software raid lost

2008-01-30 Thread Onur Altuntas
Hi,

I'd been using software RAID5 on my 2003 server since a week. Today, i've
installed a new drive to server. After startup, my existing raid
configuration has lost. Now i see 4 dynamic disks without volumes (+ 1 new
disk). Are there any easy way of recovering?

Thanks.

No import disks, no ERD, no backup and yes you're right, its poor planning.

I removed 4th disk but still no change.it sees just 4 dynamic disks without
volumes.

I tried some RAID recovery softwares (raid reconstructer, file scavanger). I
found the correct order of disks and i can see inside my volume also my
files but the recovery process is too long. Software is scanning all bits on
volume (volume size ~1.5 tb) and after 7 hours only %52 percent completed.
Do you know any better solutions?

Thanks.

I agree HW is not perfect either, but what would you rather do, hope for the
best and prepare for the worst knowing that you already set yourself up for
failure, or go with HW and still planning for the worst but being able to
sleep at night knowing your chances of an issue are significantly less. A
raid card is cheap, even for tight budgets.

If you are not doing backups, well that's poor planning and management if
you ask me.

Hardware RAID has its issues too. If there's one rule of IT - it's never say
never :-)

When RAID goes wrong - we rely on backups :-)

Umm..It does not give you an option to import the disk? Do have an ERD?

Did you do anything else other than shut down the server and insert the
drive?

Just for future consideration..Never use Software Raid. Yes I used the word
Never.

You may try removing the 4th disk and see if it finds the unimported volume.

Maybe diskpart. That should be able to create software RAIDs.

Yes SP2, patches are applied regularly.

Subject: DNS high memory issue

Hi. We're having an issue with our MS Server 2003 DNS servers. Sometimes,
dns.exe uses too much memory and starts not answering queries. When i
realize the DNS service failure, i logon to the server and see that dns.exe
uses ~1.5GB memory, then i kill the process. Here is the event log: (also
lots of event id 5501 records)

Here is the event log:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: DNS

Event ID: 7502

Description:

The DNS server was unable to service a client request due a shortage of
available memory. Close any applications not in use or reboot the computer
to free memory.

Our DNS is open to recursive queries and use forwarders. 2gb memory is
placed on server and we've been using these DNS servers for 2 years without
problem. i've search google for memory leak problems but found nothing
useful.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
