I used to work at an University research facility.  They commonly allowed
the employees to "work from home" and never seemed to have any basis or
means to check that they actually did do any work.  I know for a fact
several actually put in more hours from home than at the office, others well
I best not say.  My current job does not encourage or even want employees to
work more than their assigned hours.  Only a few are allowed the means to
work off site.  I very refreshing change from having to put in 60 to 80
hours a week and only get paid for 40.

Just for the record in the US (I have no clue if this is true elsewhere)
employees are allowed Maternity leave without regard to the sex of the
individual taking the leave.  They only have to prove they have a recent new
born in the house and that they will be a primary care giver.  I know I took
some after my daughter was born to assist my wife in taking care of her.
They took vacation hours or sick hours but there was never a question of
allowing it.  A few years later one of my former coworkers had a kid and
both her and husband took time off under the law.  I think he did more
hunting than taking care of the baby but... (at least he had some new
hunting stories to tell when he got back).
