Wow, I guess it’s true …

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

The expressed skepticism *could* prompt you to test a restore *BEFORE* it
possibly proves to be a critical failure to VERIFY that the restore
function works as you expect.

I have in the past seen folks lose their jobs from inability to perform a
restore within claimed timeframes for failure to test prior to critical
needs, where exceeding the planned and communicated restore window had a
major negative impact on business operations.

What exactly is your reason for participating in this listserv ?

Dude.

Many of the "comments" in this list are often:

1) Suggestions that will get your ass out of a sling in the future

2) Ideas you can tuck away for future implementation

3) Damn good best practices

4) An indication that your initial post was rather incomplete and
left us with no evidence you had done your due diligence and thus left
us with no choice but to assume you were as clueless about
implementation as you were to posting to mailing lists.

Now maybe _YOU_ get your panties in a wad when somebody points out an
issue that you might be able to rectify PRIOR to it becoming a problem.
The rest of us have thicker skin and recognize the value therein.

So... chill.

2010-11-23 Thread Michael B. Smith
MongoDB is web-scale.

It's as fast as backing up your transactions to /dev/null.

Anytime I hear that a backup application is "twice as fast" - I want to know

2010-11-23 Thread Matthew Bullock
I'd love to test it but the LTO loader broke. Can't even back up at this point
and can't get funding to replace it

All the 12.5 restores worked great though FWIW.

We just switched from BEX 12 to Veeam 5 for backups. Its not going as well
as planned, but the config and setup is nice. Im not getting the kind of
throughput I would expect, but veeam is working with me to determine why its
failing over to network mode.

Just for a benchmark.

I haven't used it for anything more then backing up some VM's, but get about
50mb/s going across the local lan .

Its good stuff, but it is also quite expensive. If you need to be able to
monitor server sprawl (if that is a problem for you) then I would recommend
it.

Needless to say, it is a luxury, not a requirement. In my little ideal
world, I wouldn't want to run without it. But could I? Sure thing.

2010-11-18 Thread Kramer, Jack
Some experience with vRanger – a little bit of a pain to set up, amazing when
it works; however, SAN or NAS issues cripple it. Also has problems with very
large (1TB+) VMs – the ESX server has a tendency to get stuck forever at taking
the snapshot of the VM and you'll lose some performance not to mention a failed
backup or twelve. File level restore of Windows guests is an amazing feature
though.

RE: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-15 Thread John Aldrich
The plan was to have VEEAM running to keep two physical machines in sync
running the same VMs on both (or at least having a "hot backup" of the other
server on another physical machine) and to use something like Backup Exec to
back up the VMs.

No, I think the idea was that it would keep two boxes synchronous, so that if
the VM failed on one, I could bring the same, exact VM up on another machine
easily.

Hijack - Veeam - was RE: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-15 Thread Raper, Jonathan - Eagle
Veeam is good for monitoring and mapping your vmware environment. It (Veeam
reporter, at least) is licensed per processor (not per core) if you're over 6
procs.

Its good stuff, but it is also quite expensive. If you need to be able to
monitor server sprawl (if that is a problem for you) then I would recommend it.

Needless to say, it is a luxury, not a requirement. In my little ideal world, I
wouldn't want to run without it. But could I? Sure thing.

Re: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-15 Thread Cameron
I've played with VEEAM fairly recently for my ESXi box. Seemed to work ok
and the speed on this version was not bad at all. I remember trying it
before and the version then had REALLY bad performance.

Re: Backup Exec 2010

2010-02-23 Thread Roger Wright
I upgraded last week. It went smoothly enough, just like going from
11 to 12. All new agents so be prepared for reboots. Haven't done
anything with the dedupe inclusion.

We're just backing up our Exchange infostore, the daily vRanger
backups, and a couple other servers via the agents.

Yes. It's a Symantec product.

We have BE 12.5 and I don't think there has ever been a stage where it has just
