Re: Quickbooks getting slower and slower

2012-09-01 Thread Michael Brummet
We have Quickbooks Enterprise 12 and have the same problems, it slows to a
crawl. I reboot the server, and it's good for another 3 to 4 weeks. it is
the only application on the server, a DL360 G4 with Dual Xeon processors and
2Gb of RAM... Monitoring memory and processor usage, I see no slow increase
in either, it's just a case of "Hey, Quickbooks has slowed down!", I reboot
the server, and "Thank you, Quickbooks is fast again"

I blame it on bad programming on Intuit.

YMMV

I have reservations that the .NET version would effect performance - it
would either break or fix an issue. In my experience, Quickbooks
performance is usually effected by network performance/configuration
settings (typically on the server) - as per the reasons that others have
already sited. I would recommend systematically going through all
configs/service settings to make certain that they are optimal for your
environment. OS filesystem settings should be involved.

Next, I would take a look at the database itself: Size, objects, etc. You
may have reached a performance threshold in the database.

Question: Did the performance issues start to occur after a server update?

So I am not sure it is .NET, but suspecting it *might* have something to do

So I am thinking that Quickbooks has some .NET code in it. Maybe, but, not
a lot of time has been spent on Quickbooks.

Just looking for verification, so I threw it out there.

Found out that Intuit remotely moved Quickbooks from the server (wish I had
known this earlier, lol) to a user's PC in hopes of fixing the problem.
That's the Database Service wasn't running on the server. However, it
wasn't performing any better on the user's workstation either. Doing the
same tasks in a different Quickbooks file such as the sample file, results
in things working as fast as expected. Only when using the company file do
things get slow... So now we're waiting on a response from Intuit's
datamanagement team. Fun.

Thanks for the tips.

The "database service" definitely needs to be running. Even though they
tout they have an "enterprise version" it really isn't a true database
server. So stuff still works but really slow when the "database service"
isn't running.

Not sure where to begin on this - I guess it is possible that I've got two
new (refurbed) drives that are bad, but I'm leaning toward it being a fluke
or known bug or compatibility issue. I've Googled till I'm blue in the
face, and I've searched the archives of this list going back more than a
year. We can't retire this server just yet, and I can't P2V it right now.
We're looking to decommission it this year, and replace it with newer
hardware, so for the moment, I'm stuck with it.

Also, I inherited itit long predated my existence at this company. I had
a drive failure in the RAID1, so I bought two reburb units from a major
channel partner (we are a VAR). The hope was to replace one drive, let it
rebuild, then add the second drive as a hot spare so I wouldn't be in this
bind again. Alas, BOTH of the refurb drives register in the System
Management Homepage with a status of Predictive Failure, Replace Drive. I
know I've read about false positives with S.M.A.R.T. Status under certain
OS/Firmware/Driver/MS Update scenarios, but for the life of me I can't find
anything along those lines right now when I need it. Also, with this being a
COMPAQ branded server, I'm not 100% certain of what I'm looking at on the HP
site, as everything referenced looks like a HP branded server. I wasn't
dealing with HP at the time of the HP Compaq merger, and I never did
anything with Compaq servers...

I welcome any suggestions offered to get this unit functioning without drive
array errors (if that is possible). Having the drive listed as being in a
degraded state doesn't give me any warm fuzzies, and it is unfortunately a
critical server, so I can't just say, "It's probably not really an issue."
Of course, I can't be guaranteed that there is a valid backup of this
server, and even if there is, getting it back online might be practically
impossible, because like I said, it predates me significantly and the
individuals who configured it are no longer with the organization and the
software application is no longer supported. I do have original media, but
I'd rather not go that route if I don't have to

Configuration:

Two 36GB Ultra 320 SCSI Hot Pluggable hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration
with no hot spare (like I said, I inherited it)
Running Windows Server 2000 w/SP4 and all available updates
BIOS Date is 04/02/01 - newest version appears to be 2002.12.18 (B) (23 Mar
2004), but the rev history does not show anything related to SCSI drives or
controllers
ROM Version from the System Management Homepage is 04/02/2001, Family
386P17, Type 03
Storage Controller is listed as "Compaq Integrated Smart Array Controller"
Storage Controller Driver Date/Version is 10/21/2002, 5.14.0.0 Latest
version appears to be 5.14.0.0 (E) (13 Apr 2006) but rev notes don't notate
anything that would implicate a false positive for SMART failure
Storage Controller Firmware version is 1.46A - looks like 1.50B dated 22 Oct
2002 is the latest, but can't find any rev notes that tell me what the fixes
are between 1.46A and 1.50B
Port 2 Drive 0 (listed as healthy) COMPAQ BF036863B5 has firmware version
HPB4 and has service hours total of 63,040 hours - this appears to be the
latest firmware for this drive per HP Document ID: c00776070
Port 2 drive 1 (listed as "Predictive Failure/Replace Drive") COMPAQ
BF0368A4CA has firmware version HPB5 and has service hours

Barracuda and EmailReg.Org

2008-10-28 Thread Michael Brummet
Have any of you run into this?

