RE: File services hangs

2001-09-26 Thread PITNEY,LDENISE (A-Sonoma,ex1)

Hello Steve,

You know, as strange as this sounds I had a problem similar if not exactly
to this and found a fix. The machine kept tanking, and I noticed it seemed
to just get confused but this registry entry fixed the machine and it's been
rock solid ever since.

What I found was that the server was running out of interrupt request
packets (IRP's); the default value is 6 and that just seems to be too low if
the connection volume for the machine is high. Check your event log and look
for IRPSTACKSIZE errors. My server is a high-end HP net server [W2K OS] that
does bit serving for our technical engineering windows-based apps and the
user volume is 150-200 connections a day, 24 hrs a day, from all global
sites in our company.

Okay the fix is to increase the IRPSTACKSIZE buffer, using the registry
editor. Here's the path:
HkeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
So, create a New Dword value with the name IRPStackSize set the value to 11

Also, here's the TechNet article: Changes in IRP Stack Size in Lanman Server
[Q198386]
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q198/3/86.ASP

Good luck and let me know if it works for you.

Best regards,
Denise

Subject: File services hangs

Esteemed Colleagues,

I have a Compaq Proliant 3000 server with a Pentium II 333 Mhz CPU and
128 Mb Ram running NT4.0 SP5. Access to file and print services has
recently started hanging...on a daily basis. When the services hang I can't
even log into the server or connect in any way using naming services. It
has to be manually powered off to reboot. There are no traces of any
problems in the logs. No evidence of Dr. Watson.

I'm Stumped and at a loss of what to even look for in Technet or the
archives. Very baffling.

RE: Why this list is the greatest thing since sliced bread: ] [w as: Get Me Off the List, Please]

2001-09-25 Thread PITNEY,LDENISE (A-Sonoma,ex1)

Clayton, my thoughts exactly.

While the list does 'drift' at times, benefits can still be seen in the
'drifts'. From the 'drifts' I've been able to laugh. I am about to see many
people I know lose their jobs because my company is laying a ton of people
off right now. I really need to laugh. No to mention anybody who doesn't
snicker and think 'they actually pay me to do this' is more than likely not
enjoying their job. We GenXer's know that work and fun are not mutually
exclusive and besides that growing up is so overrated :] Maturity
necessary, acting old optional.

When the list is 'on' it's been able to help me create a personal
knowledgebase from many of the questions/answers that have been and will
continue to be a great asset to increasing my own knowledge. I've also been
able to test my own skill by figuring out an answer and seeing if it matches
any proposed solutions or suggesting a few answers myself.

And a last note, the people on this list are REAL [just like the song says:]
I, for one, enjoy that. I spend my day dancing around peoples feelings and
telling them what they want to hear and it takes it's toll. I've never been
shy with my comments, and some days it helps to just say 'you know, that's
damn dumb' then I can breathe again and face another day.

Thanks to Stu and everyone on this list. I think the list is great and don't
want to see it change, it's got just the right mix of knowledge AND fun ;]

Best regards,

I've been having some problems with a cdrom drive under Windows 2000.
Sometimes when I insert a cd into the cdrom drive it will not get
recognized. I've tried 10 known good cds and none of them will work. (ie
the label and files do not show up in explorer). I then reboot the
machine and try the same 10 cds again and this time they all appear in
explorer. I did some searching and really didn't find much. Any
thoughts?

RE: Problem Connecting to Terminal Server

2001-09-20 Thread PITNEY,LDENISE (A-Sonoma,ex1)

Hi Bill

See if any of these suggestions work for you...

1. Make sure to set the connections allowed number to 3 --that way I get two
complete connections and the third is rejected and you still adhere to the
license reqs.

2. Try dropping the encryption to low. This would be set on the properties
of the RDP-TCP object under Terminal services configuration.

**In remote administration mode no additional licenses are required, you get
2 automatically.

This little "feature" and a few others, cost me an all-nighter, Sunday noon

Single server, 25 user network, ended up blowing it away and loading fresh,
after a pizza and a Guinness about 9 pm. Will now always migrate to
another server, which I had done previously and since.
PS. this Basic versus Dynamic disk business didn't appear in any

WAKE UP!!!!

2001-09-13 Thread PITNEY,LDENISE (A-Sonoma,ex1)

A friend of mine who just had a baby told me "You know they only call it
morning sickness. It actually lasts all day." It's kinda like 'free'dom,
it's not really free that's just what it's called.

Econ 200 Professor Wells, The University of Arizona in Tucson --"There is no
such thing as a free lunch, ..and if you say love...we know you're a
freshman."

The 'free'dom we've had all these years has never been FREE!! Ask anyone
whose served during a war -- personally our 'free'dom has cost me an uncle
(whom I never met), a father who still can't watch war movies and has skin
problems because of agent orange, another uncle who is slightly off, and
let's not forget about taxes; 'free'dom costs me more than 30% a year.

