We have Iron Mountain do it.  That way the destruction is legally
documented...

We save them up for our HR dept. Once a quarter new hires go thru safety
training. They burn the tapes minus the cases and have people use the
fire extinguishers for testing. They must put something else in the fire
because the tapes vaporize in seconds.

If you have a shredding service, they will often do it for you at a small
cost.

 

Or you could get an electromagnet and wipe the tape them smash it with a
hammer.