>From http://zacharyozer.blogspot.com/

Biggest. Spam Scam. Ever.
A few years ago, MIT purchased an anti-spam solution from Barracuda, a firm
specializing in network security products.

I just received an email on one of The Tech's mailing lists about how email
from The Tech's mail server are being rejected by the Barracuda Spam
Filters. I've edited the message, but goes something like this:

 Forwarded Message
From: Mail Delivery System <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender
Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2008 00:00:00 -

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Following the link, you're taken to a page where you're asked to fill out a
form (which includes a CAPTCHA) in order to verify that you're not spamming
people.

Were this where things had ended, I would have forgotten this whole thing.
While I don't necessarily think requiring people to fill out a quick form is
the best way to fight spam, its certainly not completely unreasonable to ask
them to do it once in a while. Extra kudos if they can use some sort of
certificate, signature, etc to bypass it.

However, what follows is one of the most perverted uses of technology and
diabolically brilliant business plans I have ever witnessed.

Lets assume you'd like to avoid being caught by this spam filter in the
future. Barracuda allows you to register with EmailReg.org, an
'organization' which maintains a list of domains and the IP address of their
associated mail server. To sweeten the pot, they allow anyone to query their
database for free in order verify the authenticity of an email.

Many of you are scratching your heads, so let me provide an example. Lets
say that you run Google.com. You register with EmailReg.org and tell them,
'Any email that comes from google.com will have to come from one of our SMTP
servers. Their IP addresses are 1.2.3.4 and 9.8.7.6'. This means that an
email which claims to be from [EMAIL PROTECTED] that didn't come from those IP
address probably isn't actually from someone who works at Google and can
probably be marked as spam. (Note that identity verification is a big part
of spam protection, since spammers often pretend to be someone else, in an
attempt to hide how much mail they're sending.)

What a great idea right? Spam protection that works and is transparent to
users?

Until you realize that they charge $20 to register your domain. Per year.

Effectively, this means that you have to pay $20 per year to send email to
people on domains that use this service to verify email authenticity. This
wouldn't be that big of a deal if EmailReg was the definitive source for
this information, or if they had some new and brilliant technology, or if
there weren't any other good solutions. Instead, EmailReg is nobody, their
product is a whitelist (albeit with two parameters – domain and IP), and
there are a hundred other, perfectly viable anti-spam techniques. Somehow,
they've managed to get a major corporation (Baracuda) on board and they're
now gouging people to send e-mail – something which is supposed to be
free.

I salute the businessman who came up with this idea and the salesman who got
Barracuda on board.

Beyond that, I'm furious.

I’m visiting our Seattle office at the moment. There are two Netapp arrays
here (3000 and 2000 series), for a total of 87 TB of space(320 spindles). I
talked to one of the guys looking after it and he said that the perf was
just as good as the equivalent EMC Clarions, and the management was light
years ahead.

The Netapp stuff must be decent. Of the major oil companies is doing the
largest MOSS implementation in the world at the moment backed by Netapp
storage (around 1PB of storage apparently).

Cheers
Ken

Basically I am doing a SQL 2005 Cluster Environment right now with DL
580G5’s and SAN attached storage to fit about 50-100 databases concurrent.

4 Quad-Core processors, 16GB of RAM, EMC SAN ( DMX 1000), 2 4GB Qlogic
HBA’s. Which is my top tier.

Basically after this well be doing a stand-alone middle tier SQL server
which is a Dual Quad-Core with 8GB of RAM, and SAN disk partitioned out
accordingly. ( RAID 1+0, RAID 1, separate LUN’s etc etc)

Then Low End Testing is DL 380G5 Dual Quad-Core Processor 4GB of RAM, local
SAS 146.8GB 10K, in a RAID 1+0 configuration with different partitions for
each of the functions. ( This is staging)

Once I can get funding for alternative site, it will be duplicated and using
mirroring, or stretch clustering to make site-to-site fault tolerance.

Also: If anyone is using NETAPP storage out there I’d love to hear your
thoughts and experiences on there product line, we are looking for
alternatives to our EMC SAN right now, and there offerings and management
looks awfully attractive.

Thanks
Z

Wow EZ, that's a lot of hardware. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able
to match what they are suggesting, and to be honest, I don't think our
databases need that much horsepower. So, being stuck with what I have, 6
SAS disks, on a single PERC5i controller, I'm looking at my options.