You can_not_have_it_all. It is as simple as supply and demand -- in your
personal life, can you spend all of the money you work for on any whimsical
idea that pops into your head? No, because you will be less; homeless,
clothes-less, penniless but if that is your decision you have the choice to
make it so, but you can not have it both ways. As we've learned recently,
the 'free'dom we all think is 'free' has cost us around $20billion, (I think
that's a low figure too) -- it doesn't include lives either. Please, explain
to the families of those missing or dead why we should not give up any
liberty in exchange for security; you should be able to find their phone
numbers one of the news websites as they were on television last night
making desperate pleas for their loved ones. Terrorist came to our country
and moved about freely, and have turned our own freedoms against us; but we
don't want the FBI to scan email? Claim slippery-slope if you want to, but
something, as compared to nothing (what happened on Tuesday) seems like a
better option at this point.

Don't be confused, it's cost a H*ll of a lot to be free, we just don't
calculate the hidden costs.

Denise

Subject:MORNING OF HORROR

MORNING OF HORROR

By L. Neil Smith

Special to _The Libertarian Enterpise_

First of all, expect never to learn the truth about what happened
at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and elsewhere this morning of
September 11, 2001, any more than we did with regard to the murders of
Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, at Ruby Ridge, Waco, or
Oklahoma City. Ambiguity and uncertainty serve far too many political
interests.

Another certainty is that, although I'm told 50,000 people worked
in the World Trade Center, more innocent individuals will die as a
result of what the Old Media are lovingly referring to as a "lockdown"
of Manhattan and other places, than any acts of terrorism that may have
occurred. The military has just said they'll shoot down any plane they
see flying. Only one civilian plane is in the air this morning, Air
Force One; that's as grim a warning of things to come as I can think
of.

"Collateral" deaths won't just happen as a consequence, say, of
somebody with a heart attack being unable to get to a hospital, but
whenever and wherever some dumb kid in an army uniform gets startled
by a car backfiring and starts spraying everybody and his pet poodle
with automatic rifle fire. Or to whomever the martial lawyers decide
it's safe to liquidate using this foul mess as a cover. Or, vastly
more ominously, to people in the not-so-distant future who decide they
must resist the police state that will inevitably result from these
events.

It's extremely difficult to think coherently about long term
effects, let alone to get it all down in writing, when you learn that,
not only were hijacked commercial aircraft used to commit these
unspeakably evil acts, but that 90 passengers died helplessly in the
first plane, and others yet unnumbered may have died in subsequent
attacks. _Somebody_ has to think about it, though, or this situation
will be used to turn the Bill of Rights off forever. Depending on the
planning behind it, or who did the planning, it may already be too
late.

All airports have been shut down today, and I shudder to think
about what flying will be like from now on. The Clintons, Schumers,
and Waxmans will try to shut down the Internet, calling it a breeding
ground for terrorism. The Bushes and Cheneys will "reluctantly" go
along.

Rush Limbaugh will cheer them on.

What should those who value their freedom do? Every chance you
have, from this moment on, whether it's on talk radio, or on the
letters to the editor page, on the Internet while it's still possible,
or in communication with everyone you know -- it's time for even the
most apolitical to write to senators and congressmen -- emphasize two
points:

First, inform them that closing down the First or Second or any
other Amendment is not an appropriate response to what's happened, and
that any politician or bureaucrat in office who attempts to capitalize
on today's horrors is committing the same sort of blatantly criminal
act I've always insisted must be punished under Bill of Rights
enforcement.

Second, these things happen to nations with imperial ambitions.
There has never been a major act of terrorism I know of that hasn't
resulted from an act of government that violated somebody's rights. The
way to keep this sort of thing from happening again is to stop those
violations.

Hideously enough, my new novel _The American Zone_, scheduled to
be published next November by Tor Books, begins with an act very
similar to this one, carried out to force the creation of a strong

Let's see, the last time I checked the San Jose paper a data center
administrator made 80k and programmers are much more sought after than that.
You may be looking at upper 80's to start depending on your experience; the
softening job market has lowered salaries somewhat, but you should still
fare well if you have the experience.

Just remember, most of what you earn will go for transportation and
housing--a few grand sometimes for an a_part_ment, not to mention a house.

Subject: Silicon Valley salary

Once the authorities get around to processing visa applications again, and
once the airports reopen, my employer is planning to move me from its UK
office here in Bracknell to its San Jose office for a couple of years.
Marvellous timing, I know.

Salary negotiations are beginning in earnest. Most of the Californian job
sites I can find don't mention salaries these days (surprise, surprise).
What does a competent C++ developer earn in Silicon Valley these days?

Thanks and regards,

Markus
