Please see the email below is that fake or what?

Heads up.

 WORST EVER VIRUS (CNN announced)

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST !!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft
as
 the most destructive ever!

This virus was Discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine
has
 yet been developed.

This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital
information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to
all
contacts on your list with the title A Virtual Card for You.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so
that
 the user has to reboot.

When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus
destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk.

Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York,
according
 to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft. So don't open any
mails
with subject: A Virtual Card for You. As soon as you get the mail,
delete it.

Please pass this mail to all of your friends. Forward this to everyone in
 your address book.

I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered
 recently.

If you receive an email called An Internet Flower For You, do not open
it.

Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll
files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up !!

Thanks in advance,

First of all thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Let me
clarify my situation. Using the same version of Outlook 2k on a
NT4 WS (SP6a) or Win 2k Pro Sp2, I can view the attachments on the NT 4
WS but not on the Win 2k Pro computer. I've also tried using Outlook XP,
  still a no go.

  The
bottom line is, I can view attachments under NT 4 but not Win 2k. I was
told by another NA that this is a lovely "feature" of Win 2k. My
question is, is there a workaround for this? We'll soon be migrating all
of the workstations except 1 to Win 2k from NT 4 WS. I'd hate to disturb
our one user who has the NT 4 machine every time some one needs to view an
  "unsafe" attachment.

  Thanks for all the pointers.

Hi
Kim,
I've been using w2k with Office 2000 and Exchange 5.5 for awhile now,
since the beta of win2k and the release of O2k, attachments show up by
default. If you're exchange server is less than sp3 for exchange 5.5,
update that. Also, MS released an Outlook client for Exchange 5.5 sp3
specifically, check your technet subscription if you have one. I would
patch Office 2k up to sr2 if you don't have access to this. Is it
possible that on your exchange server someone configured a mailbox limit or
attachment size limit that you're not aware of? I know our Exchange
server (before sp3) would not always keep the information store defaults on
max size limits for all mailboxes. Occasionally, a user would have a
different limit than others, even though his/her mailbox was set to use the
IS defaults. Also, Norton Antivirus Corporate edition with exchange
support enabled will do this on the client side. If this is suspect,
uninstall norton and reinstall without exchange support enabled, all virus
scanning will still take place, read symantec's details for more, don't know
the link off the top of my head. Good Luck.

Quick question. Is there an easy way to
enable attachments in Outlook 2000/Exchange 5.5 in Win 2k Pro? The
attachments are viewable under NT 4 and Outlook 2k/Exchange
5.5.
I know Win 2k disables the ability to view
attachments such as *.mdb, *.exe, etc. It simplifies our lives
considerably to email things from client sites back to the office via
email and its getting to be a pain because the Win 2k Pro WS won't allow
  us to view the attachments.

Is anyone aware of a way to turn a simple script (.cmd / .bat)
into a coded
.exe?

Let me give some background. I have several scripts I need to
schedule to
run on a system that has the console locked. Using
WinAT/Scheduler I can get
the script to run and process just fine. Now, in my script I
am making a
call to map to d$ on one of my servers, which probably isn't
the greatest
idea, but that's just the way it is at the moment. If the
console is not
locked, this script goes off without a hitch, but when the
console is locked
(which I need it to be) the script pauses, waiting for the password to
access the d$ share as administrator (I assume)...what gives?

I was thinking I could just pass the authentication
information via the .cmd
file if I could code it as an executable, I just don't want
the login/pass
sitting out there in plain text. The coded .exe would give me
some sort of
warm fuzzy and at least allow me to move on to more pressing issues...

TIA!

Strange, I aborted 3 attempts as I was never offered the
opportunity to do
a customized install. I know that's how I did it on the
previous few IE
downloads. However, I ran the app, looked over all the dialog boxes,
clicked the license agreement, and -POOF!- it appeared to have started
doing the install.

For others with similar experiences, does it download several files
_before_ offering the chance for a custom install? (Like I
said, I aborted
the process after it appeared to be doing a regular install.)

No need for a command line, run the install file in place, select
customised install and then select full download, install later under
advanced after selecting all opsys's you want to install to.

thing that wasn't so clear was how to invoke a corporate
download only
version of the setup. After some diggin, here is the syntax to run
after you download the ie6setup.exe file.

download folderie6setup.exe /c:ie6wzd.exe /d /s:E#

Sorry about the cross posting.

We don't have a lot of specifics on it, but there appears to be a new
worm on the loose. The payload is a typical Melissa-style worm, where
its only action is to send mail to all members of the GAL, with the
following
message:
Hi, how are you ? I am fine here. Please read the page
http://pcControl.tripod.com/ to get some knowledge and prevent somebody
hack you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too.

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't
visited the website yet. More info to follow, but there is zero
information on the web about it at this point.

RE: OT E-Mail Disclaimers

2001-08-29 Thread Les Bessant

Lawyers seem to like them. The theory is that if a message says something
that the company would wish to disassociate itself from, the disclaimer[1]
gives some basis for this. I remain unconvinced that it would actually stand
up in court[4]. After all, we don't attach disclaimers when we talk on the
telephone, snail mail leaving the office (while all mail leaving the office
is supposed to be checked by a Partner, this is a procedure that can be
circumvented) does not contain a load of legal tosh

It all started with faxes. For some reason it was deemed necessary to put a
if we sent you this by mistake you must forget you ever saw it and shoot
yourself immediately tag on the bottom. When we started using email,
various PHBs thought we should do the same with email[5]. Then there was the
case where an employee of one mumble insurance company said something or
other in an email about another mumble insurance company, and the second
company sued for libel, and thanks to the UK's libel laws[6] panic set in...

So we have one. I don't think it serves any real purpose other than
satisfying the desires of PHBs to have a disclaimer because everyone else
has one. They're mostly harmless, so long as they don't get too long.

[1] Like mine[2]
[2] It wasn't my idea[3]
[3] I resisted for as long as possible
[4] Depending on local laws
[5] Why? If you send a letter to the wrong address you don't put a label in
saying if we were so dumb as to post this to the wrong place, feed it to
the dog, do you?
[6] Better than the lottery...

Indeed. We have an HP 4500. Not bad, but not fast enough for the surges

We now
