I love roaming profiles. Sure beats backing up workstations.

Of course, I also drop the hammer pretty heavily on people who abuse things.

RE: Endpoint backups

2013-04-17 Thread Richard McClary
Those 2 locations are supposed (an infamous "S-word"!) to be re-mapped to that
centralized location. HOWEVER, some of our programmers, being programmers,
tend to dig into that big local drive, find they can create a directory, and
put all their development code there. Then when the workstation goes bye-bye
(well, they tend to not do that more than once!)...

RE: Endpoint backups

2013-04-17 Thread Kennedy, Jim
So the goal is to protect the orgs docs...not backup desktops. Backup desktops
is a method for getting to your goal.

Most of us would argue that redirect my docs to a server and back that up is a
better way to get to that goal. Tell them anything on their desktop is subject
to instantaneous loss, or redirect their desktop to the server also.

I prefer to redirect my docs and put some controls on space and file type on
that share and let them save their music and funny videos to the desktop. The
users get that and like the compromise.

We don't have a centralized system. For those users that want to backup, they
can use Windows Backup, to an external drive. Not good if the building gets

Re: Endpoint backups

2013-04-17 Thread James Rankin
Never bothered really...Folder Redirection for user folders onto the
network seems to remove the need.

However laptop endpoints where the user has to save data locally used to be
a pestOffline Files was always a pain to get working so I can see why
some people actually backed these up. But seeing as we now have loads of
apps (many which have been discussed recently on this list) that can do
cloud- or enterprise-based syncing from a local folder, I don't see much
need at all for backing up endpoints.

Maybe in extreme situations where there was some kind of locally-based data
engine (I've seen these sorts of things used by people who need to run apps
to generate quotes for people whilst visiting their homes and such), but
I'd be trying to get around that sort of thing by provide some kind of
synchronized application access.

Cheers,

JR
