RE: Anyone using DPM?

2011-10-12 Thread Joseph Heaton
In what ways was it confusing to setup? I've been using CommVault and
Netbackup for the last couple of years... how is DPM different/same to
these products?

>>> Jesse Rink  10/11/2011 6:21 PM >>>

I’ve recently used it at a customer for about 2 months now. I find
the product to be really good in some areas, but severely lacking
(mainly documentation, and getting help troubleshooting specific
problems) in other areas. For me, it was very confusing to
setup/configure and really understand what is going on and how backups
work – coming from 10+ years using Backup Exec or other products. I’m
still on the fence whether I like DPM or not.

Any experiences are welcome. Do you like it? Hate it? How big is

RE: Anyone using DPM?

2011-10-06 Thread Tobie Fysh
Not sure about comparisons, but migrated us from Backup Exec to DPM back in
2007 and haven't looked back.
Our estate looks as follows:
HQ - Main datacentre with DPM secondary server with tape backup (D2D2T)
Depot site - Primary DPM server with NetApp SAN for storage (D2D)
Sites are connected by 100Mbs leased line.
Currently backing up 25 servers to varying levels
The live backups are streamed from the live servers at the HQ to the DPM server
at the Depot site, with throttling this doesn't have any impact on live
services (including VoIP).
The tape backups are then performed at the HQ on the secondary server from the
primary backup server (which is offsite, at the depot). With this we keep the
tape backups onsite as the primary backups are offsite (awaiting someone to
shoot this down in flames).
As we are a pure MSFT estate it runs like a charm, SQL, Exchange, Lync, File
Servers. All been backed up and successful test and real restores performed.
Also we successfully performed a full DR test by taking just the DPM server and
the offsite DC and then managing to restore all services.
I've migrated us from DPM 2007 to DPM 2010 which was the same as the Exchange
upgrades (new hardware and swing over), all very painless.
All this being said - YMMV.

Tobie

RE: Anyone using DPM?

2011-10-06 Thread Paul Hutchings
I'm not using DPM, but my understanding is that it's entirely
Microsoft-centric, which is a good thing if you're a Microsoft shop, obviously
not so good if you do or plan on having other platforms to backup and support.
I'm also pretty sure that it doesn't support dedupe and that support for aux
copying data off to tape isn't as polished as things like Commvault.
Whether those are are issues of course depends on your environment and
requirements.
