's
cached profile. This is really a burden. Advice welcome.

I have one NT4 SP6 server with 2 sets of mirrored hot swappable hard

Each set has one 9.1Gb and one 17Gb. I will need to upgrade the 17Gb
 ones to
181Gb as I need to place a 70Gb SQL data base on them. Machine is
 live and
has to be like that for the maximum time possible. This big drive
 also
contains software installations and file permissions are set as well.

The idea is to break the mirror, take one drive out, place it on
 another
system in parallel with the new 181Gb and restablish the mirror.
 This will
generate a 17Gb partition on the 181Gb HD, then I would use a
 partitioning
tool to grow it to 181Gb.

Someone told me to do a file copying and that is it. No partition
 growth
necessary... I doubt it is going to work.

Have you had any experience like this? Do you know any good partition
expander software. (Drive Copy goes only up to 80Gb)

Re: Website Slow then falls over

.. sounds like maybe a memory leak problem. Have you monitored
your memory resources? Also, how much RAM and how much pagefile
   space?
Kent

--- Paul Broomfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hello,

We’re getting a problem on one of our web servers.

 Here’s the set-up:

 Web Server:
 Dell Power Edge 2450
 Win2k SP2
 IIS 5
Norton Antivirus – set-up to avoid the scanning global.asa, (as
 opening the
global.asa can causing site to stop responding)

 Database Server
 Dell Power Edge 2450
 Win2k SP1 (I’m applying SP2 shortly)
 SQL 2000

The web server has a direct connection to the web with no firewall.
 The
database server connects to the web server via a secondary network
 card in
the web server and on a separate IP network and hence hiding the DB
 server
 from the outside world.

The web server has 3 sites on it all running different versions of
 the same
site with 3 different versions of our custom built ActiveX component.
 The 3
sites include - one Live, one customer trial site and one in-house
 demo/dev
site. The customer is testing new developments on the customer trial
 site,
and their customers are using the live site.

The sites work fine and then after a while they will slow and
 eventually
stop responding. The server requires a full restart to get it
 working
again, Inetinfo sits near the bottom of the process list not really
 doing
anything and not using a great deal of memory. I can’t see anything
 in the
process list that is battering the servers’ resources.

We have regressed any new developments we put into the trial site
 before
these problems started to happen, in case it was any strange code
 making the
 server crash.

The last weird thing that happened before the sites started playing
 up, was
the web server reported an out of virtual memory error. The websites
stopped working, the server then reallocated memory then came back to
 life,
allowing users to access the sites again. One thing we noticed after
 this
is that all dates changed to American format rather than United
 Kingdom
format – so we changed these back and restarted the server for good
 measure.

Looking through the Event Viewer there is nothing too unusual in
 there apart
from an error saying the SSL is screwed, it really says: “A fatal
 error
occurred while creating an SSL server credential”, although the
 client has a
certificate protected site it is not used. Another error we seem to
 be
getting is script timeouts, but these don’t correlate with server
 crashes.

We do get lots of CodeRed hack attempts but I patched the server when
 the
hotfix first came out from MS.

Does anybody have any ideas? As I am running out of them.

 Thanks
 Paul

p.s. if the client had a bad connection to the server that dropped
regularly, (due to their overloaded network) could that cause a
 server not
to clear sessions and “get confused” and eventually fall over – I’m
 clutching at straws now.

Pps. A virtual luxury apartment anywhere in the world that you want

 Kent,

I appreciate your help. I believe, however, that I may have
 mis-stated
the situation. Let's see if I can attempt this again.

 1. I know I can use the Make Available Offline function in the
properties of the NT4 SHARE on a WIN2000 CLIENT.
 2. I know there is no cache option on the network share residing on
 an
 NT4 Server.

You said, You can only make NT 4.0 folder available offline from the
Windows 2000 client. My question is not whether I can use the make
available offline feature on the share. You and I agree you can do
that. This is only one half of the equation however. The other half
 is
to configure the caching function on the NETWORK SHARE in question.
The fact that it physically resides on an NT4 Server means you can't
 do
 it, period.

I was simply asking if there is a workaround or whether I was missing
something. In summary - W2K server share and W2K client, you can do
offline files/folders. With NT4 Server share and W2K client - so far
 I
have to suemise that it's not possible.

 Appreciate your response Kent,

The second drive has no trouble becoming dynamic,

The first drive (where MBR etc are located), fail to boot after I
 convert it
 to dynamic.

How can the the drive be dynamic w/o first installing the OS.

BTW - (Hardware raid is not in the pocketbook for the rest of the
 fiscal
 year.)

. Was this a build from scratch or upgrade? Here's some info
but you'll need to get to dynamic on both to have them both
bootable IIRC in W2K. Kent

Anyone have experience (and are willing to share it) with setting
 up
   a drive
mirror with W2k, it is quite different than NT.
   Environment is :

1.2 GHz W2K Srv PDC, (2) WD 40GB drives, ATA-100 support is built
   into the
   MB(Soyo).

White papers, How-tos are what I am looking for, what I have
 found so
   fare
   has not been especially helpful.

The problem I am having is trying to get the second drive to
 mirror
   the
first drive, the OS is installed on Disk One as basic (it fails
 to
   boot if
I do a configuration upgrade of it). Disk two wants to setup
   Volumes,
Disk one wants to set up partitions.

Does anyone know where one can find a utility (or an active novell listserv) to export users/groups/scripts from a NW4.11 box and then import into NW5.0 ??? Can it be done with native netware or do you have to have some third party stuff... found some stuff on groupwise, ldif. bulkload etc. but does not appear to be what I'm looking for.
