Exchange Server v5.5 on Windows 2000 Server SP2

2001-09-27 Thread Richardson, Brian

Hi, I thought that I would post this question to see if anybody here has had
anything similar happen to them. One of my Win2k Server SP1 machines running
Exchange 5.5 crapped out on me after changing the driver for the autoloader
unit. It would blue screen on boot and I had no current recovery disks for
it. I had to re-install the OS and re-apply the service packs. When I did
this I went straight to SP2 instead of SP1 which was loaded previously.
Exchange would not accept any client connections, but it would work from the
server itself. To make an extremely long story short, it is a problem with
tcp/ip not binding to RPC for the information stores. I switched over to
named pipes and made a login script to change all of the clients registry
entry for RPC binding order so it would work on the LAN subnet. The
disadvantages to this is that named pipes is slower than tcp/ip and it is
non-routable. I have completely uninstalled Exchange and hunted down all
remaining registry entries for it, removed manually, and re-installed and
patched back to SP4 with the same problem. I logged a call with Microsoft
support and after spending over 50 hours on the phone with countless
technicians and having conference calls with the heads of their support
departments, had no resolution. Their support is the best that I have ever
seen, might I add. They sincerely want to help, and worked with me after
their shifts even. Back to the problem, the only thing left to try is
removing tcp/ip and re-installing it. Since this is a domain controller, I
hesitate to do this since I would have to remove DHCP, DNS, WINS, etc as
well and then set them back up. There is of course the risk that goes along
with this since it's sort of a hack not supported by Microsoft. I'm not
looking for anybody to spend much time thinking about this problem, just
wondering if it has happened to anybody else since Microsoft had no prior
log of anything like it.

RE: Ontrack's PowerDesk 4

If you don't want your users running regedit, I would suggest setting up a
policy on your server to disallow it.

Subject: OT: Ontrack's PowerDesk 4

ALL:
I got into a discussion with my overall boss this morning about
PowerDesk 4. He recently ordered us to install it on all machines that we
service and to remove WinZip. I opened the "My PowerDesk" shortcut this
morning and found out that the default has a shortcut for RegEdit on it's
launchbar. I brought that to my bosses attention and stated that I thought
that we need to try something else. By putting a shortcut there for
RegEdit, I feel that it opens our systems up for the user to go playing
around in the registry and do some heavy damage. The program is profile
aware, so deleting the icon under one user will not remove it from another.
While, I realize that users can run RegEdit from the run command, my point
was that a lot of our users usually do not run a program from the command
line and that RegEdit does not have an icon shortcut for it on the menus by
default. Has anyone had any problems with PowerDesk 4 or know of security
risks associated with it? Thanks,

RE: Power User Rights

I think that you just need to add the domain account for the user to his
local power users group as well as his local system account.

Have you implemented Group Policy? Remember that domain policy ALWAYS
overrides local settings or local policy. Sound like you just need to go
through the GPO and I thought I remember there being a setting for Power
Users. Can't recall off the top of my head, as I haven't memorized it or
anything.

Subject:Power User Rights

I need to give some laptop users in my organization Power User
privileges on their PC's so that they are able to install applications
and such. I added them to the Power User group locally, but as soon as
they login to the domain, they lose all of their privileges. Anyone
have any ideas what I have to do on the server to give them this right
without giving them full administrative privileges? I am having trouble
figuring out where to give them rights - in group membership, group
policy, file system?

Thanks in advance,

~Eric

RE: satellite connection

2001-09-26 Thread Richardson, Brian

DirecTV has a satellite internet service called DirecPC
(http://www.direcpc.com). Satellite internet has been around for years but
hasn't been very popular because of latency problems related to weather and
the fact that you usually have to use a modem but sometimes other, somewhat
faster connection for your upstream. Some sites that might be of interest to
you are:
