Open and close multiple files on NFS share

2010-05-11 Thread Travis Robinson
Hello,

We are testing some new antivirus software and need to open and close multiple
files. The software is configured to scan on read/write access, but we've only
seen 20 reads/writes in the last day.

Does anyone know of a program I can use to connect to the share, open a file
and then close it so we can ensure we're getting the correct scanning? We'd
like to do more than a couple people randomly opening them. I'd like to be able
to limit it to text and image files as we have some pearl and bash scripts as
well.

Thanks

Travis

RE: What is Vmware thinking?

2009-04-27 Thread Travis Robinson
It does seem that VMware is incorporating a lot of these things with releases.
I do know there are a couple svmotion plugins for the GUI. It definitely makes
it a lot nicer. We've used this one from Andrew Kutz for a good 6 or 7 months
and have had no issues with it.

Yeah.. snaphunter or even better powershell works a treat!. Svmotion would have
been cool in the gui but you can do that with powershell as well!

There was a mandated separation of companies between VMware and EMC
during the merger. Non-compete, etc. I believe this was in one of
the announcements at the time.

Well, vKernals looks interesting, I shall have to go look at it.
I currently use a PowerShell script to find snapshots. If you are not
experimenting with PowerShell and you are managing ESX/Virtual Center,
you are seriously missing out.

Connect-VIServer -server  -protocol https;
$snap = Get-VM | Get-Snapshot
$snap | select VM, Created, Name, Description

RE: Prevent Screen Saver in PowerPoint

2009-01-14 Thread Travis Robinson
We had the same situation, so I created a new OU and put a 1 hour screen saver
lock out using GPOs. This seems long enough and I can move people in and out as
needed.

I'm leaning in that direction, but it would be easier on my users if they could
use their regular accounts.

Windows Media Player disables the screen saver when playing DVDs so that it
doesn't pop up in the middle of a movie. So it seems to me that a mechanism
exists to do this. It's just a matter of getting PowerPoint to behave the same
way...

I created a special user account for using PP that has no screensaver
timeout or lock. It's also locked down from using network resources since
the computer could be left and an untrusted person could then sit down at
it.

An Earth-shattering suggestion. Truly.

;-)

Mea culpa for not specifying that users can't change their screen saver
settings because Group Policy locks that down per requirements from the
Auditor General's office.

Temporarily change your screen saver time delay via the control panel.

Shook

Does anyone have a trick for preventing the screen saver from kicking in
during a PowerPoint presentation? It seems like this should be possible in
theory, since other apps (Media Player comes to mind) can block the screen
saver...

OT: Selling servers

2008-12-31 Thread Travis Robinson
Hello,

We are looking at migrating to an all blade environment and have some 1yr old
Dell 1950s with Gold support.

Has anyone sold off old servers that are still under warranty? Any
recommendations on how to do it; eBay or reseller?

Any suggestions are appreciated

Thanks and Happy New Year

RE: Best duplicate-filefinder?

If you want just a regular program, TreeSize Pro works well.
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/. They have a full demo and the price is
very reasonable.

I need a duplicate-file-finder for pruning some backups.
Recommendations sought ... freeware required as I will use it on client
systems as well as on my own.

TIA

Thanks to all that offered their support. I'll contact you off line.

Hello,

I have a strange request for all. I've recently misplaced my only copy of
Citrix Metaframe XP Feature Release 3 disk, and I'm in a bit of a hurry to
install two new servers. I've contacted all my friends and no one has this
version. I've called Citrix and they don't have the downloads anymore because
it is end of life. We plan on phasing out Citrix within a year and need it for
a final application until it can get re-written. I've called our VAR and they
have FR1, but that will not work on 2003 server. I'm calling another VAR
tomorrow, but I was hoping that someone may have a copy that I can borrow or
steal. We have plenty of licenses, just no media.

If anyone would be willing to make this available if you still have it, I would
appreciate it greatly.

I'm hitting up all three lists in desperation.

Thanks

Travis

RE: Annoying Vista Logon

2008-01-22 Thread Travis Robinson
I think the reason for the change is in a domain you can now do fast
user switching like the XP Home versions. I've tested logging in and
everything seems fine, but I haven't played with it enough to determine
the toll it takes. As for changing it back, here is a link. I haven't
read it all, so I hope it's correct.

Subject: Annoying Vista Logon

When a Vista machine is a member of a domain the logon screen gives you
the opportunity to log on as the last person that logged on. If you
want to log on as a different user you have to click on "Switch User"
which bring up another screen on which you have to click "Other User"
before you can log on. Is there a way to revert the logon screen back
to the old XP style screen where you don't have to bring up two
additional screens to log on? Microsoft really went out of their way to
make logging on more complicated with Vista!
