Re: Drobo experiences

2011-04-08 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
I am seriously hating Drobo's right about now. Dealing with them en masse,
I can assuredly say that they are quite craptastic. Daily issues with these
things. Management tools are a joke. Typical resolution is to
power-cycle... And you do this EXACTLY the same way you fix a cable modem
problem. Yep, you pull the power-cord, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back
it.

Fscking amateur.

We've had success with a couple models from Synology. Easy AD

I used ReadyNAS some years back -- just before NetGear bought them.

They were decent boxes, and came in desktop and rackmount configurations.
The biggest issue is always AD integration. At the time, it wasn't all that
hot.

The QNap devices support iSCSI as well as some other protocols that make
them seem much more useful in the long run.

+1 for Buffalo.
I loathe our NAS device. I have only some netadmin related stuff on it, for
backup purposes. It is also slow, and doesn't speak NTFS.
I will also reiterate a comment I've made previously. Back when I was
looking for cost effective SAN equipment, Buffalo was coming out with some
SAN capable equipment. My CDW rep got a Buffalo sales rep on the line, and
I asked about getting a demo unit. The Buffalo rep's suggestion was that I
order via CDW and avail myself of their return policies, while the CDW rep
was on the line! That kind of behavior speaks volumes about a company, and
I know for certain that the Buffalo rep is still employed, as my CDW rep
still has to deal with him regularly.

+1 on the buffalo comment.

I have yet to try a QNap, but they do look impressive from a distance.

Does anyone have any insight into similar issues, or (hopefully) anything to

Drobo experiences

2011-04-04 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
Hi everyone,

Directly supporting Drobo devices is new to me - but in the past two weeks I
have come to the conclusion that these things are not worth the support
headaches. Particularly it seems, when dealing with DroboShare attached
equipment. I'm repeatedly seeing delays, timeouts, and outright
connectivity drops.

Does anyone have any insight into similar issues, or (hopefully) anything to
the contrary? Thanks!
